Australian wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around "as high as a kite", a government official has said.

Lara Giddings, the attorney general for the island state of Tasmania, said the kangaroo-like marsupials were getting into poppy fields grown for medicine.

She was reporting to a parliamentary hearing on security for poppy crops.

Australia supplies about 50% of the world's legally-grown opium used to make morphine and other painkillers.

We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles. Then they crash
Lara Giddings, government official

"The one interesting bit that I found recently in one of my briefs on the poppy industry was that we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles," Lara Giddings told the hearing.

"Then they crash," she added. "We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high."

Rick Rockliff, a spokesman for poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids, said the wallaby incursions were not very common, but other animals had also been spotted in the poppy fields acting unusually.

"There have been many stories about sheep that have eaten some of the poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles," he added.

Retired Tasmanian poppy farmer Lyndley Chopping also said he had seen strange behaviour from wallabies in his fields.

"They would just come and eat some poppies and they would go away," he told ABC News.

"They'd come back again and they would do their circle work in the paddock."

Some people believe the mysterious circles that appear in fields in a number of countries are created by aliens. Others put them down to a human hoax.

That is too funny. They can't seriously believe that??? How could you make such perfect patterns and circles being an off yer head wallaby leaping around and then crashing out?

It's too much but I absolutely love it:)

I think something landed there and the authorities are blaming it on the wallies.

Some people will believe anything the media tells em.

But I'm just speculating, it could be anything.:D

All of these were caused by stoned wallabies. Fascinating. I think when wallabies are high the Plebeians or Andromedans are able to interface with them and direct their actions to send messages to Earth.

crop circle have always fascinated me.

What? Who? How? Why? When? Some of these things appear in small timescales in area's that are not particularly remote yet no-one has seen one being made.

Some of the designs are far too large and complex to be executed by a few people with a bit of wood and a rope ( as doug and Dave would have you believe).

If reports are right, most circles considered "genuine" see some sort of mutation in the stalks of the crops they are created in - if I remember rightly it was put down to high temps or microwaves or something ( someone here will know)

Almost since I became aware of them I thought that one of the satellites that the US or USSR put up in the era of "star wars" was the culprit. Bored Army guys or someone at NASA testing the systems callibrations with a satellite based laser CAD type thing.

Someone, somewhere knows what they are.

And that someone probably gets a right buzz when a really complex one comes off. It was probably a new guy who did the Richard and Judy one tho....

Wallabies...sure, if the news article ended like this.

"We were definitely stoned when we did this", said a wallaby as it boarded its craft to return to its home planet.

Honestly, this has to be the single most ridiculous whitewash I've ever seen. TPTB are getting desperate, and are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

You guys are silly :p.

They aren't saying all crop circles are made by wallabies. Just some. Or most.

No, but seriously. This is more a story about wallabies getting high for our amusement. The crop circle bit is a joke... because they're doing circles and passing out.

:D I understand that some people don't like the idea of animals getting high, but if you think about it, mankind has already stumbled upon all kinds of psychedelics by eating them and suffering the consequence. All animals gotta learn these lessons.

The coolest theory is that psychoactive drugs are made for conscious life forms, including animals, to digest and expand their consciousness, promoting things in the human being like language and artistic habits.

That's true. If the result of wallabies getting high is that they discover and master geometry, imagine what happens if we let dolphins get high? Or squirrels?

The human race: busy uplifting the animal kingdom through psychoactives. ;)
