What does love mean to all of you?
I'm very interested to know...I'm having a discussion with a friend at work about love.
Do you love selfishly? Or, do you love selflessly?
Is it about you, and what you want? Or, is it about collective infinite love for a greater cause?
I suspect some people love in their own special way, but it benefits only them. Feeds some kind of insecurity perhaps?
Just curious. How would everyone define love?

G'day Tinmenace.
From my personal perspective, LOVE is for-giving. It is similar to a smile and a hug, it can be given but not taken, because it is who we all truly are. LOVE can be shared by offering TRUTH and JOY.
LOVE is free, it has no expectations or demands.
LOVE is forever, eternal, infinite, it never stops.
LOVE is that which is the basis of all creation, the creative factor.
LOVE is without begining or end, for it is a state of BEING !!!
LOVE is Who I Am, for it is the JOYful TRUTH of who we all truly are !!!
THANK YOU.

What does love mean to all of you?
it is "more than a feeling".
it is a feeling too and an emotion, but it is always the source of all feelings and emotions and it's hard to define. or maybe it's impossible to define.
it is said that there are many kinds of love. the ancient greeks have coined the words "eros", "philia", "agape" to distinguish. you can view this as a parallel to mind, body and spirit and other threefolds, but i will stress that there can be infinite variations that result to practically all emotions.
but that's kind of hard to understand and it really doesn't say much, so let me break it down a little bit.
feelings are electrochemical reactions, emotions require thought and can be said that they are intelligent, as dr. Robert C Solomon suggests. generally, emotions is what makes us human beings that can stand out in the animal kingdom, what makes us so complex and diverse. a great part of our intelligence is dependent on them, on how we use them, how we make decisions according to them and so on.
talking about love, it is the one emotion that has been glorified and made a virtue in mankind. additionally, it is maybe the only emotion that is permanent, or long lasting, or even everlasting, also suggested that it can be 'infinite', 'absolute', 'unconditional', 'all energy', 'life', even 'god'.
that's because, you don't love someone or something for a few minutes our hours. if you say for example "i love chocolate", this means that you will probably always love chocolate, you are not going to forget about it the next day. we also quite often say "i will love you forever", "love for ever", "everlasting love" etc. there is no other emotion that we give this kind of permanence, except in some cases when the love for this emotion or its consequences exists as a background.
we sometimes say that fear is the opposite vibration of love and that unconditional love is when no fear is present. so, every other emotion is temporary, like a reaction to a situation, something that fades with time, but something that makes us able to decide and create reasons. fear, anger, depression, envy, etc. are emotions that are necessary for us, but they are not emotions that someone has as a permanent background for their lives. they too derive from love and when someone holds on to them, the situation is probably that they love to. some people love fear, love horror, love anger and aggression, love pain. therefore any emotion that gets sustained has an underlying love for the particular emotion, or the feelings it produces, or the behaviors it results to.
maybe love is the force that is the motivation behind nearly everything. for example there are people who we call killers, they simply love to kill. they love the illusion of power and control, or the action of killing, or they believe that they take the power of the soul by their gaze in their victims' eyes as they fade leaving their last breath. satanists are 'full' of love as well, they love the power that they believe they gain by their rituals. people love material items and get attached to them, others love harming people, others love everyone except themselves, others love only themselves. all kinds of "perversion" comes from it, because if not, they wouldn't be called "perversions" or "distortions", would they.. they would be considered totally different and separate and not anomalies of some sort.
having said all that, lets take a look at hate. people say that "there is a thin line between love and hate". i say that there is no difference at all. love and hate is the same thing, same vibration, viewed from the corner across. and it is too a choice and a decision as love is. either you love or hate something, anything, you bring it to your experience with the same force.
to sum it up, i believe that all emotion is one piece. when people talk about emotions, they actually talk about becoming the emotions, dwelling in them and not really having them, like they have an item in their hands. for example, when you say "i am in love with you", you mean "i am love with respect to you", when you say "i fear darkness", you mean "i am fear when in darkness". some people say that fear is something separate from love, something alien to it. i say that fear is also love, a part of love, as every other emotion. it's like having a bright light source and multiple filters that we apply in front of it, that work as prisms, in order to get a distinguished view of all the colors of the spectrum.
and what about feelings. how we interpret our feelings is simply a decision and a work of thought and language. for example, the feeling of fear, is what is said to cause the hairs at the back of the neck stand, it causes sweat, anxiety, increase of heart beat and breath rhythm, etc. but doesn't love and other feelings as well have the same reactions? in fact, this is not the way to tell what love is, it is the context in which everything happens and how we interpret any situation that we are facing.

hate corrupts your soul, true words. those that hate, have not found their soul, they are merely biological robots operating off ego/mental memes. i call them clones.
