The short version?
They are representative of a sick collective consciousness within the Greater Collective Consciousness. They seek to absorb our collective consciousness within their own and make a jump in "scale".
They can only deceive, but they are very good at it.
I would suggest finding out who and what you TRUELY are. They cannot harm the REAL YOU. Let the Spirit of LOVE-FORGIVENESS-LIFE=TRUTH Within guide you. Anything that conflicts with It is ERROR.
BTW, "they" corrupted the bible you're always quoting, there's only about 10 pages in that thing that is of the Creative Spirit of Life. Maybe 12...
