Girl recovering after dart surgically removed from her head

A 14-year-old Tucumcari girl is recovering at an Albuquerque hospital after being shot in the head with a Taser dart by Tucucmari Police Chief Roger Hatcher.

Now, her parents say they want the police department to review its policies for using the Taser.

The girl was hit in the head Thursday by one of two darts fired simultaneously as she was fleeing, Hatcher said.

The other dart lodged in her hip.

Hatcher said be believed he had no other option.

“There’s a lot of issues,” Hatcher said. “She committed a delinquent act. She was running from police across traffic without looking.”

Hatcher said he chased her, ordered her to stop and “then did what I had to do.”

Her mother, Stacy Akin, said her daughter underwent surgery Friday morning at University of New Mexico hospital in Albuquerque.

“One of the darts entered her skull,” said Akin, interviewed by telephone.

After a CAT scan, a hospital resident told her the dart was “in her brain a little bit, but not much,” Akin said.

She was in pediatric intensive care following the surgery, Akin said. “She seems OK, but she she’s in a lot of pain. Her head is hurting her real bad.”

Police were trying help Akin because she and her daughter had been fighting, Akin said.

Akin said while she could understand the use of a Taser on an adult, it shouldn’t be used on a child.

“She’s only 14, why?” Aikin asked.

Akin also said her daughter has epilepsy.

The girl’s father, Donny Martinez of Amarillo, said his daughter takes medication for the condition.

“I’d like to find out what happened,” Martinez said, adding, “Someone, independently should look at it” to see if excessive force was used.

Akin said she and her daughter were arguing over a cell phone.

Akin said she drove her daughter to the Tucumcari Police Department to seek help.

While in front of police headquarters, her daughter walked away, Akin said.

Hatcher said he was at another incident when he received a call that a young girl had run off.

Hatcher said he returned to department headquarters and talked to Aikin, who had a bloodied lip and scratches from a fight.

Hatcher said he found the girl at George Molinas Park.

Hatcher said he got out of his vehicle, called to her and she ran in front of his patrol car across Monroe Street without looking for traffic.

Both were in a dead run when the Taser was fired, Hatcher said.

Hatcher said if he’d been able to grab her and put her on the ground, he would have done it instead of firing the Taser.

“There was a lawful reason to do that,” said Hatcher. “I didn’t have another choice and had to get her stopped.”

Akin and her daughter were new in town, Hatcher said, and he did not know where she would go.

Hatcher said if he had not stopped her the consequences might have been worse.

Taser stun guns deliver a 50,000-volt electrical current that incapacitates a person, Hatcher said.

By the time, the darts reach a person that current has greatly decreased, he said.

Hatcher said he plans to refer the case to the Juvenile Probation Office Monday for possible charges.

So explain how, in this situation (in a world without tasers) it would have been appropriate for officers to gun this girl down....

If they are to be used at all, they should be as a last resort when police are directly at risk of injury or death.

This is the most important, but all too frequently overlooked, issue.

Tasers were NEVER sold to us as the "default" setting in terms of arrest procedures.
We were told and sold that tasers were a replacement to hand guns.
That tasers would ONLY be used in situations a hand gun would otherwise be used.
The benefits were that it was a non-lethal alternative which would also minimise the psychological impact on the police officer.

If a taser is used, then a hand gun would have been used in the exact situation.

Does this mean that a police officer would shoot a 14 year old "delinquent" with a hand gun???
I think not.

This is abusive use of a deadly weapon.

Once again, where the tazer is suppose to be used in replacement of a firearm we see that the police are prepared to use them on kids, to save them from themselves. She was running into traffic, the officer said.

We also need to see more police family members m.p.'s families and a few judges grandkids hurt by being tazered or perhaps just one celebrity's kid for new rules to be drawn up. They've killed loads of people with them and I'll bet the number of dead through being shot with a gun by police is still rising.
Or, we could focus on all tazer making factories going bust through fraud or simply exploding through electrical faults :p (with noone in) :D {I can dream}

Another atrocious example of excessive use of a taser by a psycho cop. Chief no less..... that sends a strong message to his subordinates, doesn't it? Before tasers, someone would have had to actually chase her, and subdue her. She'd have fought a little, but these guys are trained for that. She'd have been cuffed and walked back. Now, they just whip out these tasers and fire away. It's crazy.

They want people to fear the police now. You could get tasered for not producing ID on a routine check, in a quickly escalating, one thing leads to another scenario. A lot of cops have a thug mentality these days, and some are just dying for an excuse to use one of these things.

I remember a few years ago, seeing a documentary on the possible use of tasers by police. It was to be very limited, and part of training was that each officer who was assigned a taser, had to be subjected to a shot from one. It was to deter the misuse of them, and to emphasize the use only if absolutely necessary. Some of the cops were taking the hits OK, some were stunned, some peed themselves or vomited. The general consensus of the interviewed participants was "I hope I never have to use this on someone..."

What's even more insane was his reason for justification.Wouldn't tasering someone running into traffic be even more dangerous than just letting them run through, and catching them after? Well actually its not the voltage that will kill you but the current (Amps). It only takes 50 milliAmps across your heart to kill you, so tazers must run on a lower amperage than whatever you saw with a voltage of 240volts. :)

But your right, cops can't be trusted with them, actually tbh, I wouldn't trust anyone with one.
