To me it is like a blue-screen job. But you are right I think as any nut can put a highly reflective 'silver' coating on an item an project a 'softer' beam of mage on it.
I think that it is a bluescreen though (with the ball) because to do blue-screen succesfully on the cheap you need to lock off the camera mount. The ball in front of his face should show his face behind and not the 'static' bookshelves...Hmm! To me (a decient camera guy) it looks like he has an image of the background. Found a colour for the camera to ignore and pasted it on the ball. Then shown both together, thelling the cam to ignore this colour, thus showing the second scene (background)

Yes they have a system in development which projects camera footage onto a surface, so a tank can sit still with some rocks on the right, them the right side cam will project it to the left side so the tank outline is harder to spot
someone looking at the left side will just see rocks
