Anyone who plays any rpg computer games or reads fantasy books shall be familiar with what "mana" is. I found out yesterday what mana actually means, and it's amazing.
The word "Mana" comes from the old testament of The Bible from a sentence (although I can't recite it perfectly) along the lines of "The followers of God go out into the morning mists to eat the mana from heaven" then further on it explains mana as being the mushroom with which they speak to God. Psilosybin mushrooms! No wonder they were speaking to God!
So, no wonder if you're "out of mana" you can't cast any more spells!! You need to drink more potions to get more mana!
Brilliant!

it's written "manna" (gr: μάννα, heb: man) and it's not a mushroom.
however, it could be the case that mushrooms contain the substance or substances of the said type of food that fell from the sky as mentioned in the bible.
for example, the word for mushroom in greek is "manitari" (μανιτάρι).
this comes from the word "amanitis" (αμανίτης = amanita (muscaria)), also called "amanitarion" (αμανιτάριον), which became "manitarion" (μανιτάριον) and eventually "manitari" (μανιτάρι).

Manna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Attracting derision from scholars, a number of amateur ethnomycologists such as R. Gordon Wasson, John Marco Allegro and Terence McKenna, have argued that a number of characteristics of manna are similar to that of magic mushrooms, namely that such mushrooms rot rapidly, and appear as pinpricks upon the ground like hoarfrost[38][39]; this speculation is based on a comparison with the praise of Haoma in the Rigveda, and Mexican praise of teonanácatl[40], but is viewed by academics as a viewpoint beyond the fringe. Similarly viewed by scholars as implausible is the hypothesis of Immanuel Velikovsky that manna consisted of hydrocarbon rain resulting from a close encounter between Venus and Earth; this claim has been debunked by Carl Sagan, Stephen Jay Gould, and others."

Mana with a single n has become a widespread general term for magical power (not to be confused with the Greek Biblical manna which probably does mean a psychedelic of some kind). Either way you want more of it.
Mana
"A term indicating vital or magical force used widely throughout Polynesia. From his work in the South Pacific, R. H. Codrington observed: "The word is common, I believe, to the whole Pacific.... It is a power or influence, not physical, and in a way supernatural, but it shows itself in physical force, or in any kind of power or excellence which a man possesses. This Mana is not fixed in anything, and can be conveyed in almost anything; but spirits, whether disembodied souls or supernatural beings, have it and can impart it.... All Melanesian religion consists in getting this Mana for oneself, or getting it used for one's benefit."
"The techniques of arousing and acquiring mana were extensively explored by Max Freedom Long (1890-1971) in his study of the kahuna magic in Hawaii and described in his books, notably The Secret Science Behind Miracles (1948). Long established the Huna Research Organization to conduct research and spread knowledge of mana and its basis in kahuna magic."

Because so much seminal anthropology was written on Pacific religions, the word mana came to be generally used in anthropology to refer to "magical power" of this kind, even when talking about other parts of the world.

There is something about manna in the bible. I wondered what manna was for the same reason. I was told it was some kind of regular food like bread, and the story in the bible was a nomad tribe wandering the desert found manna trees or maybe it was manna raining down from the heaven. I think it was that story about how the 10 commandments where made on a mountain and all that stuff. Those stone tablets with the 10 commandments is also what the lost ark is supposed to contain, like in the first Indiana Jones movie :)

The lost ark,
The ark of the covenant,
The ark of testimony was supposed to contain an omer of manna,
Only thing is, it's not lost,
It's housed in the Kabba at Mecca,
along with the ephod, ummin and thummin.
coincidentally the next Indiana Jones film is about the Ephod.
For biblical archeology, proof of flood, explanation of sodom and gommorah etc.

Yes correct hapax, mana was one of the tools used in Maori lore system. In old times it's meaning was quite vast. If you were of royal lineage you had the mana of your blood line, or tribe. It was someone of the utmost respect not to be fucked with. To loose the mana you would normally loose your life. One of the main traditions where mana could be gained was by 'kai kiko tangata' which means the eating of a human that has mana. Kai kiko tangata was a common tradition with my people around 200 years ago and prior. You could also gain mana by gifting to others, food, woman, land. You had mana if your ancestors had mana, even if you were a nitwit/or an undesirable rude person, you still have the mana of your ancestors or your lineage. However this has been watered down in contemporary times. The collective consciousness of mana is not the same and doesn't hold nearly as much stigma as the mana of old. Though this may be the case, Maori have still hidden within the heart of some tribes of NZ, the true meaning of mana and yes it was a very powerful commodity, that those who have held onto it can still use as a resource.

My understanding of manna is that it is the white gold powder (monoatomic gold)
I have read much on it. This is just one reference

MANNA Gold Of The Gods
By HENRY KROLL
This is an intriguing manuscript, which examines ancient Egyptian historical events, ancient Hebrew history, the artifacts, and the Israelite legend of The Covenant of the Ark, life extension, levitation, and the secrets of life. The author's research is a very comprehensive integrated study of ancient history, theological legends, and their relation to paranormal phenomena. Part adventure story, part legend, and part wilderness novel; the information compiled in this work is so richly evocative it defies definition.
The manna, also known as the white-powder-of-gold was carried in the Ark of the Covenant. This antigravity, room temperature superconductor is needed for cell division in all living things. It was used by God’s angels to create man.
“The gifts that go with this are perfect telepathy, you can know good and evil when it is in the room with you, you can project your thoughts into someone else’s mind, you can levitate, you can walk on water, because it is flowing so much light in you, you literally don’t attract to gravity.”
Could mana and manna be inter-related ??
No matter what your opinion of Sir Laurence Gardiner, this is a truly amazing read, in 3 parts. This is part 1
