The 400-foot design was discovered in a barley field in Yatesbury near Devizes and depicts the mythical phoenix reborn as it rises from the ashes.

Investigators claim more formations are referencing the possibility of a cataclysmic event occurring on December 21, 2012, which coincides with the end of the ancient Mayan calendar.

Crop circle enthusiast Karen Alexander, from Gosport, Hants, said: "The phoenix is a mythical creature which symbolises rebirth and a new era in many cultures across the world.

"Within the crop circle community many believe the designs are constantly referring to December 21 and its aftermath.

"This could be interpreted as the human race or earth rising again after a monumental event.

"The patterns are becoming more intricate with every find and it is exciting to think how they are going to evolve by the time we get to 2012."

Recent crop circles have included giant jelly-fish and one image discovered in Wiltshire in June which experts dubbed the most 'mind boggling' they had ever come across.

The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.

My crop circle eye says that this one is man made.

So do I, and the Jelly fish and dragon fly.

It's very clever though.

Does anyone know if there are reports of people being caught making crop circles in the middle of the night?

this crop circle man made have you been there, the floor of it still crunchs as if it hasnt even been broken, the contor of the ground this thing is impossible to see if you even drive past it. and you must have incredibly small bored to do the gaps of the wings, impossible to walk in them as there 2 small gap. edges are curved perfectly, and everything is perfectly interwoven.

jelly fish is 2 football pitchs long!!!

2 do this it would take longeer than 6 hours plus you have to have car as you will have to walk to get to the spot on top off a hill if you dont, so energy will already be drained and then you have to make crop circle of 2 football pitchs long in perfect symmetry, no chance in going back and checking it, plus you will need a plane to see if you got it correct and you have to get out of there with out disrupting pattern and shape and for you not to be spotted by farmer at 6:00am is impossible someone would of had to monitor farmers working times. and reasearchers are there 24/7

Jellyfish and Phoenix aren't man made. Too complex.

Most of the man made circles are fairly evident after a little bit of examination.

What I'd like to know is why they labeled the phoenix as a symbol of the end of the world.

Most people view that as Armageddon/Apocalypse/Doomsday.

I'm much more in line with this lady's thinking:

Crop circle enthusiast Karen Alexander, from Gosport, Hants, said: "The phoenix is a mythical creature which symbolises rebirth and a new era in many cultures across the world.

"Within the crop circle community many believe the designs are constantly referring to December 21 and its aftermath.

This falls into line with the idea that a global fiat economic collapse would be "the end of the world". It would be the end of government as we know it, and our world would be forced to change. I'm not kidding myself that it would be a traumatic event for many though - which is why I tell people to get prepared now for it. People need to become self-reliant and self-sustaining, and fast.
