Cheap, Safe Drug Kills Most Cancers
Wanderings (http://www.wanderings.net/notebook/Main/CheapSafeDrugKillsMostCancers)

The drug dichloroacetate (DCA) appears to target cancer cells, causing them to die. It's potency as a cancer killing agent has been tested in tissue cultures and, just recently, in mice -- all with very promising results.

Problem is, this drug has been used for many years to treat rare metabolic disorders and is not patentable as a cancer treatment. Without patent protection, the pharmaceutical industry has no interest in investing millions in clinical trials, even though the drug's impact on cancer could be profound.

To understand how DCA works you must first understand that cancer cells often don't create the energy they need via normal channels. In a healthy cell, energy is mostly produced by mitochondria. In cancer cells, the mitochondria seem to shut down. In its place, cancer cells use an inefficient, cell-wide energy producing process called glycolysis--the same process that produces lactic acid and causes your muscles to cramp.

The DCA drug appears to turn on the mitochondria that were turned off by the cancer. Oddly enough, turning on the mitochondria kills the cancer cells. Scientist has shown this in cell cultures and recently in tumors in rats.

This drug could be an important treatment for cancer. However, in order to know if the drug is effective on cancer in humans, clinical trials need to be run. Since the drug is not patentable and can be produced very cheaply, pharmaceutical companies won't fund those clinical trials. The money will have to come from other sources: Government, charities, research foundations.

"Cure" for cancer is never claimed or researched (yet), and costs for trials are way off. I think this guy is making some really good points.

Call to cut magnetic field exposure in home
Anna Salleh
ABC Science Online
Friday, 27 July 2007

Australian authorities will advise the public on how to reduce their exposure to electromagnetic fields from common household appliances like fridges and clock radios, in line with precautionary moves internationally.

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) says this is part of wide-ranging advice designed to limit exposure to extremely low-frequency (ELF) fields.

But some say Australia should go further, pointing to some countries that have set targets to reduce such exposure.

http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/img/health/fridge250707.jpg
One suggestion is to check the strength of the magnetic field near your fridge (Image: iStockphoto)

While there is no absolute proof that such fields cause disease, there have been some puzzling links.

Most important is a link between ELF fields from powerlines and childhood leukaemia, which has persisted for some time. But scientists still don't know how such fields could cause ill health.

This month a UK government inquiry recommended a moratorium on building new homes and schools within 60 metres of existing high-voltage overhead powerlines.

The inquiry also called on the government to consider ELF field exposure when planning new homes and schools.

ARPANSA says it is taking a precautionary approach with its new recommendations.

"I think there will be a recommendation to reduce exposure where it can be done easily at low cost, no cost," says the agency's Dr Lindsay Martin.

ARPANSA plans to give people information on what they can do around the home to reduce their exposure from appliances and electricity meter boxes.

He says the agency will also increase the number of special meters for the public to hire and check their household exposure.

"From most household appliances [fields] drop away quite quickly but from long runs of wiring they don't drop off so quickly and from street wiring they drop off even less quickly," says Martin.

http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/img/health/powerlines250707.jpg
Persistent links between powerlines and childhoold leukaemia have spurred the precautionary moves (Image: iStockphoto)

He says the most common highest everyday exposure is around 300 milligauss, say right next to the microwave oven.

But ARPANSA's exposure limit, expected to be 3000 milligaus, will be based on the proven health effects of much stronger ELF fields, says Martin, and the agency will not set lower precautionary limits.

This is a position supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), which last month issued a report on the health effects of ELF fields.

In the report Extremely low frequency fields, it argues against low "arbitrary" exposure levels in the name of precaution.

Yet some countries have already set precautionary targets to reduce exposure to everyday ELF fields.

According to John Lincoln, ARPANSA's community representative helping to develop Australia's new exposure recommendations, Switzerland and Italy have both set targets to reduce public ELF field exposure to 10 milligauss.

"Imagine a country like Switzerland with all their electric railways. It's quite a problem. But they've actually looked at rewiring the overheads to reduce the fields," says Lincoln, an electrical engineer who measures fields in homes and workplaces.

"I don't know why we can't match what Switzerland is doing. It would be easier in Australia than it would be in Switzerland."

Lincoln says the Netherlands is also constructing a 25 kilometre high-voltage powerline that will only emit 4 milligauss on the ground, whereas such lines normally emit anything up to 120 milligauss.

WHO recommends further research

The WHO report also recommends further research on sources of exposure to low-level fields and their link to conditions including some cancers, depression, suicide, reproductive problems, developmental disorders, immunological changes and neurological disease.

But it says the evidence linking fields to cardiovascular disease or breast cancer is "sufficient to give confidence that magnetic fields do not cause the disease".

Here a link to a recent experiment where light goes through a device so fast, it appears to move backward.

Takes a few to load the animation, but the graphic is worth seeing.

http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=2544

It seems to suggest that the leading edge of a wave contains all the information of the full wave behind it----making it appear to travel faster than c itself.

Would be interesting to speculate on what this discovery may mean to understanding Dual Slit experiments and/or the phenomenon of gravitational lensing.

Also makes you wonder about the possible quantization of starlight and redshifts.

Fascinating.

This story leaves me incredulous and agog as much of the theories behind quantum mechanics do. I am about as confused as the dog Brian Greene is trying to teach physics to in the Elegant Universe. (now slinking off with tail tucked and whimpering into the corner) There is something above our three dimensional existence that we just cannot seem to grasp.

Galaxys spin backwards also

I think some spin forwards and some spin backwards (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd say that it's more the illusion of going backwards, though. So the analogy goes, spiral arms are more like traffic jams than actual... flailing arms. Stars orbit the galactic center, moving faster in the less-dense "arm-less" areas of the galactic disk and moving slower in the more-dense "arms," all the while orbiting the galactic center not in a clear circular orbit like Earth around the Sun but bobbing up and down through the disk.

Looking down from a helicopter, you can see cars (stars) on a highway moving a certain direction but the actual traffic jam (spiral arms) moves backward as the cars in front breach the jam and speed up while cars in the back slow down in entering the jam.

This is quite interesting for several reasons. It appears that there are some similarities between what goes on within semiconductor material and what is going on with the particular fiber optics in this experiment. In materials like silicone or germanium, once doped with impurities such as arsenic or gallium they become semiconductors. In this instance the glass is doped with erbium and the resulting effect on light seems rather strange.

I would be curious to see how long of a fiber optic of this type would result in a failure of the experiment. To exaggerate, I don't think that a fiber optic equal in length to the distance from New York to Los Angeles would produce the same result with the pulse coming out the other end before the incoming pulse entered the fiber. Also, I would like to know at what distance in front of the fiber optic the pulse is as the other pulse appears..

An optical fiber consists of a cylindrical inner core that carries the light and an outer concentric shell called the "cladding". The core is made from a higher refraction of index material than is the cladding. Light sent down the fiber travels a zig-zag path with total internal relfection since the incident angle is greater than the critical angle.

When light travels through a material with a smaller refractive index toward a material with a larger refractive index (air to gasoline), reflection at the boundary occurs along with a phase change in the wave equal to 1/2 of a wavelength. When light travels from a larger to a smaller refractive index, there is no phase change upon reflection at the boundary.

It seems possible that the refractive index of the optic material in optical fiber's core in the experiment has become variable and can change based on the particular distance the pulse is from the material. In this respect it also acts like it has some capacitive qualities with some apparent moving dielectric-like characteristic moving ahead of the pulse. It is as if a second source of light appears at the opposite boundary and flashes in phase, sending waves that split from the source and move in all directions like a light bulb.

Boyd may have invented a new type of semiconductor. Only it is not electricity that is being manipulated here. Light pulses are.

Light's Most Exotic Trick Yet: So
Fast it Goes ... Backwards? (http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=2544)"It's weird stuff," says Boyd. "We sent a pulse through an optical fiber, and before its peak even entered the fiber, it was exiting the other end. Through experiments we were able to see that the pulse inside the fiber was actually moving backward, linking the input and output pulses."

So, wouldn't Einstein shake a finger at all these strange goings-on? After all, this seems to violate Einstein's sacred tenet that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.

"Einstein said information can't travel faster than light, and in this case, as with all fast-light experiments, no information is truly moving faster than light," says Boyd. "The pulse of light is shaped like a hump with a peak and long leading and trailing edges. The leading edge carries with it all the information about the pulse and enters the fiber first. By the time the peak enters the fiber, the leading edge is already well ahead, exiting. From the information in that leading edge, the fiber essentially 'reconstructs' the pulse at the far end, sending one version out the fiber, and another backward toward the beginning of the fiber."

Boyd is already working on ways to see what will happen if he can design a pulse without a leading edge. Einstein says the entire faster-than-light and reverse-light phenomena will disappear. Boyd is eager to put Einstein to the test.

So How Does Light Go Backwards?

Shiva the destroyer helped to save the world from the excesses of the demons of the three cities. After the gods finally conquered the demons, the three sons of the vanquished demon king asked Bhrama for a gift. After first being refused immortality they asked to create 3 cities of gold silver and bronze , one in each of the three worlds of heaven, sky and earth. The king of the gold city then asked for another gift. He asked for, and was given a bathing lake which healed the wounded and made them more powerful. It even brought the dead back from life. Inevitably the demons got completely out of control and had to be stopped. Shiva the destroyer, with Bhrama as his charioteer destroyed the three demon cities with a burning arrow.

Tripura (mythology)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripura_(mythology))

Tripura (meaning three cities, in Sanskrit) was constructed by the great architect Mayasura. They were great cities of prosperity, power and dominance over the world, but due to their impious nature, Maya's cities were destroyed by Lord Shiva. The three cities were made of iron, silver and gold and were located on earth, in the sky and in heaven, respectively.

[edit] History of Tripura

[edit] Penances of the sons of Taraka
Following the death of Taraka, who was killed by Kartikeya, his sons Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali and Kamalaksha undertook severe penances by which they pleased Lord Brahma. They requested that they be blessed with impregnable fortresses, which would be everlasting. However, as Brahma told them that nothing could be everlasting, they requested that the destruction of the cities could be brought about by a single arrow only, on the hope that it was impossible for anyone to shoot such an arrow, save Lord Shiva, of whom they were great devotees. Brahma then blessed them that such fortresses would be constructed by the architect Maya.

[edit] The construction of the three cities
The three cities which comprised Tripura were distributed thus:

The lowest, with walls of Iron, located on earth,
The second, with walls of silver, located in the sky, and
The third, with walls of gold, located in heaven.
The three cities were mobile and moved in such a way that they would never be in a single line, save for a few moments in around a thousand years, when the nakshatra Pushya would be in conjunction with the moon. They were thus reassured that they were quite safe, as it would be an extremely difficult task to destroy the three cities, which aligned only momentarily, by a single arrow!

Asuras from everywhere began to flock to Tripura to live. The cities were extremely luxurious and prosperous.

[edit] Forebodings of the fall of Tripura
After several years of joy, the inherent evil tendencies of the Asuras surfaced once again and they began to oppress the good and torment the noble. In the meantime, Mayasura was engaged in the worship of Shiva. The rest of the demons attacked sages and the Devas and shattered the peace of the worlds. Finally, when Indra and the rest of the Devas despondently approached Lord Brahma for respite, Lord Brahma redirected them to Shiva and also informed them of the vulnerability of Tripura to a single arrow. Lord Shiva promised to help them and the Devas returned to combat the Asuras in a mighty war. They were also assisted by Nandi, the leader of Lord Shiva's Ganas. Even though Vidyunmali was slain by Nandi, and several other asuras were killed in the war, they were revived by water in the pool of Tripura, which had magical powers.

[edit] Lord hari descends to help
As the furious war continued between the Asuras and the Devas, even the Earth began to slip from its place. Just as Lord Brahma and lord shiva were worrying about the earth's descent, the Protector, Lord Vishnu, in the form of a massive bull, lifted the earth and restored it to its original place. He then entered Tripura and drank dry, the pool of magic water that rejuvenated the dead Asuras.

[edit] The destruction of Tripura
As the war raged on, Devas continued to struggle to match the Asuras, who used their magical powers to great effect in the war. Even though the Asuras were anticipating victory, Maya knew that Lord Shiva would enter the war on that day. It was also the day on which the three cities would align momentarily. As battle progressed on the day, Shiva arrived. Vidyunmali approached Shiva but was intercepted and killed by Nandi. Just as the cities aligned for a moment, when the Pushya nakshatra positioned appropriately, Lord Shiva strung his mighty bow, the Pinaka with a powerful arrow and shot at the cities.

[edit] Mayasura Protected
Lord Shiva immediately regretted his act, since he had forgotten to protect Maya, a great devotee of his. Realising this, Nandi raced ahead of the arrow and informed Maya of the impending doom. Instantly, Maya fled Tripura, leaving behind the great city he had constructed, which was immediately reduced to ashes, along with its inhabitants, the Asuras, by the great arrow of Lord Shiva. This destruction of Tripura, led to the appellation Tripurantaka (त्रिपुरान्तक), for Lord Shiva.

Mayasura
Mayasura - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Hindu mythology, Maya (मय), or Mayasura (मयासुर) was a great ancient king of the Asura, Daitya and Rakshasa races upon earth. He was also the chief architect of the peoples of the netherworlds.

Tripura
He was the designer and king of the three flying cities, known as the Tripura. They were great cities of prosperity, power and dominance over the world, but due to their impious nature, Maya's cities were torched out of the sky by Lord Shiva. However, Maya escapes the destruction, as he is a devotee of Lord Shiva.

[edit] In the Ramayana
Maya is the father of Mandodari, the beautiful wife of Ravana, the emperor of Lanka.

Maya is also regarded as a hero and father-figure for many rakshasa, asura, and daitya heroes in Hindu epics.

[edit] In the Mahabharata
When his life is spared by Krishna and Arjuna during the destruction of the Khandava forest, Maya offers his services to them. Krishna instructs Maya to construct a fabulous palace hall for Arjuna's brother, king Yudhisthira, at Indraprastha, which becomes the Mayasabha, renowned, beautiful and the largest of its kind.

Drona
Read about Drona atDrona - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaor the Urday website (also: Urday: Drona and Ekalavya).

DRONA. [Source: Dowson's Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology] `A bucket.' A Brahman (http://mythfolklore.net/india/encyclopedia/brahman.htm) so named from his having been generated by his father, Bharadwaja, in a bucket.

He married Kripa, half-sister of Bhishma, and by her was father of Aswatthaman. He was acharya, or teacher of the military art, both to the Kaurava and Pandava princes, and so he was called Dronacharya.

He had been slighted by Drupada, king of Panchala, and became his enemy. Through the instrumentality of the Pandavas he made Drupada prisoner, and took from him half of his kingdom; but he spared his life and gave him back the other half of his country. But the old animosity rankled, and ended in the death of both.

In the Great War Drona sided with the Kauravas, and after the death of Bhishma he became their commander-in-chief. On the fourth day of his command he killed Drupada, and in his turn he was unfairly slain in combat by Dhrishtadyumna, who had sworn to avenge his father's death.

In the midst of this combat Drona was told that his son was dead, which so unnerved him that he laid down his arms and his opponent decapitated him. But Drona was a Brahman and an Acharya, and the crime of killing him was enormous, so it is glossed over by the statement that Drona "transported himself to heaven in a glittering state like the sun, and Dhrishtadyumna decapitated merely his lifeless body."

Drona was also called Kutaja. The common meaning of Kuta is `mountain-top,' but one of its many other meanings is `water-jar.' His patronymic is Bharadwaja.

ACHARYA. [Source: Dowson's Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology] A spiritual teacher or guide. A title of Drona, the teacher of the pandavas.

Bharadvaja (http://mythfolklore.net/india/encyclopedia/bharadwaja.htm)
Read about Bharadwaja at Wikipedia or the Urday website.

BHARADVAJA. [Source: Dowson's Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology] A Rishi to whom many Vedic hymns are attributed. He was the son of Brihaspati and father of Drona, the preceptor of the Pandavas. The Taittiriya Brahmana says that "he lived through three lives" http://mythfolklore.net/india/images/gallery/bharadwaja_rr_100.jpg(Probably meaning a life of great length), and that " he became immortal and ascended to the heavenly world, to union with the sun."

In the Mahabharata he is represented as living at Hardwar; in the Ramayana he received. Rama and Sita in his hermitage at Prayaga, which was then and afterwards much celebrated.

According to some of the Puranas and the Harivansa, he became by gift or adoption the son of King Bharata, and an absurd story is told about his birth to account for his name: His mother, the wife of Utathya, was pregnant by her husband and by Brihaspati, Dirghatamas, the son by her husband, kicked his half-brother out of the womb before his time, when Brihaspati said to his mother, `Bharadwajam,' `Cherish this child of two fathers.'

Painting of Hanuman carrying the Dronagiri mountain

When Lakshmana is severely wounded by Indrajit during the war against Ravana, Hanuman is sent to fetch the Sanjivani, a powerful life-restoring herb from the Dronagiri mountain in the Himalayas to revive him. Ravana realises that if Lakshmana dies, a distraught Rama would probably give up, and so has his uncle Kalnaimi tempt Hanuman away with luxury. However, Hanuman is tipped off by a crocodile (actually a celestial being under a curse) and kills the Rakshasa. When he is unable to find the specific herb before nightfall, Hanuman again displays his might by lifting the entire Dronagiri mountain and bringing it to the battlefield in Lanka, thus helping others find the herb to revive Lakshmana. An emotional Rama hugs Hanuman, declaring him as dear to him as his own beloved brother Bharata.

This is the place (http://wikimapia.org/1682928/) where hanuman dropped the part of dronagiri parvat while taking it
to lanka. A fair takes place here on hanuman jayanti every year.
