The "problem, my friend, is as soon as you define God you limit God," Chopra replied. "Any image of God is a limitation because if God is infinite then God is beyond your imagination because you cannot imagine the infinite. For you to define God and give him these simple qualities is to actually limit God. God is beyond good and evil. God is transcendent."As someone who has beliefs somewhat similar to Pantheism, I can go along with that.
For what it's worth here are my own views on the subject. There is both creation and destruction happening all the time in the universe and that is an obvious fact.
The creative side, that of bringing things together through laws of attraction, is reflected in our spiritual nature and this is why we have qualities such as empathy, compassion and love - it's why we like being with other people – it's also why being alone and isolated for very long isn't good for us and can feel awful.
The destructive side of the universe is why we have violence and hate in the world which 'qualities' are now being very destructive, to the point where hate and warfare could destroy us all, if we let it happen. That also applies to the war and cruelty we do to other animals and earthlings that we use for food and clothing...
We are like fractals of what is happening out there in the universe and similar patterns apply in how we are and what we become. What we focus on and take our power from is what we become like, 'good' or 'evil' and in my opinion we should try hard to avoid being destructive.
Through religion the 'good' side became 'God' and the destructive side became 'the devil' but the God of all, is neither what we call 'good' or 'bad' – wouldn't be God otherwise. Ah but I hear some say that God is love. Well yes, God becomes love to us, when we focus on love and show love to others, when we focus on that side of the whole.
Everything that exists is made of information and the universe is, in a sense, conscious and is like a brain that is processing and creating events from information. Then there is the essence of the Mind of everything that exists and the essence is apparently not in our universe as such, just as the essence of our mind is apparently not our physical brain, which interprets and processes information from outside itself. Is our brain who we are? In a sense it is not yet in another sense it is. Then in a sense the whole universe is God.
There is no 'man' in the sky with a big stick in one hand and a magic healing wand in the other that we should call God. The man in the sky is a metaphor and the Logos (translated as Word) is the expression of the Mind. In fact the whole universe is the expression that was there in the beginning. John 1:1
Someone once said (I forget who) that the universe is like God dreaming and with us having minds of our own, it is up to us (baring some ET coming down to rescue humankind from his stupidity) if this part of the universe is having a nightmare or not. Let's try to make it into a pleasant dream. :)
Thanks for letting me share that. But then you couldn't stop me writing it down. Thanks anyway. Hope it didn't offend anyone's religion but it might. But let's not fight. Right?
Another audience member pressed Chopra his own experience and interpretation of God.
"God is our highest instinct to understand ourselves," Chopra said. "It's my interpretation. I can only express my experience. I'm not denying you your experience. …mine is more consistent with our understanding of biology and our understanding of evolution and our understanding of the laws of Nature, in my opinion." Can go along with that too....
