And now for a fun game called Answers My Questions! Or not.
Okay, basically I rang Coca-Cola Bottlers (Republic and Northern) Ireland. I asked them if Coca-Cola contained added sodium-fluoride. The woman on the line asked me to please wait, put on some music, and then returned about a minute later. She told me that there was absolutely no added sodium-fluoride. I was like, What? Really? (Maybe I should get these things in writing).
Do you believe her? Did her supervisor really tell her to lie? People already seem to think that added fluoride is the best thing since sliced bread anyway. And don't you think Coca-Cola would fluoridate their cola? I mean, an incredible 66% of water is already fluoridated here, and Coke do a lot worse to their water in other countries apparently.

Also, which is worse, a glass of non fluoridated Diet Coke,or a glass of fluoridated water?

Call them back and say you are doing a project for school and you're voice recording the conversation; then fire away...

Good idea. Excellent idea. Except the same person answers every time, so I think she's sick of me. :D But still. I'd ring Pepsi, but they don't seem to have an Irish phone number. And pepsi.ie is just awful.

Also, everyone; which is worse:

Will do that now. Will also point out that over 70% of all complaints to the FDA are about aspartame.

I'm going to go through my email now to find the email I got from them before about aspartame.

Ok. Here in Australia we have a company called "The Natural Confectionery Company". They make lollies and soft drink. All without artificial colours and preservatives.

Earlier this year I noticed their brand of soft drink could not be purchased anywhere. So I emailed asking; "where can I purchase your soft drink". They replyed saying they longer make the soft drink but you can buy Schweppes lemonaide which has no preservatives.

..and the email came from Cadbury Schweppes.

from the wikipedia page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Natural_Confectionery_Company
In April 2003 The Natural Confectionery Company was bought out by Cadbury Schweppes group of companies.

So Cadbury Schweppes bought out TNCC and killed a alternative good product.

Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company, Mr. Casey. We appreciate your loyalty to our brands.

As you may know, aspartame is a low-Calorie sweetener made primarily of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids, including the two amino acids in aspartame, are the building blocks for proteins and are found widely in nature in both plants and animals. The components of aspartame are found naturally in a number of foods. Milk (8 oz., 403 mg) and chicken (3 oz., 1,026 mg) contain more phenylalanine than a soft drink sweetened with aspartame (8 oz., ranges from approximately 10 to 85 mg). Aspartame is 180 to 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Prior to its approval, aspartame underwent one of the most thorough scientific reviews ever conducted. Regulatory bodies consider it one of the most widely tested ingredients in the food supply. The safety of aspartame has been affirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and leading independent health groups such as the American Medical Association.

Does Diet Coke reduce your IQ, because of aspartame? Please provide references.

Thanks!

I'm puzzled by that line from the email:

If the same components of aspartame were actually found naturally in a number of foods, like milk or chicken; then, why aren't they as sweet as the soft drinks?

Shouldn't they even be proportionately far sweeter (i.e. 8 oz of milk should have been around 5 times sweeter than 8 oz of a soft drink; according to their own figures)?

I guess the answer is clear: neither milk nor chicken have aspartame; though they may have separately the components of aspartame. But it's not the same having nitrogen and glycerine, than nitro-glycerine; or is it?

Good point. Also, I read that these components are bound to others, so they are digested far differently (i.e. safely) than the aspartame found in Diet Coke/Pepsi.

Interesting study, but are they lying? They didn't really look at long term effects, though.

the University of Minnesota's school of public health studied the effects of long-term, hard-core aspartame use in 108 volunteers. In the study, every day for 24 weeks, half of the subjects were given a placebo and the other half were given the same amount of aspartame found in 10 liters of Diet Coke. The Minnesotan researchers discovered no differences between the two groups.

its just a bollocks answer that. at one level, the components of anything can be said to go into making anything else

Exactly!!! That was my point.

To start with, aspartame is an artificial sweetener; so it would be impossible that any natual food had a single miligram.

That was just a standard answer so that customers don't get concern about it. I'm pretty sure they had a marketing team working on the answer.
