Does anyone know if taking taurine supplements is safe? Have you tried it, I took a tablet the other day and worked out and I felt very strong. But I read they can make you irritable etc.
I also read some good stuff too, but they have banned it from energy drinks in some countries. Is it good or bad?

It's found in meat isn't it? I know cats need that and bad things happen to them if they are deficient. It's one of the reasons cats can't become vegetarian, whereas a dog would be able to without suffering ill effects.
No idea whether supplementing would be dangerous for humans, but I presume they wouldn't be able to sell the supplements if that was the case.
Hit Google and try find as much research as you can and you'll be in a better position to make a decision.

I'm not sure B6 is in nuts. In fact I think I recall nuts being quite low in a lot of vitamins. Was just pointing out the fact that just because something is in an enegy drink doesn't make it bad. I've actually been unable to find out what taurine is used for. All I was able to gather was the bull penis myth.

according to wiki its in meats, whole grain products, vegetables and nuts. but then again i don't like trusting much on wikipedia lol. and ok point taken about the energy drinks but theres a lot of unnecessary junk in fizzy drinks and i've had urine infections from drinking too many over a long period of time before so its a personal choice. not to mention aspartame is in many and that is a debatable chemical

Reminds me of a substance sometimes found in energy drinks that is also found in meat. It also a weight loss aid and is found in body building supplements. They basically seem to put anything that hint of "energy" into the drinks.
I was looking at my can of cider earlier and it says it contains sugar and sweateners. Why do you need both. There's also news articles about high fructose corn syrup containing mercury. Two poisons in one at least mercury is apparently a part of ayurvedic medicine.

Here's some info i have copy & pasted....
Taurine is a naturally occurring amino acid and is found in high concentrations in the white blood cells, skeletal muscles, central nervous system as well as the heart muscles.
What are the key benefits?
Taurine can have very positive effects on your workouts and body composition. With similar properties to creatine, Taurine can draw water into the muscle cells and act as a cell volumiser. This can help draw additional nutrients into the muscle which can aid recovery and muscle growth. Taurine has also been shown to mimic the action of insulin, forcing glucose into cells. Taurine is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and plays a major role in stabilizing the heartbeat and electrical activity of the nerves which can result in a better night's sleep and improved focus.
Additional information
Taurine is also recognized as a great supplement to help reduce muscular cramps. By regulating levels of calcium, one of the major minerals associated with cramp, Taurine can help reduce the severity of the pain.

If you consider a higher risk of a hear attack to be "safe" sure, it's safe.

I am not that knowledgeable on the subject, but I think taurine is used in the nervous system.
Well, lets go on a hypothetical tangent.
let us imagine the possibility that you can bind something to taurine the body can not remove to it that also acts as a resistor, like sodium flouride (to be honest I have no damned idea if sodium flouride is a resistor or not)
Then is gets into the nervous system and slowly degenerates signals to the nerves.
I don't know maybe that sounds like nonsense to a chemist but I think we should be wary of gifts (taurine apparently builds muscles) to the masses.

It's a synthetic chemical. You might as well drink motor oil, it'll be about as harmless.

I actuall read that it was a great supplement to take for cardiovascular health and I took it a few times before working out and it seems to make me feel stronger.
That is about all it does to be honest.

Most taurine is now synthetic...it can come from many of the places previously mentioned, but the products containing taurine generally using the synthetic version of it now. It actually can be a very beneficial supplement if you're one of the people who tends to need it. The body does produce it naturally, but as you age, you lose the ability to absorb it as readily. Those who work out heavily also deplete their bodies of it faster than it can be replaced. Those people should consider a taurine (http://www.seacoastvitamins.com/topic.php?health=taurine) supplement. It will definitely help increase energy and endurance, and can even help with mental acuity and better sleep. It will also help decrease muscle cramps in those who get them from heavy lifting.

Oh that's just GREAT. Not only is it dangerous, now it comes from a lab instead of nature.
