Yes yes, I was taken back too... but my mysterious housemate has asked me twice to attend the "hellfire club" located in the caves underneath the Olde Salutation inn in Nottingham....

I refused at point blank because I don't really feel completely at ease going there to observe what they get up to n' shit and after hearing about the Hellfire club from reading David Icke's stuff, it kinda conjured up some eerie images in my head.... I wish I still had their little logo handy... but it was basically a goddess with 2 freakin' lighted torches!!! How symbolic do you wanna get!?

anyways I asked my housemate what it was like, and they do go into the occult, talkin about talismans and wot not... but fuck that shit man, I might get stepforded!! lol

I mean of all the secret societies to be asked to join :p

It just can't be healthy with a name like that, plus it's kinda pittin itself up against christianity by using the word "hellfire"... it stinks of darkness if you ask me...

(I'm not a christian by the way, but sick of the same old divide and conquer routine)

Hi there

Is that the pub, where you do down stairs, the stairs are really "old" and def not health and safety approved..and they have ghost haunting evenings and you can stay overnight?..

I was there, last year, the guy at the bar gave you the key and you could go down yourself ? I found no spookiness at all really, but wouldn't mind trying the overnight stays...esp on Halloween ! :D

ah yes, the hell fire caves....

the origional ones at west wycome ooze dark force energy. I had some very mad experiences there in the banquiting hall...

so im not suprised that this "dis banded" old secret society would have a name sake that met in a sub terranean cavern under the upper-world of nottingham.

yeah I've heard they do ghostwalks n stuff down there... but there's a whole network of caves that connect under nottingham that spread for miles (apparently, probably in other cities too)

Spookiness or not... holding a meeting with a name like that down in some caves is a little suspicious to me... they do that on a sunday evening, not sure how regularly.

yes it is interesting isnt it.. old or new? that is the queston.

what line of work is your friend in to be in such a society?

i knew about the underworld of nottingham. it doesnt suprise me in the slightest that a hell fire club should be down there dabling with powerful forces.

wow, I do love to explore things like that... I've had a few mad experiences myself up at a place called "Annesley hall" where Lord Byron Resided. All those stately homes and mansions owned by lords/bloodline seemed to be riddled with dark energy.

it's very strange that I came across that one specifically, but at least I guess we know that it's started up again... Whether it's as dark as it was originally I don't know cos I really don't feel that confident metaphysically yet to psychically protect myself against wierd stuff that might be going off there, even as a spy for team "light" :D

well now you're delving into something that's got my brain a churning, I'm not sure if I should even discuss it on here cos if my housemate found out... well nuff said... but I doubt that my housemate will.

well my housemate is a excellent artist, and I mean, like she has her own style and I can see her being big in years to come, some really wierd paintings that have come from her subconscious... I think it was maybe through her bohemian art circles connected to her course that she's on... but there's still some other stuff that makes me wonder too. I might PM you about it instead....

I'm just paranoid :p....

yes they are.... they have all had rituals performed within them at one time or another.

Aren't those caves supposed to be haunted? I think there was something about a mob killing some girl and her ghost appearing there reguarly.

more than likely, but these olde worlde network of caves, stretch for miles! and I've heard there's dungeons down there and all sorts, especially if you enter the caves from the worlds oldest inn "the old tripp to jerusalem"

so gawwwd knows what tragedies have happened down there and whether there's still stuff that goes on down there... tis creepy :p

we should get a few of us and arrange a sleep over down there! that would be fun :D

I went there this week the West Wycombe caves It was really good, enjoyed it.

The river Styx was special, an underground stream, with fake stalagmites that looked convincing, I thought they where real until I read up on it.
THE RIVER STYX

Just before the entrance to the Inner Temple there is a narrow stretch of very still water known as the River Styx. It is likely that the original miners stumbled across this natural water flow and enlarged the channel. It is also possible that its waters are drawn down from the “occasional” brook that sometimes flows to the east of the caves in heavy rains. It has been decorated with stalactites and Stalagmites although these are not natural to the excavations and were probably aquired from the Wookey Hole caves in Somerset.

Across the styx was the inner temple, the end of the tunnels a dome shaped room with a high ceiling, very atmospheric, and believed to be reserved for the elite of the hell fire club, they relocated to West Wycombe caves for secrecy, the first hell fire club was in London, then Medmenham abbey, which Dashwood had rebuilt.

They dressed as Franciscan monks.
The hell fire rituals some where a mockery of Christian rituals, they had a Baboon dressed as a priest (a sort of mascot)
who was present at rituals.

Some say there was an ancient Pagan temple down there originally (but it has never been located/proven) Although the caves where natural formations, until Sir Francis Dashwood employed local farm labourers (who'd had a bad harvest) to dig deeper and make a maze like of tunnels.
The chalk dug from the tunnels was used to build a road, which was a much needed improvement which aided easier travel.

There's also the Mausoleum and Church at the top of the hill 300 ft above the caves and Dashwood's Estate and Mansion a few miles away, worth a look, and Medenham Manor and Church.

The source of this claim may be a confused reference to a story still told today that Alexander Pope used the local militia to shoot stalactites from the roof of the Witches Cavern within the Wookey Hole caves and had them transported back to his stately house where they were installed in the grotto he had constructed some years earlier. Apparently this is a fabrication and the stalactites in question were actually stalagmites and were cut off by a local resident who presented (sold) them to collectors of whom Pope was one. What is interesting is that the collection that Pope acquired, and one excellent piece in particular, subsequently went missing. It is worth noting that Pope was for a time a friend and admirer of Lady Mary Wortley Montague, said to be a libertine herself, who was to later to meet with Sir Francis around the time of the stalactite acquisition in 1939. (An intriguing coincidence!) There are several claims that Lady Mary was one of the Medmenham nuns who had volunteered for such activities. (Source: The Arcadian friends / The Twickenham Museum)
The only specific reference to the name of this feature is from Chamber’s book of days (1832) although In 1796 Mrs Philip Lybbe Powys apparently stated “the pool of water had to be crossed on stepping stones, whereas previously there had been a boat”. It may be that the name was given by Chambers almost 60 years after it was last used by the Friars of Sir Francis. Still, Chambers was remarkably accurate in capturing detail and may have simply been recording a name told to him. Why the river should have been called this may have to do with the concept of the “seen” and the “unseen”. It may have to do with the belief that Hades lies beyond the river Styx or even that the waters of the river have magical properties of strength and invulnerability as recorded in the legend of Achilles who was dipped in the river by his mother.
Strangely, the direct translation of the name probably means River of Hate.
Certain references claim that the pool was once much larger but having visited it in person we find this hard to believe. “The corridor is narrow and the pool is actually a channel. Should the water have ever been higher then as a consequence most of the inner temple itself would have been flooded. This is assuming that what we see today is all of what was there in Dashwood’s time.”
At the end of the eastern curve of the channel is the Cursing Well. We know that it was once identified and recorded by visitors but is no longer mentioned in the official information provided by the management of the caves or the National Trust.
At Aquiziam we tend to pride ourselves our original research and our slightly sceptical approach to the subjects that we write about. However, the area surrounding the river was strangely different. When we reviewed our photographs (and we take many) we noticed that in a progression of three of them a strange mist appeared in the images. This mist was not visible to the naked eye. You can see it for yourself on this page. We admit that we have no idea what caused it.

the caves in nottingham are no big deal, they're a bit rubbish really and stink of piss

They are quite extensive though and are all under the city.

A very good friend of mine said that he once found a way into the cave system and he and a freind explored them and found a whole city beneath the streets with people working there - this was thrirty or more years ago when he was a kid.

i've no idea if the story is true, but that cave network is pretty vast and no doubt extremely deep.

Not heard of the hellfire club beneath the sally though - but years back when it was a biker bar the sally was a great bar, not been in for years (since they yuppie barred it all up) and drink in the Trip to Jerusalem, just across the road from the salutation now, a far better haunt and they do a damn fine guinness.

:D

yeh I think the salutations changed alot, I played there a couple years ago with my last band I was in and we got barred from playing there! cos the landlord decided he'd listen to what we were actually saying instead of enjoyin the music like before and hated the fact we were singing about withdrawing the troops from a warzone, a war that has been manipulated for us to fight anyway.. he didn't take to kindly to that, so we were out on our arse, fuck them if they can't take independent thought! Never been back there since. arsehole.

wow, I can't believe this thread has come back to haunt me, but I am so glad it's all in the past now, that situation was getting very unpleasantly eerie, especially when the artists boyfriend proposed his undying love for me, that's when I started piling stuff up against my bedroom door and praying I wouldn't get ass raped lol... I showed the artist all the shit her boyfriend said to me, but she would just act as if nothing was said out of the ordinary! I was like "jeezus your boyfriend has confessed his undying love for me and said ithat all this time it's not you he loves but ME! That doesn't make you question shit about him!?" *groans* they ended up stealing money off me too the snooty fucks, I hope they really get there come uppance for the hell they put me through
