When the Sadinista Government, a humanitarian regeme, came to power in Nicaragua in 1979 after over 40 years of cruel Somoza dictatorship (president Franklin D. Roosevelt remarked that "Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch.") The new government began giving the communities in their country the means to help themselves, quickly improving education and health care. The government also managed the forest, created water purification and pollution control.
America and the western allies responded by placing a trade embargo on the country and funded a terrorist army named "The Contras", dedicated to seizing power from the from the elected government. They killed women and children, teachers and doctors, slit the throats of militia men and cut off the breasts of militia women while they were still alive. All to support the Western system of exploitation. The were afraid that Nicaragua would set a good example to other third world countries.
US leaders have long professed a dedication to democracy, yet over the last 50 years they have dedicated themselves to overthrowing democratically elected governments in:
Guatamala, Giana, The Dominican Republic, Brazil, Chilie, Uraguay, Syria, Indonesia, Greece (twice), Argentina (twice), Haiiti (twice), Bolivia, Jamaica, Ugoslavia
These countries were all guilty of pursueing policies that occasionally favoured the poor elements and infringed upon the more affluent. In most instances the US-sponsered coups were accompanied by large scale killings of democratic activists.
Not to mention attempts to overthrow socialist revolutionary governments who threw off the chains of opression in Cuba, Angola, Mozambiq, Ethiopia, Iraq - ushering Saddam Hussein, Portugal, South Yemen, Nicaragua, Cambodia, East Hymore, Western Sahara, and other nations.
Even Iran had a popular democratically elected leader called Mohammed Mosaddeq who was removed from power in 1953 by Mi6 and the CIA because he wanted to socialise Irans oil for the benefit of the people.
