Copies of a book by Scotland Yard's former anti-terrorism chief were today removed from the shelves after the Attorney General obtained a last-minute injunction preventing it from going on sale.

The ban on sales of The Terrorist Hunters by Andy Hayman was issued by a High Court judge just before midnight after a hearing conducted by telephone conference call.

It was imposed just as the book was due to go on sale, although internet bookshops were still promoting the book as a special offer today.

The hearing which led to the interim injunction was sought by Baroness Scotland QC only yesterday despite the fact that the book, extracts from which appeared in The Times last week, was given to several agencies for vetting two months ago.

Intelligence agencies, the Crown Prosecution Smith and the Cabinet Office are believed to have seen copies of the manuscript ahead of publication but it was not shown to the Metropolitan Police.

The legal reasons for seeking the injunction cannot currently be disclosed. The ban on sales has been imposed temporarily and a full High Court hearing is expected next week.

The book concentrates on Mr Hayman's years as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations at Scotland Yard, which included dealing with the July 2007 bomb attacks and his call for a public inquiry into the events leading up to Britain's first suicide bombings.

Mr Hayman is also highly critical of the way in which the Government's emergency committee, Cobra, functioned claiming it spent too much time discussing politics and not enough time on urgent operational matters.

The book also looked at the murder of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko and gave a behind the scenes glimpse of top-level political and intelligence work.

Sir Paul Stephenson, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, complained last week that he was not given a preview of the book's contents.

He told a meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) that he was reluctant to give the book more publicity.

But Sir Paul said members of the force’s watchdog may like to consider whether senior officers should be allowed to publish such books. He said: “I find it surprising as commissioner that I have no right on this occasion to have access to the book before it is published. That surprises me. It is troublesome and it does not help good conduct.”

Mr Hayman, who writes for The Times on policing matters, said he was unable to comment on the injunction for legal reasons. Random House, the publishers of the book, also declined to comment.

[Now I'm interested. I would have never known about the book if it wasn't banned, dumb powers that be. I wonder what he exposes.]

well lots of books get through. I think it's rare a book gets banned, there must be something in it, unless he just reveals pointless but senstive data.

It was reported that there was a few thousand which was released to the book stores before this was banned, so there will probably be some able to locate elsewhere on the internet in the coming weeks, most likely. I'm not to sure if they will also try to banned the book from release in other countries.

The site which I ordered mine from as now sold out. I haven't received any contact such as a cancellation. Yet! See how it goes.

Booksellers have been told to withdraw from sale The Terrorist Hunters by Britain's former head of counter-terrorism Andy Hayman after a High Court judge placed a temporary injunction order on it late last night (1st July).

Booksellers were contacted by Transworld this morning (2nd July) and asked to remove the book, but not return it. A spokeswoman for Transworld's parent Random House stated: "An order has been granted restraining the publication of the book. We are unable to comment further until the full hearing." The hearing could take place as soon as next week.

The book was briefly listed for sale on Amazon.co.uk today, but has now been removed. It is not available on Waterstones.com, or WHSmith.co.uk, though remains "in stock" at The Book Depository, Play.com, and Tesco.com. The full reasons for the injunction cannot be published for legal reasons.

Hayman was Scotland Yard assistant commissioner during the 7th July attacks, the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and the murder of the Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko. The book was part-serialised in the Times last week. Copies of the book has already been seen by the Crown Prosecution Service, the Cabinet Office, MI5 and MI6 and the Metropolitan Police Authority. :http://www.thebookseller.com/news/90285-judge-puts-hold-on-publication-of-the-terrorist-hunters.html

It currently is listed to buy from Tesco. This seems to be the only source based in the UK which hasn't been removed. Same price.

I would have thought they'd have learned from the Spycatcher book that Thatcher tried to ban, this is impossilbe, as it's still available in other countries? The only thing the Spycatcher ban did was make Peter Wright an incredibly rich man, as millions of people purchased a rather boring book because it was sold as 'the book the British Government tried to ban'. If they hadn't have done that it would have sold a small amount and almost nobody would have heard of it or Peter Wright.

It is expected to be released oversea's next month, they'll probably try and pull something else I would expect.

anything good in it then?

I've not started the book at the moment. I'll look into it soon, though.

This is probably the only subject which I have not really looked into compared to everything else related - so I need to start from the beginning to have a better understanding for the books information.
I'm still surprised that I had received it, with how quickly they was to remove the listings from each source.

This is something which I expected to happen with mine.

Do you know what the problem is related too? Have you checked into your account for the current activity? (ie. item posted, ect.)
I received a message the day after saying it was posted, this one came from Jersey. - Good luck with it.
