Dining With Hitler In Asia: Hitler-themed Bars & Restaurants
http://www.who-sucks.com/people/dining-with-hitler-in-asia-hitler-themed-bars-restaurants

Adolf Hitler? In most western countries he is viewed as history’s most evil man, and almost all are aware of the horrific genocide he was responsible for, with many having had family fight and/or die in the war against Nazi Germany.

However, in Asia, Hitler is a far more distant figure. This distance might be an explanation for the bizarre case of Hitler restaurants and bars that can be found throughout Asia.

Here are some photos of these strange Hitler-themed establishments:

In 2006, the restaurant Hitler’s Cross opened in Mumbai, India:
From the Associated Press:

When Hitler’s Cross restaurant opened in a Mumbai suburb Sunday, local politicians and movie industry types were on hand to celebrate beneath the posters of the Nazi leader and swastikas.

“It’s really made people very upset that a person responsible for the massacre of six million Jews can be glorified,” Elijah Jacob, one of the Jewish community’s leaders, said on Wednesday.

But owner Puneet Sablok has refused to back down. Apart from Mumbai’s 4,500 Jews, there has been little controversy in India, where Holocaust awareness is limited, Adolf Hitler is regarded as just another historical figure and swastikas are an ancient Hindu symbol, displayed all over to bring luck. There are just 5,500 Jews in all of India.

Soon after the article was published the restaurant’s owner backed down and changed the name of the restaurant.

This Hitler Bar, which was located in Busan, South Korea, caused a lot of anger in the foreign community.

The website Pusanweb interviewed the owner of the bar, who said the following:

I wanted to design a beer bar with something shocking that would attract the young generation. Beer got me thinking about Germany (the home of beer) which made me think of Hitler.
[…]
….he is no different than Alexander the Great or Gengis Khan. They were all conquerors who killed many people and they are all ‘big men’ in the sense of their notoriety living on long after they died.

The owner eventually changed the name of his bar to Ditler’ and then to ‘Ceasar’.

Another Hitler Bar in Busan, South Korea (From the The Gates of the Minjok, an article by Michael Hurt about the nazi roots of modern Korean national identity) :

From the same article:

The picture I should have taken was of another Hitler bar, this one way down on the coast in Sunchon, and which I ran across in 1994 – doesn’t exist because I was simply in too much shock at the time to have the foresight to take a picture. I tend to think, though, that since many trends in the big city get followed by small towns – and not the other way around – I tend to think that there were more Hitler bars peppered across the peninsula. And given that many other expats have told me stories of “their” Hitler bar from their own cities, I’m actually pretty sure of this.

What do you think of businessmen who set up Hitler-themed restaurants?

look at the link, the pics are funny. it shows teh east's view of hitler, he is seen as one of europes leaders, his hijacking of asian culture, his imperial crusades are seen as no different to british empire, bush etc. its great insight inot the real opinion of the asians. the bit about germany being the home of beer, lol another anglo legacy in england, that and bratwurst/sausages. i think ale/bitter is english though.

i'm just hearing about it for the first time, it doesn't surprise me that tbh, there are so many people in southern africa that have interest in crap, they just want to experience life, meet new people, having this place still operating in harare possibly says something i have been hearing a lot of, that the maybe the situation in zimbabwe not as bad as some people say, it certainly goes a way to dispelling myths that white and black are at each other's throats all the time, much like south africa.
i've actually been thinking of planning a trip to harare and the great zimbabwe ruins, because as bad as things may be there, i still think there is a lot of demonising going on about zimbabwe, i want to see for myself.

The Book Cafe provides an environment where performers and audience can debate, challenge and confront

Arts & culture
New website for Zim artists
HARARE – The Pamberi Trust, incorporating The Book Café and Mannenberg Jazz Club, has announced the setup of a website for Zimbabwe’s performing, literary and visual artists to offer artists of every discipline the opportunity to promote themselves and their work at no cost. Participants will be able to make use of information technology enjoyed by artists everywhere, and to offer the world contact details and information through the world wide web.
Another, broader objective is to draw together the somewhat fragmented corners of the arts and cultural industry of Zimbabwe for the benefit and survival of all stakeholders.

Harare Book Café the hub of Zimbabwe's cultural life

The terrible conditions in today's Zimbabwe only feed the desire of young artists to express themselves, but this is becoming more and more difficult for them. The Book Café is an initiative by the Pemberi Trust, which plays a central role in the cultural life of the capital, Harare. "The situation in Zimbabwe has deteriorated alarmingly and terribly within a few weeks," says the trust's Artistic Director, Paul Brickhill, one of the driving forces behind the success of the café. "Our general manager has been threatened with arrest. There are long power cuts every day. Food and water are in increasingly short supply. This weekend we will go hunting and gathering for food supplies for Book Café kitchens."

something like this in england would be cool, with a book/record/dvd/art/clothes shop on the side. a venue, on one side bar/cafe with the otherside a shop where peeps can get good books, art, music, videos, etc. the french are cool at this tuff, their cafe culture/arts/philosophy etc is spot on. a high tech bohemian, electronic hippy vibe is the way forward. or as me/my mate say, hhcg, hip hop computer geek, lol

well, the zimbabwe ruins are not that far from the south african border, and i really, really want to see them, so sometime in the next little bit i'll start at timbavati in south africa, and then head due north to great zimbabwe (if you start at timbavati and head north as the crow flies, you'll pass through great zimbabwe and eventually end up at the giza plateau).
i know it's probably not safe, but i feel the need to go there, harare i'll probably give a skip, true or not, i've heard that white foreigners are invariably fingered as spies there, the prospect of spending time in a zimbabwean jail is not one i relish.
