No idea to be honest.
I want to learn how to meditate but have never really tried it.

A couple of books on this page should get you started:

As for the origins of meditation? I have no idea either! How long is a piece of string? :D

Why would you want to do that? Meditation is used by all brainwashing establishments as a top tool of the trade. Surely you might have wondered why this is?

Next it will be Kundalini Yoga but by that time your brain will well and truly be in their clutches, and on from there to a bit of reiki 'healing'. By this time you will be softened up for a course on ancient mysteries and then on to DIY Blavatsky lunacy.

Oh deary me, another gimpy twat spending his time spreading his conformist views across a forum because he feels threatened by that which he doesn't understand.
Why are you here on this forum anyway mate? Has your mum not finished cooking your tea yet.

I really have no idea when and how meditation started, but it has ancient origins. At some point humanity became disconnected from 'all that is', so my guess would be that meditation (a shamanic practice) began as a means of entering an altered state for long enough to reconnect to latent wisdom again.

I totally agree with you Baron, having devoted, and therefore wasted a not so great many years of seriously practising several forms of meditation and following so-called spiritual paths that turned out to be about as much use as gangrenous limbs. Sod meditation, it is simply, yet another, tool of delusion and control.

Thanks, still a mystery how it all came about then.

It's been explained. It's all a CIA plot. Meditation is a form of brainwashing. Didn't you read what the Baron posted? :D

Oh my God! How can people honestly bad-mouth meditation?! I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I AM READING!

Meditation has changed my life around! What's so bad about that?

The best thing i ever learnt was how to be still and meditate.

it releases all the conditioning ie. false beliefs we all absorb
automatically....and you become aware of all the infinite
possibilites before you.

And any doubts I had about meditation were IMMEDIATELY
wiped away when I read the Baron disapproves of it.

Great...I'm on the right track!

My God, Meditate, Baron...and you might have an original thought!

LET your mind run FREE..even for a half an hour and see what
happens????

As they say: Truth greatest's friend is time.

If what you believe is true..then what can you lose???

How did meditation come from thinking? I'm more interested in how thinking came from meditation as the former is younger.

I'm sure the knowledge came with us from monkeys but if not then we would have understood what happens to us when we concentrate and rather concentrate on a thing, concentrate on nothing and then you have a way to perpetuate concentration as much as your will power can take you.

I wouldn't be so condescending with Baron; he's a mathematician. One of the oldest forms of meditations is mathematics. Just look at any Greek to renaissance philosopher, you’ll see that 99% of the time they are also mathematicians.

I'm thinking meditation maybe one of our oldest rituals as humans. Looking back... as our ancestors were in survival mode, no doubt, once they found a safe, quiet spot, meditating and cleansing their bodies and minds of stress is all they could ask for, second only to food&water. As they evolved and began to formulate deep questions about their meaning they probably first stopped and listened for an inner voice or understanding of sorts. The first mystery schools and temples were esoteric and inside them. The inner and all knowing silence is what they craved, and what many today still crave. I also think meditation became much more popular with mankind after psychedelics were discovered.

Yep, there's nothing like having a few pipes before a meditation. Then it's interstellar overdrive time :P

I'll have a wild guess. The first known people recorded in history could of been the ancient Hindus, but I've know idea how it all came about and why they decided to form a system, teaching based on the chakras.

I guess there are two schools of thought...Those that believe we devolved from a greater species (the fall etc) and those that we evolved from a more primative species.

If the former we would have started meditating when we realised we were no longer meditating.

If the latter we would have started meditating when we stripped concentration of it's properties and simply concentrated on concentration.

Historically it's always been with us.

in the past 2 months i have been meditating daily - switching from a guided med to a theta wave med daily. I have also read Stuart Wildes infinate self and art of meditation.

recently i have been getting some crazy esp and 'what you manifest experiences.

1. had a dream about a friend i had when i was 10 and 11 and the next day (i had not heard from him since i was 11) i got a long email from him.

2. plenty of thinking about some1 and then getting a text from them.

3. feeling bad energy then seeing an argument or a fight 5 minutes later.

4. some things i wanted (manifested) seemed to appear almost immediately i.e experiences or people.

5. walking down a street and not really looking at anyones tshirt then the 1st one i look at has a TV = Lies slogan on it. Seeing loads of illuminati symbology.

I believe this is related to my med, how can i make this all grow and continue?

Where and how did it start?

It has probably always been a part of different states of being, like day dreaming and just letting the mind wander as when in taking in a wonderful view.

Focused attention on the subtler realms is considered a path to reunite with God, and Christian monks and nuns do exactly this when they contemplate and pray, aka meditate.

Nothing "occult" about meditation/contemplation of the straightforward kind IOW. More elaborate methods like TM can be harmful though and cut a person off from spiritual understanding, instead descending in awareness.

Keeping it simple seems to be the best way to let go of the chatter in the mind and relax long enough to allow true creativity of thought and understanding to flood in.

My friend has been practicing Reiki Healing.
He's Advanced to 'class 2 reiki'

I thought it was a bunch of crap at first too. But when he does his thing in front of us.

I've seen him cure headaches (migraines), swollen ankles, and any kinks or pains.

It's all about your energy field, and letting it flow between our vessels.

Eh who knows. That's my little FYI
