In my view there are two types of respect.

There is the type you have for a manager who is good to you, sends you on courses, fights with HR to get you a pay rise, is flexible with you, lets you have your annual leave when you want etc.

Then there is the type you have for someone because you fear them.

Which is best?

What are the drawbacks of each? What are the merits of each?

Do they work? Is one better than the other?

lets just hope this isnt representative of most people. only repecting someone who can do something for you or someone you fear would make this a pretty shitty place to live in. luckily i think we mostly live in a place where people generally respect all others until they give them reason to do otherwise.

respect al

I can't say I have ever respected somebody because I feared them. Respect is earned not just freely given!

The first one is fear

the second one is fear

the 3rd one is someone that you relate to, ... that is respect. someone who actually cares about you , or values you like.. or the world in a nice way..

Respect nowadays just means 'i agree wit ya' someting like that..

all words keep getting distorted, but theres nothing wrong with that as "Mr Dingaling" would say, lol.

Words just change meanings...

Respect,:D :D :D

respect happens naturally as stuff flows, it doesnt come from 'intimidation',although it seems to be bandied about and used in that way a lot these days..............

Fear is fear and respect is respect 2 very diffrent things.

If I respect someone it's because they have shown me they are a respectible person there for you will most likely go out your way to help them .

Where as if I fear someone , I might do what they say etc , but soon as the irons hot and there at there weak point you might strike if ya get me.

Some men rather the fear but id take the respect anyday.

The only way to really know if it was fear or respect you got is when you die, people usually don't turn up to a funeral for a man they feared.

fear is not respect, its fear. the two are not the same at all.
the example given of the boss..respecting someone who throws you treats like a clapping seal to keep you working? no thanks. not respect either. what happens when you dont return the favour? exactly.

both examples above are examples of bowing down to people who have power over you or power to hurt you. i respect people, not positions.

respect is a positive thing.

respect is someone doing something you wish you would in that situation.....sort of consistently!Admirable traits in people you would hope to have in yourself even if you recognise the fact that you probably wouldnt! Not to be confused with admiration though.
Its a lot more too.........hard to pin down really, you might dislike someone but respect them for things, or you might like someone but have no respect for them........
look at respect in relation to yourself, see how much respect you have for others, and what it is about those people that causes you to respect them.....then do the same with people you have very little or no respect for.....then see how much respect you have for yourself!
