View Full Version : The true meaning of the word 'candidate'?

I wasn't sure where to post this, I guess here will do...

With the election looming, I was thinking about the word 'candidate'. I'm guessing it's semantically related to the word 'candid', the dictionary definition of which is:

1. Free from prejudice; impartial.

2. Characterized by openness and sincerity of expression; unreservedly straightforward: In private, I gave them my candid opinion.

3. Not posed or rehearsed: a candid snapshot.

Hmmm...Now, if that's what 'candid' means, then how come most candidates are the opposite? More like "Candied Hate"!
