Today, the universe played a sick joke on me. I spooked a white tail deer and saw it try to cross a canal of water... let me explain.

I was walking along a road next to a canal that is near my house and deer often frequent the fields. I saw a white tail out in one of the fields and she was by herself. She noticed me and she watched for a while before she sprang away in an opposite direction. She was a good distance away but you can't miss those big flashy tails.

I could clearly see her climb a nearby ridge that lead up to the same road I was on. To the left is a canal which runs with a heavy undercurrent, very dangerous but the top is very serene looking. On the other side of the canal, the mountains begin. It's from these mountains that deer come, cross the canal, and graze in the fields to the valley (which was to my right).

The deer left my view behind some trees but as I predicted she popped onto the road and made for the canal to cross. She kept backing up though, seeming reticent to enter the water. The animals here know the power of the water and look for the best spot to cross. My first thought was that she was too spooked to pick a proper spot to cross. I sent her calming thoughts and was moving slowly, and I was already very far away.

I gazed off and did alot of deep thinking while walking, ignoring the deer. I had some deep thoughts in my mind at the moment about not desiring things from the universe but just accepting what it gives you gratefully... to not worry or be sad and to let all things happen etc.

A minute or two later something floating down the canal caught my eye. From the corner of my vision it looked like a white blanket... when I looked directly at it I completely froze with shock. It was a deer, drowned.

It felt like I got punched in the stomach, I had just sent this deer positive vibes and gave it plenty of room, I didn't mean to spook it. I really like deer. Now it had drown. She had drown because she was too young to know what to do and because I just had to be out at this time of day on my run, she drown right in front of me and I didn't even notice until she went floating by.

What a sick joke, God. I sat down and put my head in my hands, not sure why this affected me so much.

Suddenly I got the fleeting hope that maybe it wasn't the deer I saw earlier. So I got up and ran down the canal, chasing the floating body, and took note of small differences. This deer was smaller, of a different color, and the tail was small and black. It wasn't the doe. It was a baby deer. My stomach felt kind of sick and I almost wanted to throw up. It was one thing to be relieved that a deer hadn't drown to death right in front of me and I hadn't noticed... but it was another to see a dead baby deer!!!

So... today was interesting. I'm glad I didn't drown any deer.

In case anyone wants to know why the baby deer looked different from the white tail, I believe it was a mule deer.

Mule deer usually don't muck around in low elevations with the white tails so I am even more confused as to where the little guy came from.

I am also confused about the white tail disappearing like it did. I assumed it crossed the canal at one point but I never heard splashing or anything like that...

I'm starting to realize this entire story might be a little more personal than it is interesting... I don't know how I can adequately explain the feeling of seeing a drowned deer float past you moments after sending it good thoughts and admiring it from a distance. It's like watching that little bird who you listen to every morning get shot in front of you ... except nature itself pulls the trigger, so you can't blame anyone. You just have this sensation of something beautiful having been lost in front of your eyes.

wow metacomet, fantastic post and story.

I believe you have just had an experience in which the universe/god/cosmic force has provided you with an lesson which will probably help you in the future and learn more about yourself (and others who hear this story).

Even tho' this event has probably ripped you up a little inside it is a lesson that IMO shows you are reaching high levels of understanding and will benefit and need to know the intricate play of emotion and action.

Thanks for sharing this, and believe me, one day this will all perfect sense to you in regards to why you had to experience this situation.

You're blessed!

I always hate it when I'm responsible for the life of another living thing. Too many times i have seen at the last moment something darting across the road. one night I hit a badger. I was going home and wasn't going too fast. it was the spring, male badgers are active with lady badgers at this time and their minds aren't on things like watching out for danger. Anyway, long story cut short. 50 mph, badger, brakes, bump under car. Damn.
I always take time to avoid causing unnecessary deaths, I like to give anything living a chance. Every creature reproduces, every death is an unborn or uncreated offspring and so on for thousands, millions of generations. Imagine if someone had accidentally run over an Australopithecus.

Anyway, whatever message from the deer is up to you to decide, my guess would be to treat life as something unique until proven otherwise, everything is part of a long series of events which is part of what we breath, eat and live in. Every living thing is unique and equally deserving. had we a time machine we would all realise this by stamping on the most insignificant creature a hundred million years ago then returning.
