The number of swine flu cases could reach more than 100,000 per day by the end of next month, Health Secretary Andy Burnham has told the Commons.

The UK has moved past the stage of containing the swine flu outbreak and into the "treatment phase", he said.

"We have reached the next stage in management of the disease," Mr Burnham said.

"The national focus will be on treating the increasing numbers affected by swine flu. We will move to this treatment phase across the UK with immediate effect."

There are now 7,447 laboratory-confirmed cases in the UK, he said.

London and the West Midlands have already had sufficiently high numbers to move towards a policy of outbreak management, which saw people with swine flu clinically diagnosed rather than being confirmed by laboratory reports.

Mr Burnham said that last week saw a "considerable rise" in swine flu cases.

"There are now on average several hundred new cases every day," he said.

"Our efforts during the containment phase have given us precious time to learn more about the virus. We have always known it would be impossible to contain the virus indefinitely and at some point we would need to move away from containment to treatment."

He added: "We have now signed contracts to secure enough vaccine for the whole population." The first will become available next month, with 60 million doses available by the end of the year."

This is moving fast. It's quite worrying.

My wife came home from school 2 weeks ago feeling crappy with flu like symptoms and passed it on to me a couple of days later. I cant say for sure that it was swine flu because nether of us wanted to get tested. We just ate loads of fresh fruit and veg a little bit of extra vit c and got loads of sun shine, and felt better with in a week.

Now she only had a sore throat at the time, she went to the doctors that same day because of fear she had swine flu and the doctor told her that she did have the swine flu. The doctor gave her some prescriptions (I guess it must have been tamiflu) and she was better in 2 days....even though she only had a sore throat....she never got fever or headache...
This makes me think and I wonder if doctors are really telling people they have caught the swine flu when they really haven't...why...

How does anyone know what is swine flu and what isn't? I'd wager 9/10 of all reported swine flu are just bad cases of the creeping crud or the seasonal crappy flu. Real flu doesn't go away in a couple of days, it usually takes a week even if you are strong. There is way too much hysteria over this. Flu and colds are supposed to be contagious, that's how viruses spread. Just because some people at the same school or building came down with the same crappy thing doesn't mean they got swine flu. People always come down with same crappy things when they work together in confined spaces. There's nothing unusual about that.

I would rather take my chances against the pathetic flu (probably deliberately spread anyway) than take a poison (which all medicines are).

Why doesn't the country say, right everyone, get yourself enough food and drink to last between 20 - 30 July and ONLY go outside or into crowded spaces if it is an emergency. 10 days of confinement and the virus would be gone! Simples!

In the UK now you just have to 'phone your doctor/NHS, describe your "symptoms", and you will be issued a voucher for a family member/friend to collect tamiflu from a local friendly 'collection point'. Keep a look-out on ebay in a few days time.

WASHINGTON, July 2 (Reuters) - The new H1N1 influenza strain may be just a little less catching than seasonal flu, but seems a little better able to cause stomach upsets, researchers reported on Thursday.

Genetic analysis and lab experiments with the virus show it lacks a piece of genetic material that makes ordinary flu viruses so transmissible, a team of U.S. researchers found.

Researchers in the Netherlands, meanwhile, found it lives very well in the nose and their findings suggest it has the ability to stay around for a long time -- and get worse.

Both studies, published in the journal Science, show that H1N1 swine flu needs to be closely watched, said Dr. Terrence Tumpey of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"I think the take-home message is that we really need to keep a close eye on this virus," Tumpey said in a telephone interview.

Last month the World Health Organization declared a pandemic of the new swine flu. It has been confirmed in more than 77,000 people globally and has killed at least 332 people, but U.S. officials have said there are likely a million or more cases in the United States alone.

Although flu season usually ends in April in the Northern Hemisphere, the new virus is still causing widespread illness and it is actively in the mix of seasonal flu viruses now circulating during the Southern Hemisphere's winter.

Tumpey and colleagues tested samples of the new virus from a California child who recovered from a mild bout with the new flu, a Texas child who died and a Mexican woman who had severe disease.

They compared it to ordinary, seasonal H1N1 flu, testing it in ferrets, which develop flu in ways similar to humans.

The ferrets did not catch the new swine flu from one another as easily as they catch ordinary viruses, Tumpey said. Usually, if a ferret is infected with human flu, it infects all other ferrets in nearby cages. But with the new H1N1, only six out of nine animals became infected.

HOUSEHOLD SPREAD

Usually 20 percent to 30 percent of household members are infected by a single flu patient but H1N1 swine flu may have a lower transmission rate, Tumpey said.

In addition, all previous pandemic flu strains -- from 1918, 1957 and 1968 -- have had a specific genetic sequence in a gene called PB2. The new H1N1 does not have this particular mutation, Tumpey said.

He said health officials should keep an eye out for it, as the change may signal the virus is gaining the ability to spread more quickly and easily than it already does. Researchers are also watching for signs the virus has developed mutations that allow it to resist antiviral drugs -- and have found two instances so far, one in Japan and one in Denmark.

In addition, Tumpey's team found mutations that let the new H1N1 virus live in the small intestine -- something seasonal influenza cannot do. This may explain why so many swine flu patients have stomach upsets such as nausea and diarrhea, the researchers said.

In the other report, Ron Fouchier and colleagues at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam found the virus lived well in ferrets and spread very easily from one to another.

In fact, ferrets shed more virus with new H1N1 than with seasonal flu -- meaning more of it came out of their noses, Fouchier's team found.

Ferrets inoculated with the new swine flu virus were a little sicker and took a little longer to recover than ferrets infected with seasonal H1N1.

"These data suggest that the 2009A(H1N1) influenza virus has the ability to persist in the human population, potentially with more severe clinical consequences," they wrote. (Editing by Mohammad Zargham)

Drug trials are carried out in stages and take many months even years to be approved. I am aware that the swine flu anti-viral drug will be given to the most vulnerable groups first. i only saw wake up call and that was enough for me to want to do something until i got into this endless cycle chasing tails for more and more truth. we can read and see all there is to know after we have chased and defeated every last demon from the face of the earth. we need to make as many copies as we can manage with the money we have, buy some comfy walking shoes and post films in every flipping letterbox in the land and around the world. the time spent arguing about were there planes? etc really does not matter. they blew them up and that's that. they shot 3 innocent muslims in the street of london..what? you don't think they will do that to you? ..come on! they have far worse endings for us.

hand them out in every bar, every club, get the landlords to play them on the big screen. hand them out to every owner of every shop that still exists. give them to passing people in the street. on the bus, on the train. they could shut the net down any time they like and all this wealth of info will be lost forever.

Splicing genetic material from multiple flu strains together is no experiment. They would only do that if they were trying to create a new strain of flu. The experiment ocurred when they intentionally vaccinated people with this in Mexico. Now they know from statistics exactly how lethal and contagious it is.

They tried this exact same experiment when they shipped flu vaccines to Europe that had a bird flu strain spliced into it, but one of the receivers was smart/intuitive enough to test it before it was widely distributed and the plan was foiled.

I don't think anyone has realized yet what the timelines of these two incidents were. In fact, if you go back and look at the reports, both of these flus were shipped out at the same time from the same labs that got contracts for the new vaccines (Baxter and Novartis). It is impossible for that to be a coinicdence or an experiment gone wrong. It could only have been done on purpose.

I Doubt they got the experiment wrong, they weren't trying to make a love virus. If you're spliceing flu bugs with other flu bugs, the result is another flu bug. It's no accident. And how come it escapes from the lab, 72 kgs of the stuff. Did it put on lab coat, steal a card key and walk out the building?

It really does seem to be accelerating very quick. Like a train on a hill, thats had its break undone. Just look at whats afoot. The massive move in Afghanistan, the ranting threats from N Korea, political coups at the equator, States like Calif. issuing iou's, (whose GDP is supposedly equal to Russia!), States looking to furlough/layoff workers, the Nafta superhighway now again an urgent matter, legislation to censure free speech and marginalize plain good folks as terrorists, the carbon tax bill just passed, regime changes in the mideast with extreme hawks as new leaders, proposed mandatory flu jabs, printing presses running at Zimbabwe/Weimar republic-like warp speed, I'll stop here, you guys could add plenty to this list. It seems like the stage is being rapidly set for something very, very, quick. The title for this show could be "Go for Broke", meaning winner take all. The high rollers are now at the table. Researchers believe their work offers proof the 1918 flu originated in birds, and provides insights into how it attacked and multiplied in humans. On top of that, this marks the first time an infectious agent behind a historic pandemic has ever been reconstructed.

So far, the current Asian virus has infected and killed at least 65 people but has rarely spread person-to-person.

Did anyone notice this discrepancy? There are now over 7000 laboratory confirmed cases in the uk but the areas where the most cases occur are 'clinically' (ie. by symptoms alone) diagnosed.

So as no official types have been able to give us any symptoms that are particular to 'swine flu' only, it seems any cough, cold or sniffle etc. is included in the swine flu figures. They are really hyping this up especially as this strain of flu has not behaved any different from ordinary flu. I really think pushing the vaccine is their main agenda. I am undecided wether this will be for profit, microchipping or some kind of biological weapon to cull the population. Quite possibly a combination of all of them.
