DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Developers of a 1,680-foot skyscraper still under construction in oil-rich Dubai claimed Saturday that it has become the world's tallest building, surpassing Taiwan's Taipei 101 which has dominated the global skyline at 1,667 feet since 2004.
The Burj Dubai is expected to be finished by the end of 2008 and its planned final height has been kept secret. The state-owned development company Emaar Properties, one of the main builders in rapidly developing Dubai, said only that the tower would stop somewhere above 2,275 feet.
............
add the numbers and we have another 7.

Yeah true, but I reckon it goes deeper than being just a status symbol here, what with all the symbology etc.

Not half! My eyes are watering! :o
Let's see if they decide to build a dome next to it! Obeslisks and domes are often seen together in architecture. The Obelisk is well-known to be a phallic symbol, but fewer people know that the dome symbolized the vagina or womb. The penis and vagina shapes so close together create sexual energy. Here are some examples; I bet you will find others if you look:
The Washington Munument and the Hall of Congress
Big Ben and St Pauls Cathedral
(London has two sets!) Canada Tower on Canary Wharf and the Millennium Dome
St Mary's Twoer and the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford

Tallest Skyscraper In The World Almost Completed
http://img32.picoodle.com/data/img32/3/8/20/f_burjdubai10m_8242834.jpg
The Burj Dubai tower, the tallest skyscraper in the world, is about to be completed. To celebrate it, David Hobcote has taken a series of amazing high resolution pictures from the air which give an exact impression of the breathtaking, massive scale of this building. Inside, it looks like a set from Blade Runner or the interior of the Death Star.

Note the shape at the base of the tower? Looks geometrically like 3 interlocking circles :D

I think they're building these gormless erections all over the land to "shock and awe the natives"!:D I've noticed that today's architecture is becoming more and more ostentatius and flamboyant. It used to have a kind of elegant utilitarian feel, but that has now changed. Show is becoming more important than anything.

The only problem is that isn't an obelisk. If it is, then every other skyscraper in the world is an obelisk too. Sometimes you might just be digging a little too deep. The Washington Monument is an obelisk... not this thing.

Dubai has been compared to the rebuilt Atlantis. There is even a hotel baring the same name. This building is for SURE some sort of energy conduit, placed in a energy nexus.
Some of the tallest buildings on Earth are all located in this same place. I don't know about an obelisk, but there is something to be said for this idea. What is interesting is the purpose of the building. It's literally a city, if you think of it in those terms.
"Burj Khalifa has been designed to be the centrepiece of a large-scale, mixed-use development that will include 30,000 homes, nine hotels such as The Address Downtown Burj Dubai, 3 hectares (7.4 acres) of parkland, at least 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and the 12-hectare (30-acre) man-made Burj Khalifa Lake.
Also, why did they change the name?
Anyone know what Khalifa means, as in the translation....

It's not an obelisk, full of symbolism tho.
The worlds biggest obelisk is Canary wharf tower in London, righ t near the worlds biggest dome.
For a pic see my post in this thread. That's the shape of an obelisk.

It's not quite shaped like an obelisk, other than the fact that it's long and thin. They could have done a better job.

Khalifa is just a family/persons name and its extracted from the old word 'Caliph'. It just means leader.
They changed the name because of the Dubai bail out by Abu Dhabi. The leader/president/monarch/whatever of Abu Dhabi (Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan) wanted the name to be changed to His name, or its a 'thank you' gesture (but i doubt that), thus the result.

it's actually Dubai being smart.
their oil boom is close to being over. Other countries still have a lot but the UAE does not.
They have carefully been moving their economy away from being dependent on oil so that when they run out of it they can keep functioning.
Unfortunately, they have stretched out their credit to do this construction.
