A few more stories like these, tragic though it is whatever the truth, and people will be lining up everywhere.

It's sad when we end up talking more about the consequences than the tragic event, but I guess that's what TPTB enjoy!

Until now most of the comments have been more in favour of anti-vaccines but look how the comments and the ratings are beginning to change because of this. I posted a comment saying rather bluntly I'm afraid... "Still doesn't mean the vaccine's safe or that it even works!" We'll see if it's published.

My partner and I posting leaflets against the vaccine, but I fear people are so fickle they'll start to vilify us as more stories like this are published. "Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more!"

The U.S. government has appointed what the media is ludicrously billing as an “independent” group of health advisors whose job it will be to whitewash adverse reactions to the swine flu vaccine and “explain” them to the public as mere coincidence.

Authorities have been busier honing their propaganda about the H1N1 inoculation program than they have dealing with the actual rollout of the vaccine. A $16 million dollar campaign to coerce Americans into taking the shot is falling flat on its face with increasing numbers rejecting the necessity to take the shot amidst concerns about its side-effects.

Health authorities have been desperately pushing the notion that the vaccine is safe as part of a gargantuan PR campaign, without explaining why well-connected members of the elite have had special access to an additive-free version of the shot that doesn’t contain ingredients like mercury and squalene that are contained in the public version.

As a result of the dangers of the H1N1 vaccine becoming widely known, authorities are moving to get out ahead of the story by acknowledging that millions of health problems in the aftermath of a vaccination campaign will be blamed on the vaccine, citing the 1976 swine flu debacle when the shot proved far deadlier than the actual virus.

Back In September, Reuters reported on how public health officials were expecting “an avalanche of so-called adverse event reports, which are reports of death, illness or other health trauma,” in the two weeks after people receive the vaccine.

“We are going to be overwhelmed with potential events,” said Mike Osterholm, a public health expert at the University of Minnesota.

Authorities therefore resolved to dismiss any connection to the swine flu shots a host of heart attacks, strokes and miscarriages that “will be blamed on the H1N1 vaccine”.

Now the government has accelerated these efforts by appointing a group of “independent” experts to “track the vaccine’s safety,” according to an Associated Press report.

The claim that the group is “independent” is a complete misnomer. How can a group appointed by and dictated its brief by the government be considered “independent”?

In addition, the group will be headed up by none other than Dr. Marie McCormick of the Harvard School of Public Health. McCormick and her affiliated organizations have routinely issued reports over the past 10 years supporting the government’s position on the link between vaccines and autism, dismissing a correlation entirely despite overwhelming evidence that contradicts this notion. McCormick has been widely criticized by other health experts for her dogged denial of the link between vaccines and autism.

So far from being “independent,” the group is in fact appointed by the government and lead by one of the government’s chief whitewash proponents in the context of vaccine dangers and side-effects.

The rollout of the vaccine has been limited to far fewer people than the government originally intended, partly due to a supply shortage and partly because more than half of Americans have refused to take the shot. The government’s efforts to dismiss concerns about side-effects will likely kick into high gear when more batches of the vaccine become available.

The media is framing concerns about side-effects by concentrating on health problems in the immediate aftermath of the vaccination, thereby providing them with the ammunition to dismiss concerns about side-effects altogether if few cases of death or injury occur. However, the real concerns about the dangers of vaccines do not revolve around skin rashes or minor ailments, they relate to the longer term effect of the build-up of toxic mercury in the body as well as squalene and the cancerous animal cells that are admittedly contained in the vaccine. Symptoms could therefore take months or even years to manifest, enough time for a connection to the swine flu shot to be forgotten in the public eye. Expect this to be exploited to the maximum by the “independent” experts the government has appointed to whitewash dangers associated with the vaccine

iv brought this point up a few times and the solution is :confused: id probably head for the capital london if there were road blocks or check points as are in the states then im not sure away from the city probably.blocking some sites i think is crap if the net goes it will totaly go down,it will give people something to bitch about whilst the PTB wheel out there end game. we should all atleast be clear of what do to if this happens instead of the headless chicken routine...

say the town/city hall
if the pol/mil decide not to back us then
they will be waiting
so do it covertly
obv if u can form a group in advance, u r gonna be much better prepared..

Evidence appears to suggest that Baxter International is responsible for a new deadly outbreak of viral pneumonia in Ukraine.

In February of 2009 Bloomberg reported that Baxter “accidentally” send vaccine material containing both live Avian bird flu and seasonal influenza to multiple laboratories worldwide. A laboratory decided to test the vaccine on it’s ferrets, but the ferrets all unexpectedly died. It must be noted that Baxter has made a “mistake” like this before. Blood products produced by Baxter once containd HIV. Thousands of haemophiliacs died due to this, and many went on to infect their spouses.

Later in the year, a bizarre story emerged on the internet. The Huffington Post reported on a a man named Joseph Moshe who was arrested after a hours long standoff with the police because he had supposedly made threats against the White House. The man was able to withstand multiple rounds of tear gas.

However, the internet community was very skeptical of the true reasons behidn this man’s arrest. Comments on the Huffington Post website immediately began pouring in about an unreported side to this story, namely that Joseph Moshe was a Mossad Agent specialized in biological warfare who called into a radio show to warn people about a biological weapn that was being made by Baxter international that would be spread through vaccine and would cause a plague upon it’s release.

Although anyone can make a doomsday claim and we should never believe anyone (and it must be said that the Truth movement handled this well, the message was spread without being proclaimed as gospel) the amazing part about Moshe’s claim was the location where Moshe said the biological weapon was being produced.

Moshe claimed that Baxter’s laboratory in the Ukraine out of all places was creating this biological weapon. All of this came out in the beginning of August, which is more than 2 months before the situation that is currently unfolding. For Moshe to correctly name the country where a new epidemic would be unleashed, requires either inside information, or an incredible coincidence as anyone with a basic knowledge of statistics can confirm for himself.

Let us assume for a moment that every person on our planet has an equal chance of giving rise to a new lethal epidemic due to a virus that mutates as it spreads through his body. The Ukraine has 46 million inhabitants. The current estimated global population is about 6.7 billion. This means that if a new epidemic were to arise, the chance of this epidemic starting in the Ukraine would be 0.69%. However, it appears that this virus is a form of flu. This makes the odds of being right when guessing that a deadly flu is going to break out in the Ukraine even smaller. The reason for this is that back in early August the vast majority of influenza infections were found in different countries than the Ukraine. In fact, on 30 Oktober, Earthtimes reported that Ukraine had officially reported only two cases of swine flu, and no deaths, until last Friday. This deadly epidemic appears to have arrived out of nowhere in the Ukraine.

Moshe’s biomed profile appears to confirm his position as a microbiologist. Furthermore, this page with Baxter’s contact information for it’s Ukraine office confirms that Baxter has a presence in the Ukraine.

It must also be noted that massive numbers of microbiologists have been dying bizarre deaths. This case of what appears to be a brave man who sacrificed it all to bring us this message may explain why so many microbiologists have been murdered. The fact that this man managed to predict an outbreak of highly lethal influenza in a place where we would least expect it, 2 months before it a actually occured, lends credence to his claim that Baxter International is responsible for the outbreak and shows that top microbiologists can pose a problem to the people responsible for this ongoing disaster.

Massive pneumonia attacked the lungs, filling them with fluid; blood gushed from the nose. Death was quick, savage, and terrifying.

Compare this to reports that are coming out from Ukraine:

Five persons have died from the flue in Lviv, four men and one woman, says emergency hospital chief doctor Myron Borysevych.

Two of the dead patients were in the 22-35 age group, with 2 others over 60. He diagnosed the disease as viral pneumonia.

This video is of the Council on Foreign Relations discussing strategy for getting people to take the H1N1 vaccine. Besides them calling people who don't want the vaccine "crazy people", there's nothing really new except that at 5:20 in the video they are discussing how to get people to take the unpopular vaccine and a woman says:

"I think what would work better would be to say that there is a shortage and people would tend to line up more for something that's in demand." (and then laughing).

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that the problem with the flu epidemic in Ukraine is being politicized.

"The flu epidemic in our country will end after the presidential campaign," the parliamentary press service quoted him as saying at a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"I get the impression that Ukrainian politicians have subtly switched the attention of the people to this problem, while all other problems have stopped being urgent. The problem exists and it should be resolved, but Ukraine was offered hysteria, and the people serve as an election tool," Lytvyn said.

Moratinos, in turn, said that Spain is ready to share its experience in fighting the flu epidemic and provide assistance in this to Ukraine.

Invited to a swine flu party? It would be better to stay home and wash your hair.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, attending a swine party with the hope of contracting the virus and gaining immunity against it, isn’t a wise decision.

Kristy Emerson, spokeswoman for the Mesa County Health Department, said she hasn’t heard of any local swine flu parties, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

“That’s so scary,” she said. “It’s so much better to prevent an illness than hoping to get a mild to moderate case. If you expose your child and your child gets a bad case, it could kill them.”

The reasoning behind swine flu parties is similar to the chicken pox parties of the past. Then, parents would expose their children to another child with chicken pox so their children would develop the disease and gain immunity.

Swine flu however, affects people differently and young children are at a high risk of developing complications from the virus.

Chicken pox and swine flu aren’t the only illnesses peole wanted to have parties for.

In years past, people contacted the health department wanting to participate in West Nile virus parties to “get exposed to it so they wouldn’t have to get it again,” Emerson said. West Nile is transmitted to people by mosquitoes.

“While the disease seen in the current 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak has been mild for many people, it also has been severe and even fatal for others,” the CDC said on its Web site. “There is no way to predict with certainty what the outcome will be for an individual or, equally important, for others to whom the intentionally infected person may spread the virus.”

Instead of wondering whether to attend a swine flu party, get vaccinated, Emerson said.

Another shipment of H1N1 vaccine will be available this week at the Health Department for people in the priority groups.

Much of the initial hesitation among parents about getting their children vaccinated against the H1N1 virus seems to have subsided as the virus has spread, Emerson said.

While the Front Range peaked last week with its cases of H1N1, the Western Slope’s numbers of H1N1 cases will likely peak between now and mid- November, she said.

Mesa County has been receiving vaccine shipments weekly, but some of the state’s counties have not received any vaccine, Emerson said.

There have been 25 deaths in Colorado attributed to the H1N1 virus; seven of those who died were children.

As of Oct. 24, 1,306 people with the virus have been hospitalized. Mesa County reported 13 people hospitalized with H1N1 virus between Aug. 30 and Oct. 24, according to the state.

State laboratory testing shows that 99 percent of flu viruses in Colorado are the H1N1 virus.

“I think people are getting frustrated that we don’t have the (vaccine) supply to meet the demands,” Emerson said. “I think there are people that are afraid. It’s just as frustrating for us to not be able to provide it.”

they will hate this cos people will say, "we have already had swine flu, no need to vaccinate us" so of course they will knock SF parties, not that I think they are a good idea either mind.....

And then they can say, "oh the virus has mutated so you still need the vaccine...and then, "oh we need another vaccine as the virus has mutated and this one is no good!"

The Spanish Influenza of 1918 was the greatest, most lethal pandemic the world has ever known. In its 10-month duration between 22 and 40 million people perished worldwide. Estimates place the death toll in the United States at over 675,000 with over 22 million becoming ill. Leading physicians of the time thought the illness a bacterium, but in fact it was something not yet discovered--a virus. American were familiar with the flu; it sent you to bed, made you miserable for 3 or 4 days with fever, muscle aches, and congestion, then left you shaky for about a week. It made millions sick, yet killed only the oldest, youngest, and most feeble.

The 1918 influenza was not the flu Americans were familiar with. The America of 1918 was in its second year of involvement in World War I, and millions of young Americans were in uniform. Great military camps were established throughout the United States for the training of soldiers and filled to overflowing. Most of these camps were near large cities or well populated areas. Railroads moved these soldiers rapidly across the country toward the East Coast to pack into troopships bound for the battlefields of Europe. Sailors and merchant seamen who crowded port cities had access to all parts of the world.

Civilians flooded cities to work in the expanded war industry, huge rallies and parades were held, all to support the war effort. The country was the perfect breeding ground for the coming pandemic.

The pandemic had three distinct waves, the first coming from the American heartland, most probably Kansas. During March[,] soldiers and civilians around Ft. Riley, KS, rapidly became ill; some of them died, their lungs swollen with bloody fluid. The disease spread to other camps and port cities. Statistics of military and civilian deaths in March and April of 1918 demonstrated a sharp rise between the ages 21 to 29. The illness astounded physicians with its rapid onset, how rapidly it spread, and how quickly it killed those in the most robust of health.

Then, that summer, it subsided, and the United States was virtually free of the flu. However, the disease was on the move, riding the troopships to Europe and turning them into a nightmare of illness and death.

The influenza then arrived in Europe with the 1.5 million soldiers who brought more death with their virus than the weapons they carried. It raged across Europe and into Asia, eventually killing more American soldiers than the war. Approximately 80 percent of Spain's population contracted the flu giving rise to the rumor it started there.

Sometime, late in the summer of 1918, the virus mutated in a response to increasing human antibodies. Now in its most virulent form it returned in the same ships that took it to Europe, making landfall in Boston in September. There, it killed over 2000 people.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia's population in 1918 was 1,700,000 with war industry adding another 300,000 transient workers. The city was teeming with large ghettos representing every oppressed ethnic group from Europe. The city's medical resources, some of the best in the country, were strained. Twenty-six percent of Philadelphia physicians and a much larger percentage of nurses were away serving with the military; 75 percent of Philadelphia's hospitals' medical and surgical staffs were overseas. Although the city's board of health knew the flu had gotten to Europe in July, and had made it to Boston by the third week of September, it still did not make it a reportable disease. The flu was coming to Philadelphia and the city was not prepared.

The disease appeared first at the sprawling naval base and shipyard on 18 September. The next day 600 sailors were ill; at the same time civilian hospitals started receiving patients. The board of health now began to act by instituting a public campaign against coughing, sneezing, and spitting. Philadelphia was about to become the American city with the highest, most rapidly accumulating, death toll in the worst pandemic in recorded history. In a single day, the death toll reached 1,700.

Dr. Paul A. Lewis, director of the Phipps Institute of Philadelphia stated he had isolated the cause of the flu, Pfeiffer's Bacillus. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that this discovery armed the medical profession with the absolute knowledge on which to base its attack on the disease. they both were wrong! Despite the crisis, on 28 September, 200,000 people gathered in the streets to view the kickoff of the Fourth Liberty Loan Drive. The parade stretched 23 blocks through the city; death marched with it.

By 4 October the University of Pennsylvania's newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian reported 636 new cases and 139 deaths. The paper would continue to give a daily count throughout the epidemic. On that day the board of health closed all schools, churches, theaters, and saloons. All citizens were ordered to wear gauze masks in public, "Obey the laws and wear the gauze protect your jaws from septic paws." Those daring not to wear masks were ridiculed by being called "slackers," the worst epithet of the day, or were physically run off the streets. A sneeze or cough sent people scurrying.

As the death toll mounted, a frantic public stripped medicines from pharmacy shelves. Students from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Temple University assisted in filling prescriptions, mostly for whiskey, as it was the only place one could get it. As medications disappeared, people turned to folk remedies and ridiculous concoctions sold by charlatans.

On 10 October, 528 died in the city. Thirty-fourth street, in front of Philadelphia General hospital, was crowded with vehicles of every description bringing the sick, the dying, and, in most cases, the dead to the hospital. The scene was repeating itself in front of every hospital in the city. Many of the staff of PGH were sick because this was a disease of necessity (meaning care was provided for the symptoms, not the cure), the majority of work fell to nurses. PGH School of Nursing's chief nurse, Lillian Clayton, worked 48-hour shifts. Sheer exhaustion allowed many of the nurses to become ill; four died. Miss Clayton offered to allow all preliminary (freshman) nursing students to return home rather than face the disease, yet all volunteered to stay. Six eventually died from flu.

Throughout the country the United States Health Department was besieged by calls for more nurses to care for the sick. GEN John J. Pershing, commander of all American troops in Europe sent an urgent appeal for 1,500 more nurses. Philadelphia's trained nurses were not enough; student nurse and lay volunteers were quickly utilized.

The University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing's 1919 yearbook describes the scene: "Then came the epidemic of influenza, and our plans for service (in the armed forces) were brought to a standstill, for we had all we could manage at home. Ever in our hearts will remain the memory of those classmates, Grace Virginia Fitzgerald and Marie Luise O. Boremann who gave their lives in the influenza epidemic October twelfth and thirteen 1918."

The frustration of Philadelphia nurses can best be illustrated by the 1919 annual report of the Chestnut Hill Hospital's School of Nursing where a passage reads, "most tragic because of the loss by death of so many nurses and because of our inability to meet the needs of the patients who came to us during the epidemic of influenza that swept the city."

Philadelphia's well-organized Society of Visiting Nurses, "had every thought and previous action blotted from their minds," by the great tragedy. Nurses were busy around the clock caring for the thousands of sick who could not reach a hospital. They described entering houses where all members of a family were dead. Some had both parents dead and the children starving. In some neighborhoods they were hailed as saviors. In others they were shunned due to the white gowns and gauze masks they wore.

The Philadelphia Automobile Club volunteered and effectively transported the nurses on their rounds. Care of the sick was made even more difficult by the refusal of some people to assist in the care of neighbors and even relatives for fear of contracting the disease. The Society of Visiting Nurses, in its 1918 report claimed the influenza epidemic gave it purpose and resources it never would have had otherwise. Members cared for thousands during the epidemic and some gave their lives.

A growing problem that threatened the living was the dead. Bodies started piling up in makeshift morgues and in the streets. In a vision not seen since the Black Death of medieval Europe, carts went through the street, their drivers calling for people to bring out the dead for burial. Wagonloads of bodies, some dead over a week, were buried in Potter's Field at Second and Luzerne Streets. Highway workers dug large trenches and filled them to capacity. the provmise that bodies could later be retrieved and reinterred after the epidemic subsided persuaded relatives to give up loved ones. Relatives never recovered most of the bodies.
Aftermath
By October 27th the epidemic began to subside as quickly as it came. Other parts of the country would continue to suffer from the pandemic well into the spring of 1919. The passing of influenza through the city left an estimated 12,191 dead. In but 4 weeks, there were 47,094 reported cases.

As soon as the dying stopped the forgetting began. The 1918 influenza pandemic is seldom mentioned, and most Americans have never heard of it. What is amazing is just how quickly the amnesia began. In researching archives, I was shocked at how little appeared in journals, yearbooks, and annual reports during the pandemic or within a year of its passing. And here was a disease that killed more people in less time than any other event in world history. It was as though it had never happened. It certaily is true that the human mind always trieds to expunge the intolerable from memory.

Medical science remains haunted by the disappearance of the virus. Where did it come from, and where did it go? Virologists are only now slowly unlocking the secrets of the Spanish Flu from recently discovered lung tissue specimens from 1918. Apparently, the virus' savageness was due to a flu strain that had undergone a mutation. Influenza viruses mutate constantly in what is known as antigenic drift, usually in such minimal ways that last year's flu or vaccine offers at least some protection against this year's outbreak. But about every decade or two, such drift may be so dramatic as to be regarded by the human body as an entirely new virus. Then it sweeps through the human population with a vengeance. In 1957 the Asian flu killed 70,000 Americans. In 1968 the Hong Kong flu killed 28,000.

In a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, epidemiologists believe the probability is high that another dangerous new strain of the influenza virus will emerge. Combined with the world's increased population and jet-age travel, the stage could be set for another catastrophe. This pandemic could spread so fast that research laboratories could not isolate, prepare, and distribute an appropriate vaccine in time. Jeffery K. Taubenberger of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the primary researcher of the 1918 virus points out that if the records are any indication, another pandemic is inevitable. The question is when.

The Spanish Influenza's legacy is carved in stone, amid the cemeteries of cities, towns, and villages throughout [the] United States. A walk through any one of them will possibly reveal a mass grave or perhaps a poignant tombstone inscribed with the year of death--1918.

WHO Targets Hemorrhagic H1N1 Cases in Lviv Ukraine

Work will initially begin in Lviv region, where reported numbers of cases showing severe manifestations of acute respiratory illness have been especially high. Two virologists on the team have started working at the National Influenza Centre and the laboratories of the Central Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Kyiv to provide diagnostic support.

The above comments from the WHO update on Ukraine strike a more serious tone than yesterday's quotes from WHO spokespersons playing down the alarming number of hospitalized and fatal cases, as well as media reports spinning political considerations, or politicians claiming only 15 confirmed H1N1 cases. As the WHO update clearly states, the dominant influenza circulating worldwide is swine H1N1 and it is assumed that most cases in the Ukraine are swine H1N1. Since the official government website lists 19,189 influenza cases (in addition to more than 235,000 ARI cases), the willingness of politicians to cite 15 confirmed cases, as well as media support in the distribution of the propaganda, is unfortunate.

The more severe manifestation of ARI cases are clearly hemorrhagic disease that fills lungs with blood and produces bleeding at all orifices, which are stark reminders of 1918 pandemic cases which were also linked to a swine H1N1.

Samples have arrived at Mill Hill in London, :eek: and sequence data should be available shortly. Since current swine H1N1 produced lethal infections in previously healthy young adults, and produced hemorrhagic disease, changes in the viral genome may be absent or minor. Therefore, release of the sequences to the entire scientific community would be useful.

Similarly, an update on the number of hemorrhagic cases would be useful. Rumors have suggested that such the number of such cases is significantly higher than the six described in media reports.

Ukrainian News Agency "Fraza" reported that, according to informed sources, "it has been confirmed 100 % Pneumonic Plague in Ukraine".

The Agency asserts that "the head physician of the medical institutions has sent out an informal disposal - not to sow panic, to refute the information about the plague, and to speak only of swine influenza".

It is also required to distribute masks at health facilities with 8 levels of protection and anti-plague protection costumes. There is also an informal order not to allow any visitors to see the patients.

According to the "Fraza" agency, "today in Ukraine pneumonic plague is going in parallel with swine flu. The plague has killed over 60 people, and about 14 from the flu.

Meanwhile, the press service of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine reported that there is only one death from "California" virus A/N1N1 in Ukraine.

"In Ukraine there are 22 cases recorded of the virus A/N1N1 disease and there is only one fatal consequence as a result. All other cases of death from influenza has only a speculative attitude to "California" virus," press service reports.

The situation with the epidemic of influenza is a complex and unpredictable because of the propensity of influenza A/H1N1 virus to mutation, said First Deputy Minister of Health Mr. Lazoryshynets on Monday, November 2.

"The situation is complicated and unpredictable. We found a strain of this virus in our laboratory ... This virus is dangerous because it can mutate, and we can get a very different kind of virus, which was in Latin America or in Mexico, now it is European ", - said Lazoryshynets at a press conference, the "Correspondent" magazine informs.

At a press conference Lazoryshynets also said that there are 22 officially confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1 in Ukraine.

First Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchinov previously stated that as of Monday morning, November 2, there are 64 registered deaths in Ukraine from flu and acute respiratory viral infections.

Meantime, according to official information the highest level of epidemiological risk is declared in Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislav) area, from 2 November. This decision was made by Ivano-Frankivsk Regional emergency epidemiological commission at the extended session on November 2.

In accordance with the Commission, quarantine will last for all educational institutions in the area until 20 November, a commission to monitor the distribution of medicines is also made, which come in the region as humanitarian aid.

The commission agreed that health workers will provide individual first aid kit. There will be extra transport allocated to visit patients by the district doctors.
According to the Ministry of Health, today in Ukraine there are 255 000 registered cases of influenza and SARS, of whom 15 000 were hospitalized.

Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine introduced a permanent monitoring of the situation on a clear implementation of the planned anti-epidemic measures in public transport.

A special monitoring group studied the transport department on November 2, how the anti-epidemiological measures were applied at the Kiev railway station, central bus station of the capital and the International airport "Borispol".

Polish epidemiologists November 3 arrive in Ukraine for obtaining specimens from patients with the Ukrainians. The experts will arrive in Lviv, where it is supposed to take 190 samples.

The "Spanish" influenza pandemic killed at least 20 million people in 1918-1919, making it the worst infectious pandemic in history. Understanding the origins of the 1918 virus and the basis for its exceptional virulence may aid in the prediction of future influenza pandemics. RNA from a victim of the 1918 pandemic was isolated from a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, lung tissue sample. Nine fragments of viral RNA were sequenced from the coding regions of hemagglutinin, neuraminidase, nucleoprotein, matrix protein 1, and matrix protein 2. The sequences are consistent with a novel H1N1 influenza A virus that belongs to the subgroup of strains that infect humans and swine, not the avian subgroup.

The "Spanish" influenza pandemic killed over 20 million people in 1918 and 1919, making it the worst infectious pandemic in history. Here, we report the complete sequence of the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of the 1918 virus. Influenza RNA for the analysis was isolated from a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung tissue sample prepared during the autopsy of a victim of the influenza pandemic in 1918. Influenza RNA was also isolated from lung tissue samples from two additional victims of the lethal 1918 influenza: one formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sample and one frozen sample obtained by in situ biopsy of the lung of a victim buried in permafrost since 1918. The complete coding sequence of the A/South Carolina/1/18 HA gene was obtained. The HA1 domain sequence was confirmed by using the two additional isolates (A/New York/1/18 and A/Brevig Mission/1/18). The sequences show little variation. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the 1918 virus HA gene, although more closely related to avian strains than any other mammalian sequence, is mammalian and may have been adapting in humans before 1918.

ABSTRACT

The coding region of influenza A virus RNA segment 7 from the 1918 pandemic virus, consisting of the open reading frames of the two matrix genes M1 and M2, has been sequenced. While this segment is highly conserved among influenza virus strains, the 1918 sequence does not match any previously sequenced influenza virus strains. The 1918 sequence matches the consensus over the M1 RNA-binding domains and nuclear localization signal and the highly conserved transmembrane domain of M2. Amino acid changes that correlate with high yield and pathogenicity in animal models were not found in the 1918 strain. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that both genes were mammalian adapted and that the 1918 sequence is very similar to the common ancestor of all subsequent human and classical swine matrix segments. The 1918 sequence matches other mammalian strains at 4 amino acids in the extracellular domain of M2 that differ consistently between avian and mammalian strains, suggesting that the matrix segment may have been circulating in human strains for at least several years before 1918.


INTRODUCTION

The influenza virus pandemic of 1918 resulted in the deaths of up to 50 million people worldwide (23, 35). Recently, samples of the 1918 virus RNA have been obtained from several widely separated geographical sites (39). Analyses of viral hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase, and nonstructural genes suggest that the 1918 virus was genetically uniform and adapted to its human host (3, 39, 40). The sequences of these genes, however, did not reveal features that could account for the virulence of the virus, although several hypotheses could be discounted. Explanations for the lethality of the virus might therefore lie in the other five viral gene segments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Isolation of A/Brevig Mission/1/18 RNA and amplification of the matrix segment. RNA was isolated by methods described in other publications (27, 48). The 982-nucleotide M1 and M2 complete coding region of the 1918 influenza virus segment 7 was amplified in 15 overlapping fragments varying in length from 97 to 142 nucleotides. Each fragment was reverse transcribed, amplified, and sequenced at least twice. Reverse transcription-PCR, isolation of products, and sequencing have been described previously (39, 40, 48). A list of the primers used is available upon request.

Phylogenetic analyses. Nucleotide sequences of the M1 and M2 genes were aligned with the genes from other influenza virus isolates by using Lasergene software (DNAStar, Madison, Wis.). Phylogenetic analyses were carried out by use of the neighbor-joining algorithm with distance parameter (p-distance) (Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis, version 1.01, 1993). All analyses were bootstrapped 100 times.

Viral strains. Matrix segment sequences used in this analysis were obtained from GenBank. For a list of the strains and abbreviations used, see Table 1.

RESULTS

Sequence of the matrix gene segment. The entire matrix coding sequence (982 nucleotides) from the shared start codon at nucleotide 26 of the matrix segment to the stop codon of the M2 open reading frame (ORF) at nucleotide 1007 was determined from the frozen sample obtained from Brevig Mission, Alaska (A/Brevig Mission/1/18 [H1N1]), Brevig18. The 1918 sequence and a map of the two overlapping reading frames of an influenza A virus matrix segment are shown in Fig. 1. The theoretical translations of the two ORFs, M1 and M2, are indicated.

DISCUSSION

Several model systems have indicated that small changes in the matrix proteins can have large effects on phenotype. Replacing the matrix segment of human viruses with that of PR34 consistently results in a higher yield of the strain for vaccine development (2). The PR34 M1 gene has been shown to confer high-growth characteristics in single-gene reassortant strains (55). The PR34 M1 protein, however, differs by fewer than 10 amino acids from modern human strains. Other studies indicate that the matrix segment of WSN33 (like PR34, a repeatedly passaged derivative of an early human strain) can also confer a high-yield phenotype (55). However, between them, the M1 proteins of WSN33 and PR34 share only a few amino acids that differ consistently from modern human strains and each has additional, unique differences. Therefore, it is not clear which amino acid changes are responsible for the high-yield phenotype or even if the same amino acids are responsible in both PR34 and WSN33. At those M1 sites where PR34 and WSN33 share amino acids found in few other strains, the Brevig18 sequence instead matches the human consensus. Only at M1 site 218 does Brevig18 share a characteristic with PR34 and WSN33 that distinguishes them from modern human strains. PR34, WSN33, and Brevig18 all retain the threonine that is found in avian strains, whereas all subsequent human strains have replaced the avian threonine with an alanine or valine.

Introduction

We are all familiar with the tell-tale signs of the flu: sneezing, coughing, aching, and overall physical weakness. In fact, this is probably no different from what our American ancestors encountered before World War I. However, all this changed in 1918, when a particularly virulent form of influenza - the so-called Spanish Flu - appeared, causing more deaths (over 50 million) than had resulted from the entire First World War which lasted four years.

Spanish Flu victims suffered massive pneumonia and fatal pulmonary complications: they literally drowned in their own body fluids. Lungs filled with fluid and their skin became markedly discolored from the lack of oxygen. Mysteriously, it killed more young than old. The death rate was greatest among ages 15 to 40.

Navy medical professionals were among those who were overwhelmed trying to fight this virus. Treatment was essentially non-existent. The US Navy was forced to rely on quarantine or infectious disease stations as brave doctors, hospital corpsmen, and nurses cared for the daily needs of the patients.

Navy nurse Josie Brown, who served at Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois in 1918, later described what happened there and in many hospitals around the country:

The morgues were packed almost to the ceiling with bodies stacked one on top of another. The morticians worked day and night. You could never turn around without seeing a big red truck loaded with caskets for the train station so bodies could be sent home.

We didn’t have the time to treat them. We didn’t take temperatures; we didn’t even have time to take blood pressure.

We would give them a little hot whisky toddy; that’s about all we had time to do. They would have terrific nosebleeds with it. Sometimes the blood would just shoot across the room. You had to get out of the way or someone’s nose would bleed all over you.


During the peak of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the US Navy operated hospitals in the Azores; Brest, France; Canacao, Philippine Islands; Cape May, New Jersey; Charleston, South Carolina; Chelsea, Massachusetts; Genoa, Italy; Gibraltar; Great Lakes, Illinois; Guam; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Key West, Florida; League Island, Pennsylvania; Leith, Scotland; London, England; New London, Connecticut; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York, New York; Norfolk, Virginia; Parris Island, South Carolina; Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii; Pensacola, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Puget Sound, Washington; Queenstown, Ireland; Strathpeffer, Scotland; St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; and Washington, DC.

At these medical facilities, and at naval stations throughout the world, one could read the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery “Circular 1” which said:

For the protection of others, if you are really sick stay at home and remain there until the fever is over. A day in bed at the very beginning may also save you from serious consequences. . .

If you are up and about, protect healthy persons from infection—don’t spray others with the secretions from your nose and throat in coughing, sneezing, laughing, or talking. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief. Boil your handkerchiefs and other contaminated articles. Wash your hands frequently. Keep away from others as much as possible while you have a cough.


In 1918, Navy and Marine patients totaling 121,225 were admitted at Navy medical facilities with influenza. Of these patients, 4,158 died of the virus, and sick patients spent over one million sick days in these facilities worldwide.

Of the heroes who treated these patients some made the ultimate sacrifice. Thirty-one were nurses, all of whom would be awarded the British Victoria Cross. Three of these women - Marie Louise Hidell (Naval Hospital Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Edna Place (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and Lillian Murphy (Hampton Roads, Virginia) - were awarded the Navy Cross, posthumously.

Recently, the spread of the Avian Flu has become a major concern. It may mutate and possibly mimic the virulence and symptoms of the 1918 Spanish Influenza. If this happens, the US Navy will again be on the forefront of medical care.

More than 68,000 kids expected to get shots or nasal mist

Not counting last-minute stragglers bearing late par-ental consent forms, 396 Kalihi Kai Elementary students went under the seasonal flu needle yesterday morning, along with 126 kids who took the vaccine in mist form via nasal spray.

There were few, if any, tears. Kids such as fourth-grader Marc Nunez, 9 — who expressed apprehension about getting his shot beforehand — calmly stroll-ed away afterward saying it didn't hurt much.

His secret: "Just look away when they do it," he said.

The occasion was the kickoff of "Protect Hawai'i's Keiki: Stop Flu at School," a program that is expected to inoculate more than 68,000 elementary and middle school students in 334 public, private and charter schools in Hawai'i through Dec. 3.

The school vaccination clinics are being provided by the state Department of Health in collaboration with numerous public and private schools, as well as health care providers and community partner groups.

In the midst of that vaccination effort, the DOH is getting ready to launch a second elementary and middle school program next month to vaccinate students for H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu.

"Other states haven't done something like this," said Gov. Linda Lingle, referring to the fact that two years ago, Hawai'i became the first state to offer free flu vaccine to elementary and middle school students statewide.

"That's why we're so well positioned for the H1NI (swine flu)" vaccination campaign, Lingle said.

The governor was at the school in part to remind students that their parents would soon be receiving another consent form — this one for the H1N1 vaccination program. Lingle encouraged students and parents to read the forms and, if they are comfortable with it, to sign it and mail it back.

Lingle also reminded the students that it's important to be vaccinated for both the seasonal and H1N1 flu strains.

Eventually, she said, the Department of Health and the Hawai'i National Guard would be administering swine flu vaccine to the general public statewide.

"It's not just going to be children, or course," Lingle said. "It will be everybody."

Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist, said the percentage of student participation has increased with each school vaccination clinic program.

"Based on our consent reviews, there definitely seems to be an increased interest among the kids," Park said. "And among the adults as well, actually. Because we also offer vaccinations to the school staff and faculty."

Last year, the total came to 62,000 students and 9,500 staff and teachers.

"I can tell you that in past years we have vaccinated about 43 percent of the kids in Hawai'i ages 5 to 15. And it looks like we will definitely surpass that this year."

Janice Okubo, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health, said one reason the percentage for the free vaccination program isn't higher is because a substantial percentage of parents have their children vaccinated before the beginning of the school year.

"Some parents prefer to take their kids to a private physician," Okubo said. "We would certainly like to break the 50 percent mark, and we're hoping that's going to happen this year."

The student H1N1 vaccination campaign should run through January, Okubo said. The DOH hopes to vaccinate as many students in the swine flu campaign as it will in the seasonal flu program, she said.

Health Minister Recep Akdağ stressed the importance of vaccinations against swine flu and responded to the Turkish prime minister’s refusal to be vaccinated in an interview with broadcaster CNNTürk on Tuesday.

Typically the number of flu cases rise in December and in accordance with different scenarios considered by the Health Ministry, Akdağ said. “If we protect ourselves and the risk groups with vaccinations, then the peak number of infections for January and February will remain lower than expected,” he said.

In response to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s announcement Tuesday that vaccinations would remain optional and that he himself would not consider one, Akdağ said he appreciated the prime minister’s efforts to make the vaccinations available by setting aside money for them but added that there had never been an issue of forcing vaccinations on people.

When asked if the prime minister’s reluctance to be vaccinated would lead people to say, “If the prime minister doesn’t consider it necessary to vaccinate, why should I?” Akdağ replied that the prime minister should not serve as an example because he is not within the group most at risk for contracting the H1N1 virus.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

During the 1918 flu pandemic there were no antibiotics, other than sulfur drugs, no IV fluids and no respirators -- all the doctors of that era could offer was a warm bed and aspirin.

Now it appears that this misguided advice may actually have caused a significant proportion of deaths by way of pulmonary edema, an abnormal build up of fluid in your lungs that can be caused by taking too much aspirin.

There are a couple of lessons to be learned from this new revelation.

One, you must be very wary of taking a medication because there are always risks involved -- even for an over-the-counter drug like aspirin.

Aside from potentially increasing your risk of pancreatic cancer, kidney failure, and cataracts, aspirin carries side effects such as:

* Stomach ulcers and bleeding
* Hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke
* Allergic reaction
* Ringing in the ears and hearing loss

And in cases of chronic overdose, in which normal daily doses build up in your body over time, symptoms such as the following can develop:

* Fatigue
* Slight fever
* Confusion
* Collapse
* Rapid heart beat
* Uncontrollable rapid breathing

The second lesson to be learned from this finding has to do with its implications on modern-day pandemics, including the current H1N1 swine flu debacle.

If Flu Was Not the Real Killer in 1918 …

The recommendations and projections for the swine flu pandemic are flawed, as many projections for a new pandemic have been based on a worst-case 1918 scenario, in which tens of millions of people would die globally.

However, since aspirin overdose may have been a major contributor the death toll would actually be much lower. Recent studies have also indicated that strep infections, rather than the flu virus itself, may have killed most people during the 1918 influenza pandemic, which further adds to the notion that the swine flu is being over-hyped.

Strep is much easier to treat than the flu using modern medicine, so a new pandemic might be much less dire than it was in the early 20th century.

That is, as long as the same mistake is not made twice regarding medications.

What Medication May be Contributing to “Flu” Deaths in 2009?

In 1918, it was aspirin. Today it’s Tamiflu that is being passed out like candy to nearly anyone with flu-like symptoms.

Serious side effects of Tamiflu include convulsions, delirium or delusions, and 14 deaths in children and teens have been reported as a result of neuropsychiatric problems and brain infections. Japan actually banned Tamiflu for children in 2007 because of the steep risks.

It was also around this time that the U.S. FDA began reviewing reports of abnormal behavior and other brain effects in more than 1,800 children who had taken Tamiflu.

The drug is being so widely overused that it has now contaminated rivers downstream of sewage-treatment facilities as a result of people excreting it in their urine!

Researchers are quite concerned that birds exposed to these waterborne residues could develop and spread drug-resistant strains of various types of flu, showing that once again the risks of overdoing any type of drug treatment can be steep.

I have to add here, too, that all these risks come with very limited benefits, as Tamiflu can only reduce the duration of your flu symptoms by 1 to 1.5 days, according to official data!

What Else Can We Learn from 1918?

The treatment being offered in 1918, aspirin, may have ended up killing a significant number of people. Aside from Tamiflu, what “treatment” is being offered for the swine flu pandemic today?

The H1N1 vaccine.

Health officials everywhere are now recommending each man, woman and child get as many as four flu shots this season; two doses for the swine flu, and one or two doses for the seasonal flu, depending on whether you’ve ever had a flu shot before.

Is it really prudent to mass-administer an untested swine flu vaccine along with a seasonal flu vaccine that may increase your chances of contracting the swine flu?

Fortunately, the information train is working and we are getting the word out. Nearly two-thirds of 1,500 parents who responded to a Consumer Reports poll said that they'd either wait or refuse the vaccine for their children.

In certain states, however, that “choice” no longer exists. New York, for instance, has recently mandated that all health-care workers be vaccinated against both seasonal and H1N1 flu this year -- or face possible termination. In 1918, whether people died from aspirin overdose, a secondary bacterial infection or some other currently unknown cause, and today during the swine flu “pandemic,” what is required or responsible for the actual infection to take hold is a dysfunctional immune system.

If you are healthy you can have enormous exposure to infectious agents and you simply will NOT get sick. A vaccine is simply not the solution … a healthy immune system is.

There is extreme danger from this flu pandemic in Ukraine right now and you should take especial precautions, wherever you live. Particularly, get a supply of Tamiflu, if possible, and start taking it at the first sign of symptoms (headache, fever, dry cough, aches/pains and extreme fatigue). It works. I have used it myself in the past. This flu operates very fast, often within just 3 - 6 hours, and is very deadly. You will not have time to get Tamiflu once you have symptoms.

The Ukrainian government is coming under increasing criticism in the German media for imposing military rule on the country in response to a pandemic.

The Ukraine yesterday said it would close all schools in the country for a week, and suspend basic rights such as the freedom of movement and assembly.

In addition, some border crossings to Slovakia have been closed.

The latest crackdown comes as the government said a planned election might not be held on schedule because of the pandemic.

The President is expected to declare a state of emergency any day heralding the beginning of rule by presidential decree.

Konstantin Bondarenko, head of an insitute in Kiev, told the Russian newspaper "Trud" that the current wave of sickness was no worse than the usual seasonal flu.

He said that there were political forces that wanted to profit from portraying themselves as saviours of the nation, according to a report in the German news magazine Der Spiegel.

Whatever is causing so much sickness in the Ukraine -- whether it is a pneumonia plague bioweapon intentionally released or another virus, -- it is clear that the government is using the pandemic to undermine democracy in the Ukraine, a country brought to its knees by a corrupt clique of oligarchs in government, who have enriched themselves at the expense of the people and whose grip on power has been shaken by violent protests.

A row has broken out between WHO and Norway after Norway allegedly rejected an offer by the UN global health organisation to send their „experts“ to Norway to deal with the swine flu pandemic.

According to a report in the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, WHO wanted to send „experts“ to Norway after reports that more people had died from the „swine flu“ there than in other countries.

The Assistant Director-General of WHO contacted the Norwegian health director Bjørn Inge Larsen and apparently suggested sending his officials to the country.

However, the Norwegian government declined the offer.

"They offered their assistance. There was talk of sending someone from the WHO here to assist us, " Norwegian Health Minister Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen said.

The news that WHO had offered to send experts to Norway emerged after a letter sent by Strøm-Erichsen to GlaxoSmithKline company concerning the destruction of 170,000 doses of Pandemrix was published.

"Influenza pandemic is now spreading rapidly throughout the country and close to inhabited areas have now been hardest hit. Compared with other European countries, we have a higher death rate, to the extent that the WHO has expressed concern and have contacted our health authorities to provide assistance, "said the letter.

Under the International Health Regulations 2005 and pandemic plans, WHO officials are allowed to assume sweeping powers over a country's health and security infrastructure under the pretext of a pandemic emergency.

The "offer" to send officials by WHO, and the rejection of that offer by Norway could be part of a power struggle for control of Norway.

Soon after the news emerged that WHO had contacted the Norwegian government about sending its officials to the country, the Norwegian government backtracked and denied it had rejected an offer by WHO to send experts.

This is not about control. Norwegian health authorities and WHO are totally on the same side. This is about creating more fear and panic! Chief Physician Bjørn Iversen at the Norwegian Health Institute stated in 2007 that the flu contributes to 1300 deaths yearly ( http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks/article1993754.ece ). The 15 deaths so far, in half a year, which they refer to as a high number, is really then a very low number.

The New York Health Department has decided to change a state law so that more people can receive the H1N1 vaccine more quickly.

Since 2008, the New York State Department of Health has not allowed pregnant women and children under three to be given vaccines with Thimerosal in them. Thimerosal is a mercury containing preservative that keeps bacteria out of the vaccine.

This story seems to be gathering speed with fishy facts coming out daily... Reports of possible pneumonic plague cases, or an "unknown" virulent h1n1 strain.

The government don't know what it is and deny spraying the city with an unknown aerosols, the WHO are in town trying to figure it out, sounds a tad serious. Stories of an interesting spin from an ex-mossad microbiologist also makes interesting reading:

One Flu Over the Ukraine's Nest

What moves me today? It appears that the massive biological pandemic that I have forecast for many years, most recently specifying this Fall (that's right now, folks), has arrived in the break-away Soviet republic of Ukraine over the past week. You say you haven't heard about it yet? You will. There has been no news coverage in the West so far, so near as I can tell, but this story is too big and moving too fast to cover up much longer. I have seen a number of Internet postings on the Ukrainian epidemic and, even, a few UTube videos already. I have heard the story developing since last week from correspondents of mine in Ukraine who have been witnessing things first hand. School and public offices have all been closed. President Yuschenko has declared a state of emergency and issued a plea for international help. Reports of up to 3,000 deaths (unconfirmed) already are leaking out.

So far, the worst of this outbreak is in Western Ukraine, in and around the city of Lviv, but a few hundred kilometers to the East, in the capital city of Kiev, nearly half the people now stalk the streets wearing surgical masks. It would be an understatement to say that the people of Ukraine are moving into full panic mode. I can see why. So should you. I will explain why in a moment.

Ukrainian authorities are unclear that this outbreak is the same as or, even, a close variant of the Swine Flu now sweeping over the planet. Maybe it is just a lethal mutation. Likely not, however. They are calling it both a viral pneumonia and bacteriological hemorrhagic fever. The symptoms mimic those of Swine Flu, though on steroids. People die with their lungs dissolving almost overnight, filled with fluids and blood. This is the exact, same pattern as followed by the 1917 Spanish Flu, which struck down the healthiest among the population, those with the strongest immune systems. The rampup over the summer has been identical to 1917, too.

Here's why you are at special risk if you are young and healthy: Your vital and responsive immune system is the very thing that kills you, by overreacting to the infection via what is called a Cytokeine Storm. I wrote about this process earlier this year, in Flu Happens. A great many of the people now dying have underlying conditions as well, particularly those of a respiratory nature such as asthma, when they take ill.

Now for the particularly interesting and sinister conspiracy twist (you just knew this was coming, didn't you?):

Incidentally, I have forecast in my Internet columns and my book, Defensive Racism, this very scenario, though I have not known where it would begin.

Three months ago, Israeli Mossad agent Joseph Moshe, who specializes in biological warfare, was taken down by Los Angeles police, allegedly for "threatening the White House." What wasn't reported by the media at the time was that Moshe just had "called into a radio show to warn people about a biological weapon that was being made by Baxter international that would be spread through vaccine and would cause a plague upon its release." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/14/man-suspected-of-making-t_n_259330.html Moshe also claimed that Ukraine would be the country in which it first would be released. This was in early August. How did he know?

Three months ago, Moshe stated that this pandemic would begin in Ukraine, a country free of the flu until last week. That is too much for coincidence. Maybe it simply is coincidence, but I do not believe in coincidence. And, suddenly, lots of people are dying in Ukraine from this flu outbreak - a much more deadly form of the flu than has been seen anywhere else.

Baxter Pharmaceuticals has a vaccine development and production lab in Ukraine and in the past has been proven to have shipped dangerous live agents to other countries, notably AIDS in blood products that killed thousands of people a few years ago. This past spring, Czechoslovakia happened to test some Baxter vaccine and found live virus, something about which you may have heard.

Baxter, the source of the flu vaccine now being distributed over there, cannot be trusted! The Ukrainian people are not being told any of this or about what this Moshe character said just prior to being arrested in August over here. I am forwarding this column to all my friends in Ukraine tonight.

There is extreme danger from this flu pandemic in Ukraine right now and you should take especial precautions, wherever you live. Particularly, get a supply of Tamiflu, if possible, and start taking it at the first sign of symptoms (headache, fever, dry cough, aches/pains and extreme fatigue). It works. I have used it myself in the past. This flu operates very fast, often within just 3 - 6 hours, and is very deadly. You will not have time to get Tamiflu once you have symptoms.

I predict that we will see this all over the globe by the end of the month. This could kill a lot of people. A lot, as in millions. Already, you can bank upon this infection being in many other countries, now going through its gestation period. It is infectious before symptoms really manifest. We will know by this time next week.

Hang on, folks. I think this is just the crest. Now comes the plunge downward. Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times.

Government plans to introduce compulsory vaccinations for swine flu could see people JAILED if they refuse to take it.

Stringent pandemic laws open to the Department of Health allow it to enforce compulsory vaccinations against a serious outbreak of swine flu – with stiff fines or a six-month stretch in prison for those who avoid taking the jab.

The Department of Health has said it is satisfied it can enact legislation provided in the 1947 Health Act – which include compulsory vaccinations, quarantine and travel bans – to deal with a pandemic.

A HSE spokeswoman said: “The position is that the Department is satisfied that the provisions in 1947 Health Act for the control and management of infectious diseases, gives it sufficient powers to deal with a pandemic outbreak.”

The Act also states that anyone who wilfully obstructs the execution of a regulation – such as compulsory vaccination – shall be liable for conviction in court.

A source told Star Sunday that the Department of Health is on the verge of making swine flu vaccine compulsory for everybody in the country next month.

The source said: “They are seriously considering making the vaccinations compulsory as it could be the only way to make it work.”
Swine flu is already starting to spread in Ireland with confirmed cases found at three separate schools. A total of 91 people have been hospitalised with the virus.

Pandemic

Pharmacists across Ireland are currently in training so that they can administer the vaccine once the first batches become available.

But the government could be hit with massive compensation claims if those forced to get the vaccination have bad reactions to it.

The Department of Health has said the State will pay any compensation claims against the drug companies supplying the swine flu vaccines to Ireland, including Baxter International, which has previously been associated with two deadly scandals.

The first occurred in the 1980s when haemophiliac components were contaminated with HIV and infected into tens of thousands of people, including children.

The second event occurred more recently in February this year, when Baxter released a seasonal flu vaccine containing bird flu virus, which could have produced a real world pandemic.

How Effective is the H1N1 Vaccine, Really?

"Specific levels of HI antibody titers post-vaccination with inactivated influenza virus vaccine have not been correlated with protection from influenza virus. In some human studies, antibody titers of 1:40 or greater have been associated with protection from influenza illness in up to 50% of subjects."

You will find that paragraph in all the vaccine inserts.

What that paragraph says, is that the vaccine only works in half, or less, of those individuals who attain the specified level of seroconversion after vaccination. The FDA defines seroconversion as achieving an antibody titer of 1:40.

This means that if a vaccine was 100 percent effective at achieving this level of seroconversion, it would protect up to 50 percent of the recipients of the vaccine.

But none of the vaccines are 100 percent effective at achieving seroconversion.

CSL's vaccine insert, for example, (see pages 11-12), states that their H1N1 vaccine provides seroconversion for:

* 48.7 percent of people aged 18-65
* 34 percent for seniors, 65 and older

That means that, at best, their vaccine works in one out of every four people! (49 percent of 50 percent).

Which, of course, means that the vaccine does NOT work in three out of every four people…

Swine Flu

Austria, Hungary and Slovenia have already said they will send disinfectants, vaccines and respirators.

Slovakia has closed two of its five border crossings with Ukraine, against WHO advice, in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading.

Ukrainians have complained of their struggle to access medical supplies, and many pharmacies have sold out of face masks as people try to protect their families from infection.

However, with elections in January there is concern that President Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who are fierce rivals, are making political capital out of the outbreak.

Nov. 5, 2009 - A sick Iowa pet is the latest evidence that cats can carry the H1N1 swine flu virus.

The pandemic flu bug was detected in a sick, 13-year-old Iowa cat after two members of the family that owns the cat fell ill, the Iowa Department of Health reported yesterday.

The cat -- and both humans -- recovered from their illnesses.

"It's not unexpected news ... we know that influenza viruses can be transmitted between humans and animals," CDC spokesman Tom Skinner tells WebMD.

The Iowa cat was taken to the veterinary college at Iowa State University, where tests of a nasal swab confirmed the cat was infected with the H1N1 swine flu virus.

"Just because the virus was found in a sick cat doesn't mean the virus was the cause of the cat's illness," Atlanta veterinarian Megan Hilf, VMD, tells WebMD.

Even so, the CDC warns people with flu-like symptoms to avoid giving the virus to their best friends.

"If people are sick and have pets and they are concerned, then we suggest they follow the same steps we tell them to follow when it comes to preventing spread to other humans: Cover coughs and sneezes, frequently wash your hands, and try to distance yourself from your pet until you have been without fever for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medicine," Skinner says.

Can cats carry H1N1 swine flu and transmit it to people or to other pets? Maybe, says Drew Weigner, DVM, a feline specialist in Atlanta.

"There is currently no evidence that cats can transmit H1N1 to people," Weigner tells WebMD. "While there is currently no evidence that cats can transmit H1N1 to cats or other pets, it would not be surprising to find transmission from one cat to another -- but this is not yet known to have occurred."

Cats do readily become infected with another worrisome flu bug -- the deadly H5N1 bird flu. Fortunately, that killer virus has not become widespread in either cats or humans. And the H5N1 virus is very different from the H1N1 swine flu virus.

In fact, Weigner says, cats rarely get infected with any kind of flu virus.

"What is often referred to as 'cat flu' is actually a syndrome describing an upper respiratory infection with several different viruses such as herpesvirus and calicivirus," he says.

A 2007 study of blood samples collected from 1999 to 2005 from 60 domestic and 51 free-roaming cats in and around Milan, Italy, showed no indication that any of the animals had ever been infected with any flu virus.

But if a cat does get a human flu bug, what symptoms would it have?

"Since only one cat has been confirmed to be infected with H1N1, it remains to be seen how this virus affects cats," Weigner says. "One would expect infected cats to have a fever and upper respiratory symptoms including sneezing and eye or nasal discharge. The most important point is that any cat exhibiting signs of illness should be examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible."

Weigner and Skinner note that other animals have picked up H1N1 swine flu from humans, including pigs, birds, and ferrets. H1N1 swine flu is a human virus not known to be circulating in pigs.

regarding the video, i can see he is a concerned citizen, but he got it a bit wrong on the Ukranian situation. It is all not as bad and this is hapenning right before the elections there. plus, i had confirmations that even Russia is only reporting it as seomthing not as bad as the swine flu in their media today.

SO we will see. in a weeks time we will know if hte death toll wrose as bad as predicted or if it is nothing less than fearmongering fro profit.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City health officials scrambled to explain themselves on Thursday in the wake of media reports about bankers who got scarce H1N1 flu vaccines through their employers.

Members of Congress fired off letters demanding immediate explanations and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminded state and city health officers of the need to make sure the most vulnerable people get shots first.

"I am concerned that the distribution of the vaccine is resulting in favored treatment for the privileged," New Jersey Democratic Representative Frank Pallone said.

A shortage of H1N1 vaccines has frayed nerves, and public health departments across the country say they will not be able to meet the bulk of the demand until December or January.

The CDC estimates swine flu has infected more than five million people and it is documented as having killed 1,000.

The federal government, which is buying the vaccines and distributing them for free to 62 state and city health departments, says 35.6 million doses have been made and packaged since production began.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, a Democrat, released a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saying he was "stunned" at the reports.

"I implore you to use whatever authorities you have to ensure that H1N1 vaccines already distributed but not yet used are promptly redirected to hospitals, schools, community health clinics, school-based health clinics, and pediatricians so that they can be made immediately available to at-risk members of the public as identified by the Department," Dodd wrote.

CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden sent out a reminder to state and city health departments that distribute vaccine.

"I ask each of you to review your plans immediately and work to ensure that the maximum number of doses is delivered to those at greatest risk as rapidly as possible," he wrote.

"I especially appreciate the many innovative ways you've found to reach them, including school-located vaccine clinics, special clinics for pregnant women, outreach to children with special needs, and making vaccine available to community- and faith-based organizations serving these high-risk populations."

Close to 160 million people are in the priority groups to get vaccine first -- healthcare workers, pregnant women, children and adults under 65 with medical conditions, caregivers for infants too young to be vaccinated and people 24 and younger.

"When H1N1 vaccine first became available in the fall, we directed all available doses to pediatricians, OB-GYNs, community health centers, public and private hospitals," New York City health department spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti said in a telephone interview.

"As more vaccine became available we started to place small orders to providers that serve adults, including employee health centers."

She said the city had given 800,000 doses to about 1,100 providers, with Lenox Hill Hospital, for example, getting 1,200 doses and banking firm Goldman Sachs getting 200 of the 5,300 doses it asked for, Scaperotti said.

She said 16 of the city's 25 biggest employers had vaccine, including Columbia University, Citi Group and others, as well as the Federal Reserve Bank, which is not among the top 25 employers.

Morgan Stanley said it received 500 doses of the vaccine for its New York City locations and 500 doses for its Westchester location in suburban New York.

"We never thought we would receive doses ahead of area hospitals and once this was brought to our attention, we promptly donated the doses we received to a few area hospitals," including Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in New York, a company spokeswoman said.

New virus feared as many test negative for H1N1

Mumbai: Is a new flu virus variant in the air which is not H1N1? Too many patients are testing negative for H1N1, and this has become a cause of concern in Maharashtra. While some suspect that suppliers may be providing sub-standard testing medium, there is a serious worry that there is a non-H1N1 virus strain doing the rounds.

An analysis of deaths at Pune's Sassoon Hospital revealed that about 30-35% of the patients who died due to H1N1 influenza showed strong clinical symptoms of the virus, but still tested negative. Even in Mumbai, about 12% of the cases had strong symptoms of swine flu but had tested negative.

Director of major hospitals Sanjay Oak said the BMC had written to the National Institute of Virology about this observation. "Recently, we lost two patients at Nair Hospital who had classic symptoms of swine flu, but tested negative," he said. "It could be some variant of H1N1 but not classic H1N1, and so the tests are showing negative," he said.

Echoing the same concern, Arun Jamkar, dean of BJ Medical College, Pune, said: "We have found that 36 patients who died in Sassoon Hospital had all the classic symptoms of H1N1 and had even responded to Tamiflu, but they tested negative for the virus". He added that there were questions about the modality of collecting and testing the samples.

The testing protocol involves the collection of throat samples and letting them grow on the viral transport medium (VMT). The test could show false results if the medium is faulty. The VMT is a semi-solid agent that is distributed to laboratories by suppliers chosen by the NIV in Pune. Authorities of NIV could not be reached for comment.

Talking to DNA, the joint director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Pravin Shingare, confirmed that the issue was discussed in one of the state's high-level meetings. "Samples can test false negative or positive in many instances," he said.

Explaining the findings, Shingare said the collection of samples was tricky. "Though one's throat region is about 80-90 sq cm, only about 20-30% could be affected by the virus. So there is a high possibility that the swab is collected from an area not affected by the virus," he said. Also, transportation of the samples could be an area of major concern. "If the temperature is not regulated as per the standard protocol, samples can get spoilt and produce wrong results," he said.

Meanwhile, another state official said that the worst fear was that suppliers could be supplying sub-standard medium. "Some suppliers could be supplying routine medium even if they are provided money to provide the medium special for H1N1," the officer said.

Director of Haffkine Research Institute Abhay Chaudhary, however, said that it was quite possible that the virus was not H1N1, but seasonal. "After all, both of them have the same symptoms," he said. He added that of all samples tested in Mumbai for H1N1, as many as 20% tested positive for seasonal flu and about 25% for H1N1.

Doctors at Sassoon Hospital, who are in the thick of the swine flu battle, are a worried lot. Thirty-five patients with swine flu-like symptoms died in the last 45 days at the hospital, and not one of them tested positive for swine flu. The doctors still don't know what caused the death of these patients.

"We requested the National Institute of Virology (NIV) to check tissue samples from these patients for eight to 10combinations of the HN virus subtype like H1N2 or H2N2. It is extremely important that the virus is identified so we can decide on the course of treatment," said Dr Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon Hospital, which has been dubbed as the epicentre of the swine flu activity in the state.

On October 28, doctors at Sassoon shared the data on these deaths with the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, USA, and virologists across the world in a videoconference.

Despite repeated attempts, Dr A C Mishra, director of NIV, remained unavailable for comment. Dr Mandeep Chaddha, deputy director, NIV, said she wasn't authorised to speak to the media.

Impact on vaccine
Dr Pravin Shengare, joint dire-ctor, Directorate of Medical Education and Research, who attended the video-conference, said, "The NIV's report won't have an effect on vaccine production, but it is important to know if another dominant virus sub-type is circulating. If this is the case, a detailed analysis of deaths that occurred due to unexplained symptoms will have to be undertaken," he said.

"If it is found that there is a different strain of the virus, then that strain should ideally be incorporated in the H1N1 vaccine that is being developed by NIV. It is also important to understand how potent that virus is," said
JP Muliyil, senior scientist and epidemiologist at Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Shengare, however, pointed out that the WHO had recommended that a monovalent vaccine against H1N1 be developed. Modifying a vaccine so it provides protection from other viruses would take too much time and effort, he felt. "Even if a new virus sub-type is circulating, the H1N1 vaccine that is being developed won't be useless, as it can still be used to fight swine flu. If there is another virus, we'll have to deal with it separately," said Shengare.

WHO watching China plague cases 'closely'

A spokeswoman for the World Health Organization, Vivian Tan, earlier said an outbreak such as this was always a concern, but praised the Chinese for reacting quickly and for getting the situation under control.

A BBC correspondent in Beijing, Michael Bristow, says that unlike in the past the authorities are being very open about this outbreak.

Local officials in north-western China have told the BBC that the situation is under control, and that schools and offices are open as usual.

But to prevent the plague spreading, the authorities have sealed off Ziketan.

About 10 other people inside the town have so far contracted the disease, according to state media.

No-one is being allowed leave the area, and the authorities are trying to track down people who had contact with the men who died.

Initial symptoms of pneumonic plague include fever, headache and shortness of breath.

The local health bureau has warned anyone with a cough or fever who has visited the town since mid-July to seek medical treatment.

According to the WHO, pneumonic plague is the most virulent and least common form of plague.

It is caused by the same bacteria that occur in bubonic plague - the Black Death that killed an estimated 25 million people in Europe during the Middle Ages.

But while bubonic plague is usually transmitted by flea bites and can be treated with antibiotics, pneumonic plague is easier to contract and if untreated, has a very high case-fatality ratio.

But this time, it didn't start in Mongolia where it originally began before reaching the ports of Europe through trade, but close by, in the Chinese province of Qinghai.

As a result the government quarantined a small town, Ziketan, population 10,000. Three people in Qinghai have succombed to the bubonic plague as the government moved to quarantine the town.

If you're looking at bacteria, you'll notice it's the species called yersinia pestis. Ironically, it's the exact species of bacteria (not a virus) that caused the 14th century bubonic plague that spread across the Silk Road to Europe.

The bacteria also causes pneumonic plague that spreads from person to person just by breathing or coughing, whether the person covers the cough or not. Just by exhaling from your nostrils, you can pass the bacteria, if you are infected with it, from one person to another in any crowded, enclosed space such as a bus, train, theater, or store.

The pneumonic plague doesn't need rats or fleas beause it's spread from person to person through the breath. However, it is not the threat to humans from fleas as it was historically. What it actually does is get into your lungs.

Then you transmit the organism to another person by coughing, sneezing, or breathing. Another way to catch it is by talking to someone while you're preparing food.

The tiny, unseen droplets of spittle spray the food without you realizing that it's happening as you speak to the person next to you. Then someone eats the food, and the bacteria can get into the bloodstream if it's not destroyed by strong acids in the stomach. It's also spread by laughing next to someone, if you're infected.

After the bacteria gets into your lungs, it's transmitted by coughing or other breath motion to others around you. If fleas get infected, although you don't need fleas, they will bite humans. They don't need rats. The bacteria gets into your bloodstream. That's how bubonic plague becomes spread as human-to-human pneumonic plague.

It's not a virus like the flu or a cold. It's a bacteria. Pneumonic plague spread from human to human is much more contagious than bubonic plague that's spread from fleas on animals such as rats to humans. With pneumonic plague, your house can be clean of fleas or rats, but you catch the disease from another person directly.

As the bacteria of pneumonic plague gets into the blood stream, it hooks onto the lungs and replicates. You catch it by inhaling bacteria in an aerosol environment, for example, somebody else's exhaled breath, especially in a close and crowded environment.

Is it surgical mask time? And will quarantining the province of Qinghai really prevent people from breathing near one another or on objects that get sent through the mail or exported as food products?

According to an August 6, 2009 article, "Borders tight to control plague," by Cui Xiaohuo (China Daily), the newspaper reported, "Fearing pneumonic plague spreading across the Sino-Russian border, Russia has tightened security on part of its border with China after an outbreak in Qinghai province."

Local residents also told the Associated Press that "many immigrants from other provinces have already left after they heard that another person died of the plague. A local food seller, surnamed Han, said the residents escaped with food, water and their donkeys."

It's easier to contract than bubonic plague, which requires that a person or animal has to be bitten by an infected flea. HHS Purchases Additional H1N1 Vaccine Ingredients

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that the department will commit $884 million to purchase additional supplies of two key ingredients for potential H1N1 vaccine to further prepare the nation for a potential resurgence of the 2009 H1N1 virus.

“We recognize that preparedness is shared responsibility between federal, tribal, state, local governments, private organizations and individuals. We are doing our part to be as prepared as possible for the impact that this infectious disease could have on our country,” Secretary Sebelius said. “Vaccines may serve an important role in that preparedness. The action we are taking today will provide flexibility in a future immunization program, if a program is recommended.”

The funds will be used to place additional orders for bulk H1N1 antigen and adjuvant on existing contracts with Sanofi Pasteur, MedImmune, GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis. The vaccine ingredients will become a part of the pandemic stockpile, for use if a vaccination campaign is necessary.

Antigen is the active ingredient in a vaccine that causes the human body’s immune system to develop antibodies that help fight an invading virus. Depending on the results of clinical studies, adjuvant could be added to a vaccine to boost the immune system’s response and potentially reduce the amount of antigen necessary for the body to recognize and fight a virus.

In May, Secretary Sebelius directed approximately $1 billion to be used for the development of a vaccine and for clinical studies to determine dose level and assess the safety and effectiveness of potential vaccines.

The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response established the existing contracts with these companies in 2004 as part of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza.

Secret document: Belarusians die from pneumonia complicated by swine flu

Medical workers report to the Health Care Ministry that, about ten people have died in Minsk from pneumonia, a A(H1N1) flu complication.

Journalists managed to get a medical report saying the cause of death of two persons of 27 and 36 years old (they died on the same day) was pneumonia. RNA of A(H1N1) flu were detected in their tissue samples.

The 27-year old man had a high temperature and went to a local polyclinic, was treated at home, but after some days taken to hospital #6, where he died on October 26.

According to a source of “Belorusskie Novosti”, it is mostly young people who die from the A(H1N1) virus in Belarus.

The difficulty is that a death certificate is only the first step to prove the cause of death was the virus. According to the source, it give the officials an opportunity to sit on their hands and speak about the mixed infection, etc. Post-mortem and histologic examinations are needed to confirm the death was caused by the A(H1N1) virus. Medical officials can state the flu is just a background disease, but not a ground for the complications, and will be right formally.

For the moment, the medical worker has information about ten confirmed death cases of A(H1N1) flu. He states: “The pneumonia, we are speaking about, is a complication of A(H1N1) flu, it is not a bacterial pneumonia. A sick person chokes and can’t breathe. He prescribed artificial ventilation, but dies. This takes three or four days.”

The source notes a fast growth of pneumonia cases in Belarus and in Minsk. He states that the number of fatal cases exceeds the normal statistics for this period of year. There are many patients with pneumonia in intensive therapy units. He can’t say whether all of them are checked for the A(H1N1) virus
The physician’s statement can’t be proven officially. According to some reports, medical workers are not permitted to say any information about the current situation with the A(H1N1) virus. Requests to the Health Care Ministry remain unreplied. The ministry representatives deny death cases of swine flu or refuse to give any comments in order to prevent panic. Officials never think it is impossible to hide the truth for long, it will leak and gather rumours and make even greater panic.

Attempts of the authorities to hush up the situation are short-sighted, the physician said. The current situation needs not reports saying it is under control, but urgent measures.

He gives an example of behaviour of the Ukrainian government: “The country has asked for help and received it. 600,000 doses of Tamiflu, bought by the Ukrainian government, had already been delivered. In accordance with medical norms, this is enough to supply all regions of Ukraine and make reserves.”

The medical worker emphases that Belarus becomes a proving ground where the virus is tested in natural condition, when preventive measures are insufficient and treatment is minimal: “The duty of the health system is to buy the necessary medicines beforehand and be able to forecast keen demand. At least, sufficient number of protective masks must have been purchased. It finds out that our medical system is not effective to fight the epidemic. The officials continue to state the virus is raging in Ukraine and Russia, but not in Belarus. “

The physician emphasized: the Belarusian medical workers are not allowed to give information to the public (that’s why the source wants to stay unanimous). A complete crock of shit imho, If the constant streaming footage of 9/11 didn't crash the internet then nothing will. Everyone and his dog wanted to see the towers fall and watch it at home on the net. There is in my opinion nothing that will come close to the internet or phone congestion as 9/11 did.

Its things like this that put the idea in peoples heads that the internet is causing an annoyance to the emergency services or some other lame excuse to stop the freedom of the net.

A note on the website of the French embassy in the Ukraine appears to support reports from doctors in the region that people there have died from the pneumonic plague.

The confirmation that people have contracted "acute respiratory infections" will fuel fears that pneumonic plague bacteria have been released to infect people and so give the appearance of a deadly swine flu pandemic as some observers have claimed.

The deadly swine flu pandemic is then being used, in turn, to justify martial law by the Ukrainian authorities.

The French embassy website states:

"According to the information available, the epidemic combines the regular flu, the

virus of influenza (the virus H1/N1 having been identified) and an acute

respiratory infections..... whose exact nature has not yet been established, and which would be responsible for the majority of deaths."

The government overreacted to an outbreak of the swine flu in Ukraine to give competitive advantage to Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the next presidential election, a Tymoshenko rival charged Monday.

The panic triggered by the government’s decision to declare the outbreak a major threat, has served to overshadow recent scandals involving Tymoshenko loyalists, Arseniy Yatseniuk, the No. 3 most popular presidential candidate, said.

“This is in fact part of the political campaign,” Yatseniuk said in an interview with ICTV. “The main thing is to get the presidential office. All efforts and resources have been thrown for this.”

At least 71 people, in western regions of Ukraine, were killed by the swine flu over the past three weeks, but the death toll figure has been apparently hovering around levels usually caused by seasonal flu.

Oleksandr Bilovol, a deputy healthcare minister, said Monday the outbreak has been essentially contained in 11 out of 25 Ukrainian regions, with the number of people only 15% exceeding figures reported in previous years.

“Figures in other the regions are in line with 2007 and 2008,” Bilovol said.

The Tymoshenko government on Friday declared the outbreak as the threat of the third level – the highest possible – to unlock spending of up to 3 billion hryvnias to combat the swine flu.

Other measures included shutting down schools and public gatherings for three weeks across Ukraine, with the government also considering introducing restrictions on movement of people between the regions.

The measures, some of the sternest in the world, come in sharp contrast with other Eastern European countries that face similar challenges, analysts said.

Margaret Chan, the director general of the World Health Organization, which tracks the swine flu internationally, sees the pandemic as “moderate” in severity with the overwhelming majority of patients experiencing only mild symptoms and a full recovery, often in the absence of any medical treatment.

Yatseniuk said the ban on public gatherings spreads fear and panic helping Tymoshenko to promote herself on television, while hindering other presidential candidates to campaign.

Yatseniuk is Tymoshenko’s biggest rival as both compete for votes in western regions of Ukraine. He is perhaps the only candidate that may challenge Tymoshenko in the first round of vote on January 17, 2010 to enter the runoff with opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych.

Yatseniuk’s rating has been showing negative growth over the past several months, suggesting that Tymoshenko has been winning over voters in the western regions.

“Why did the outbreak take place in four western regions? Because there are four battleground regions for the electorate,” Yatseniuk said.

He said the panic spread by the government helps to put aside issues that are politically damaging to Tymoshenko, including the pedophile and the murder scandals involving Tymoshenko lawmakers, and Ukraine’s dismal economic performance caused by mismanagement.

“Now, look what happened,” Yatseniuk said. “Does anybody talk about the pedophile scandal? No. Maybe somebody talks about Lozynskiy [a Tymoshenko lawmaker accused of shooting a person to death]? No. Maybe somebody talks about wages? No. Maybe somebody talks about four million unemployed? No. Maybe somebody talks about unpaid natural gas bills? No.”

“People that are in fear, that are poor, are easier to be manipulated,” Yatseniuk said. “This is what the state apparatus is aimed at – manipulating the people.”

International Bioterrorism Tabletop Exercise


In September 2009, senior law enforcement officials, health care professionals and experts from international organizations joined their forces to confront a chilling crisis – the plague had just been unleashed on their countries by unknown evildoers.

A fictional scenario with a serious aim

Fortunately, this terrifying situation was a scenario under control, and the civilian authorities were all participants in a Tabletop Exercise on Preventing Bioterrorism hosted by INTERPOL. This exercise simulated a global bioterrorism attack and its aftermath. Participants in the Black Death scenario were faced with a fictional, intentional plague attack involving countries from their region, with the exercise designed to assist them in identifying critical co-operation and co-ordination issues which could hinder a quick and successful response to such an attack in real life.

The idea behind this exercise, the third in a series organized by INTERPOL, has been described by the Organization's Secretary General, Ronald K. Noble, as “helping focus our joint understanding of the role and responsibility of each of us – police, health care professionals, experts – in response to a bioterrorism incident, as well as identifying possible gaps or redundancies so that we can draw lessons from them.”

Inter-agency co-operation in Central and Eastern Europe

Organized by the INTERPOL Bioterrorism Unit, this third edition of the event took place from 29-30 September in Warsaw, Poland. Participants in the workshop numbered 27 from six Central and Eastern European countries (Belarus, Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine), as well as 15 participants from international organizations such as Europol, the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Control, the European Commission (Directorate General for Health and Consumer Affairs and Directorate General for Justice, Freedom and Security), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

A wide range of INTERPOL initiatives

The tabletop exercise is the latest in a series of initiatives launched by INTERPOL since the creation of its Bioterrorism Prevention programme. INTERPOL has worked ceaselessly since 2005 to heighten its member countries’ awareness of the dangers of bioterrorism and to enhance their preparedness for a bioterrorist attack. The Bioterrorism Prevention Programme has co-ordinated a series of events, starting with the Global Conference on Preventing Bioterrorism in March 2005 (link); regional workshops (link) in Africa, South America, Europe and Asia; train-the-trainer sessions all over the world; and practical tabletop exercises such as the one outlined above.

The facts, that during recent "terror attacks" like 9.11. The bioterrorism threat: strengthening law enforcement

Why is bioterrorism such a threat?

The world is largely unaware of, and therefore largely unprepared for, bioterrorist attacks. Bio-weapons threaten thousands of casualties in addition to other disastrous long term consequences. Criminal networks can covertly transport lethal agents across borders and terrorists have already proven that anthrax can be fatally deployed.

Bio-technology is undergoing rapid evolution. This process, and the wide dissemination of developments, is already proving difficult to manage. There is evidence that terrorist organizations have a heightened interest in the use of biological weapons, establishing terrorist support cells in different regions around the world with the ability and motivation to carry out attacks.

An easy option?

An effective biological weapon is potentially devastating and much easier to make and transport than a nuclear weapon. Bio-weapons are, however, relatively safe for the terrorist. Pathogens (biological agents or germs) are virtually undetectable and can be brought reasonably easily into a country by an individual and can then be propagated in large quantities.

Recognising the imminent dangers represented by this lethal form of crime is the first step in countering the threat. Thereafter it is vital to put in place the tools which will enable society to take appropriate measures.

Isn't there a law against it?

In many countries, criminal justice systems are constrained by inadequate legal frameworks governing the detection and repression of bio-weapons. Frequently, no law is violated until the disease or biological agent is actually deployed. Law enforcement officers are therefore unable to begin preliminary investigations into the development of such weapons. Without laws which criminalise activity relating to bio-weapons, there is no basis for legal assistance or co-operation to prevent their production and transport.

There is therefore an urgent need to ensure that countries are adequately prepared for, protected from, and able to respond to bioterrorism attacks. Law enforcement agencies have a crucial role to play, with significant support from, and in collaboration with a range of other national and international bodies.

What has been done?

As a direct result of a grant of nearly one million dollars from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Secretary General Ronald K. Noble has been able to create a dedicated unit at the Interpol General Secretariat in Lyon, France. This unit has developed a programme to build national and international capacity to counter the threat of bioterrorism. (Read media release)

* promote the development of new legislation

i have been told i am under protection from an undisclosed unit of an anonymous government

i have also made a suggestion, as i live in a large house, that the two free rooms cd b occupied by up to 10 people, as the ppl in this house are fairly hostile towards me, as explained, and therefore if i was abducted in the night no one here would know about it and therefore the alarm wouldnt be raised. 4 or 5 truth-seekers in the same house would therefore provide me with considerable protection.

as to the thought that they can pul the internet and for us it being a sign of imminent action, i think that they are in disadvantage of pulling that plug, mainly because if the way they monitor us is via our e-mails, then they will loose track of where we are and what are we doing.
i supposed, for them to disconnect the internet is better when they have martial law installed and the trAINS READY TO TAKE THE PEOPLE FROM THEIR LISTS AWAY. then in a period of a few days they can catch us to send to their concetration camps..

I am not sure these things are going to happen at the same time all over. that wouod be impossible. by HAARPing the poorer continents and sending floods or draughts and trigerring earthquakes and tsunamis they can easily wipe out any population. martial law might not work for them because some military have been waking up and are creating militias in the USA to fight their own government to defend their people from tyranny, which happens to be coming from their own government, and this after they have been to Iraq and Afghanistan. In Ukraine, the pneumonic plague is not fictional, although officials in that country insist the disease is a mutated version of the H1N1 virus, not pneumonic plague. Over the period of six days, the mystery disease has afflicted more than 500,000 people. The plague or virus in the Ukraine has 10 times the mortality rate than the normal swine flu. In late October, officials in Ivano-Frankivsk, a city located in southwestern Ukraine, characterized
the outbreak as pneumonic plague. Pneumonic plague is caused by bacterium and is more virulent and less common than bubonic plague.
Official Ukranian sources place the number of death at 33 (as of November 5) and the news website ZIK claims a total of 97 deaths. Deutsche Presse-Agentur put the number at 95 and reported on November 5 that 633,877 Ukrainians nationwide have registered with health authorities as suffering from the flu. Doctors in the region, however, dispute this and say thousands have died.

US plane forced to land in Mumbai, crew questioned

Mumbai: A Russian cargo aircraft AN-124, which was hired by the US military, triggered panic at the Mumbai airport on Friday night. The plane carrying arms, ammunition and five people onboard was asked to land at the airport after it violated the Indian airspace.

The aircraft took off from Diego Garcia Island – a US military base near Mauritius in the Indian Ocean – and was heading for Kandahar in Afghanistan.

But it entered the Indian airspace at around 2200 hrs IST without having Air Traffic Control permission. The aircraft was forced to land at the Mumbai airport at 2240 hrs IST.

The AN-124 aircraft is used by military to haul cargo and is owned by a Ukraine-based logistics and cargo company. On landing, the Russian crew of the aircraft was immediately taken for questioning by officials of the central investigative agencies and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The questioning of the aircraft crew is on to ascertain the reasons of the airspace violation which swung the security apparatus into emergency mode on Friday night.

PAST CASES

* May 2009 - A B-52 bomber aircraft belonging to the United States violated Pakistan's airspace over the North Waziristan region.

* May 2009 - Authorities in Finland suspected a Swedish military aeroplane of violating its airspace over Lapland.

* April 2009 - The White House was evacuated and locked up after a small single engine plane flew into restricted airspace over the US's Capitol Hill. Interrogations revealed the pilot was experiencing technical problems.

* December 2008 - Shortly after Mumbai terror attacks, Islamabad accused India of violating its airspace. Emergency was declared at all its airbases but later President Zardari dismissed the violation saying the media had hyped the incident.
