SimplySimon, Belkdazar, Ustane and I were driving to Avebury at the meet-up this weekend and came across a field near Alton Barnes where a combine harvester was cutting up some of the crop in the field you see in the photos. What was odd was that it’s too early for the Harvest and also that the combine was cutting up a specific area of the field:confused::eek:. Next to the patch that was being cut up was part of an intact crop circle. Since we saw this spectacle we’ve noticed other fields in the area with “bald patches” on them. Are the farmers in Wiltshire destroying crop circles? If so, why? And on whose orders?:(

I don't know that this is happening widely, but it does happen occasionally. It's usually farmers acting out of anger more than anything and they fear that their fields will be over-run and damaged by people visiting the formation. This happened to a formation I visited at Avebury a couple of years ago. The farmer was in the process of angrily cutting the formation to pieces, when someone apparantly stopped him and suggested he could actually make a few quid out of it, by charging people to visit it. He then promptly left a collection bucket at the gate to the field, asking people to donate £1 to visit it, to cover any costs of damage to his crop. To my knowledge nobody had any problem with this and, thankfully the formation was left enough intact for people to enjoy, which was great news as it was a magnificant formation!
The photo below was photoshopped by someone after the damage, but this is what was saved:

Yeah I think they've always done this. Some farmers just don't like people on their land, simple as that!:(
I witnessed a lovely one get destroyed 2yrs ago at Alton Barnes (just below one of the White Horses). There were lots of people sat on the hill on a nice sunny afternoon admiring it & taking pics, when the farmer came along in his combine, drove around the outer edge of the circle & then proceeded to trash the whole thing in about 10minutes flat!
Everyone was going mad (including my son), all shouting at the farmer to stop but he carried on until it was destroyed & then just buggered off! We did try to send vibes so that the vehicles engine would stop, but we only managed to make it splutter a few times, lol!
I totally agree about the small fee for people going to have a look, it's a great idea & I'm surprised more farmers aren't taking advantage of this tbh. I'd quite happily pay a quid or two to see them. It's not like people trash their crops, from the ones I've seen, everyone has been very respectful of the crop and kept to the given walkways as much as possible.

It seems strange that a farmer would destroy an acre or more of perfectly good crop to erase a crop circle that had damaged his field. It's a bit like cutting of ones nose to spite ones face. Unless somebody was paying him to do it...:confused:

But as I said above; why destroy 3 acres or so of crop in anger at the damage done to just one?

At harvest time I know you'llsee the combines go out and trawl the field; that's unhderstandable. But in this case, the famer is so determinded to erase the crop circle that he'd destroy good crop as well as that flattened by whoever, or whatever, did the circle.

Was this crop circle across the way from the red lion pub?

Not the one in the photo, but one of the "bald patches" was on a hillside visible from the pub and much of the munument.
