Amateur astronomer discovers Jupiter collision
21/07/2009
An amateur astronomer from the small village of Murrumbateman, north of Canberra, has made a rare discovery that has NASA scientists excited.
Computer programmer Anthony Wesley captured images showing a massive comet or asteroid had collided with the planet Jupiter.
Mr Wesley made the discovery in the early hours of yesterday morning using a telescope in his backyard.
He says he immediately realised its significance.
"By two o'clock I'd come back up to the house and was sending alerts to all the people I could think of that should be looking at this and especially the professional astronomers with specialised instrument for measuring this," he said.
"The sooner they could see this the more interesting and more useful science they can get from it."
His discovery has been confirmed by NASA and has caught the attention of astronomers around the world.
Mr Wesley says it is only the second time such a discovery has been made.
"There was pretty much widespread excitement as soon as everybody realised that another one of these impact has happened," he said.
"It's a dream really for anyone who takes photographs of the planets and photographs of Jupiter to take a photograph of this type, really it's a dream come true for me."

New Images Indicate Object Hits Jupiter
July 21st, 2009

(PhysOrg.com) -- Scientists have found evidence that another object has bombarded Jupiter, exactly 15 years after the first impacts by the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.
Following up on a tip by an amateur astronomer, Anthony Wesley of Australia, that a new dark "scar" had suddenly appeared on Jupiter, this morning between 3 and 9 a.m. PDT (6 a.m. and noon EDT) scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, gathered evidence indicating an impact.
New infrared images show the likely impact point was near the south polar region, with a visibly dark "scar" and bright upwelling particles in the upper atmosphere detected in near-infrared wavelengths, and a warming of the upper troposphere with possible extra emission from ammonia gas detected at mid-infrared wavelengths.
"We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," said Glenn Orton, a scientist at JPL.
Orton and his team of astronomers kicked into gear early in the morning and haven't stopped tracking the planet. They are downloading data now and are working to get additional observing time on this and other telescopes.
This image was taken at 1.65 microns, a wavelength sensitive to sunlight reflected from high in Jupiter's atmosphere, and it shows both the bright center of the scar (bottom left) and the debris to its northwest (upper left).
"It could be the impact of a comet, but we don't know for sure yet," said Orton. "It's been a whirlwind of a day, and this on the anniversary of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Apollo anniversaries is amazing."
Shoemaker-Levy 9 was a comet that had been seen to break into many pieces before the pieces hit Jupiter in 1994.
Leigh Fletcher, a NASA postdoctoral fellow at JPL who worked with Orton during these latest observations said, "Given the rarity of these events, it's extremely exciting to be involved in these observations. These are the most exciting observations I've seen in my five years of observing the outer planets!"
The observations were made possible in large measure by the extraordinary efforts of the Infrared Telescope Facility staff, including telescope operator William Golisch, who adroitly moved three instruments in and out of the field during the short time the scar was visible on the planet, providing the wide wavelength coverage.

Apparentl because of jupiters size she kinda attracts all the stray bodies hurtlin in long orbits around the sun - and saves the earth being being bombarded.

Lucifer project anyone?
No. I think it's the Gnome-project.
The gnomes are trying to make it a second earth because this one has gotten boring.

Mysterious Object Rips Through One of Saturn's Rings (http://www.popsci.com.au/military-aviation-amp-space/article/2009-08/mysterious-object-rips-through-saturn-ring)
Saturn's approaching equinox reveals a possible ring collision with a small object

http://www.popsci.com.au/files/imagecache/article_image_large/files/articles/saturn_rings_1.jpgSaturn Gets Served: A mysterious object passing through Saturn's "Ring F" NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
An unknown object appears to have punched through one of Saturn's rings and left a calling card in the form of trailing debris. NASA's Cassini spacecraft snapped the image on June 11, 2009 during its ongoing tour of Saturn and its moons. Phil Plait of Discover's Bad Astronomy (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2009/08/09/like-the-fist-of-an-angry-god/) likens the event to the "fist of an angry god" messing up Saturn's F ring. He also raises the question of whether mystery object X has a truly bizarre orbit around the planet which takes it up and down through the rings, or whether it's a wayward wanderer that was pulled in on collision course due to one of Saturn's moons (http://www.popsci.com/military-aviation-amp-space/article/2009-06/new-evidence-saturns-moon-has-liquid-water).
Such a photo opportunity only became possible because of tomorrow's approaching Saturn equinox, when the planet turns edge-on toward the sun and effectively makes its rings vanish from Earth's view in the absence of reflected sunlight, as SPACE.com (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/090810-mm-saturn-rings-edge-on.html) explains. The event only takes place every 15 years.
A lower sun angle compared to the ring plane means that out-of-plane structures currently cast long shadows across the rings. Cassini has taken advantage of this to spot the Saturn system intruder and examine vertical structures within the planet rings.

The Cassini probe's handlers should be pleased that their charge has continued to earn its keep, after several mission extensions over its 11-year tour. If the spacecraft can
keep delivering (http://www.popsci.com/military-aviation-space/article/2008-03/possible-ocean-beneath-titans-crust) images like this, we're all for a proposed mission extension through 2017.

REally!!!, I'm pleased that you are 100% convinced that it IS a hoax....... and because some guy in the Sun said so............
If it's in the Sun, then it must be true!!1
Come on mate, my dad worked as a Sun Press man for 30 odd years.... I KNOW what goes on at the Sun news desk first hand........
The ONLY way we will know if it is a hoax is if it DOESN'T happen!!!!!!!
Not because some anonymous poster say's it is.....
That is a really blanket, closed minded, controller devised, cul-de-sac statement....
I'm sorry if this comes across as rude, sarcastic and arsey... and it is not in my nature to do so at the best of times... but re-read what you just posted...
Peace mate and let's ALL hope that this doesn't happen, otherwise WTF are we doing wasting a beautiful day on here........
If you knew it was possibly your last, what would you be doing now???
And on that note I am going out to the hills to breathe the air and smell the Earth with my 6 children....
Have you seen this.....

I believe mankind's destiny is to necessarily migrate from this planet of origin if our species is to survive the planet's eventual and inevitable demise. The truth is, we do not have a comfortable time span of unfettered evolution in which to advance ourselves, technologically and philosophically, spiritually and morally, in order to achieve the ability for space migration...and we never have had. At any moment, a threat to our continued existence could appear from a number of various avenues, celestial and temporeal; that is to say, from space and here on earth.
Along with cometary impacts and solar influences, here on earth we have natural catastrophes and ourselves to be wary of. So far, as a species, we have achieved a modicum of success of managing to remain in existence, but are now prevailing through the most dangerous times of any evolving intelligence as it acquires technological prowess that is not fully balanced by an altruistic philosophy demonstrated to all members of its species from other members of its species.
We are at a technological level whereby we are able to decimate ourselves, or particular races of our species in order that one racial-type may supercede all others. However, our current technological level does not enable us to safeguard ourselves from terrestrial effects such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes and other extreme weather; nor does it enable us to survive celestial impacts, because we cannot migrate off this planet to safety...spaceflight is nowhere near as routine as that depicted in the movie '2001: A Space Oddessy'. It is our fate that our only space vehicle of continued relative safety is the very planet we call home.
Give or take a few cosmological degrees, our planet's orbital position remains relatively fixed in the solar system, but that of the solar system and galaxy does not. It is probable that we are entering a phase of greater galactic debris and dust in which the fate of our species is threatend by an increase in celestial influences. Equally, the optimum solar distance the earth has enjoyed for many millenia, is heating up as the output of solar radiation attests. That narrow temperate band in which our planet has remained for billions of years, and in which life has been able to form and evolve, is both warming and shifting. It may be that solar energy fluctuations from optimum to higher through to lower have adverse effects upon the environment of the planet, and thereby, on its life forms?
What we consider as global warming and effective climate change may simply be fluctuations in solar output, and that our own industrial activity (although not being 'causal') is a detrimental addition to the effects? Be that as it may, we still remain in technological infancy, and are not yet able to safeguard our species (or that of any other) from potential extinction threats...we still have a long way to go.
Regardless of whatever may threaten the existence of a intelligent species, of whatever planet, its true ability to remain in existence depends not only on the continuation and growth of its technological prowess, but also that its prowess is balanced by a ethical (not utilitarian) and altruistic philosophy...without which, it is doomed to extinction.

So, it's the 23rd and we're all stll here.
That was one of many pages I found on the net saying it was a hoax, it was the first (not the most accurate one) that I posted.
What annoys me most is the fact that there are so many two brainedcelled morons out there spreading idiotic rumours which only serve the purpose of scaring everyone. What we want and need is constructive revealing information, not garbage!

as i said before this has more to it then meets the eye... not some thing to dismiss.
there is "something" out there that is doing damage.
and if you take into consideration the underground bases... you know the ones i am talking about.... 2012... solar winds... meteors... planet x... haarp... and more.

Without evidence, this is all just hearsay.
It's because of rumours, of "this guy said this happened", or "that guy said that is down there", that people are misled and the unawakened of us tend to dismiss those of us who 'understand more' as conspiracy lunatics.
Look outside of the box ...
