if we managed to create an environment where we accepted certain things are not needed - eg: 8 types of baked beans then we could weed out the unnecessary shit that goes on and save all OUR resources.

don't talk about monolpies - because that word is only a buzz word, designed to give free reign to big companies to produce and enslave us all into stuff we don't need.

I think what you're talking about is how humans originally were

It looks like we will need jobs for some time to come. It's important however to not underestimate technological progress. As Ray Kurzweil said, we tend to overestimate technological progress in the short run and underestimate it in the longer run.

Soon we will have AI bots to do all the work for us that we don't want to do ourselves.

Too bad Alan Turing died at such a young age. He was a genuine pioneer in artificial intelligence, and that was even before there existed PC's (personal computers).

You know why we have jobs becuz everybody wants a chicken on their table without having to go out and catch and kill and clean the damn things themselves. It's called eating or living from hand to mouth.

Money really is the control system, but how do we get ourselves in to rehab?
Imagine if we all just nope, no money today.

If everyone stopped going to work tomorrow and became self sufficient and reliant the world would change overnight.

Simple solution.

But no one will do it.

Or the Matrix movies. :D

The key is that real intelligence will include compassion, emotional intelligent and so on. So if machines could become super-smart very quickly, then there would be no problem. The danger is if scientists today invent half-intelligent machines, like with high IQ but totally lacking in empathy for example. Then say hello to Terminator I!!!

Well if we killed off 90% of the people then we could get by without jobs, just picking fruit off trees and a lazy bit of fishing whilst sunbathing. In the real world there are 6 billion and rising fast hungry mouths to feed so someone has to work.

I don't need a job, wish I could tell that to my pesky benefits adviser.

Jobs: Doctors, nurses, police, delivery drivers, power plant personnel, farmers, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, firemen..

Sure you can do a lot of stuff yourself but you'll never excel in everything. Thats what jobs are - a devotion to training yourself to be great at a particular aspect in life so you can help others (like the barter system.. chicken farmer trades eggs with a shoemaker for boots) except now it's all to do with money. I don't think your problem is why do we need jobs, it is why do we need money.
If you said 'fuck jobs', then everyone would be mildly crappy jack of all trades and shit wouldn't get done.
I see where you're coming from, but I think you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I've done the 1st bit and haven't worked for 18 years, haven't noticed any change except that I can get out of bed at 3 in the afternoon if I feel a bit rough.

I think there's working for a living to make fake money and feed the system, then there's doing a job you love because you love it.

Yeah a lot of jobs are worthless but it's too bad that I need money to get what I want.

Aye, but that graph assumes you believe in evolutionary theory, otherwise you could argue (creation and intelligent design slant) that the stuff and doings we have now our ancient ancestors had similar, only implimented it better.
I do agree that AI is around the corner...
