Amid growing tensions in the Korean peninsula, South Korea raises the alarm by claiming that the North's recent missile tests signals the communist regime's potential to hit key facilities.
Pyongyang launched seven missiles into waters off its east coast on Saturday, in what was interpreted by Seoul as a warning message to the United States as it celebrated Independence Day on July 4.
The launch, testified to by South Korean officials, has fuelled growing alarm over the communist state's latest act of defiance against UN resolutions. Pyongyang is facing serious UN and US sanctions over its May 25 nuclear test.
“Five of seven missiles North Korea fired landed within the same area in the East Sea. This means the accuracy of North Korean missiles is improving,'' a government official was quoted as saying by South Korea's Yonhap News Agency Sunday.
Meanwhile a South Korean Defense Ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the missiles were believe to have traveled about 250 miles (400 kilometers), meaning they could potentially have reached almost any point in South Korea, the Associated Press reported.
This comes amid rising tension in the Korean peninsula. Last month, the North threatened to retaliate with a "thousand-fold" military aggression should the US and its allies, including the South and Japan, continue to provoke Pyongyang.
The latest US response to the testing came Sunday, as US Vice President Joseph Biden undermined the threats, suggesting that North Korea was acting out in trying to cope with its increasing isolation.
“Look, this has almost become predictable behavior… Some of it seems like almost attention-seeking behavior," Biden told ABC television on Sunday.
