Most Israelis support Palestinian state: Poll

Despite Tel Aviv's opposition against formation of sovereign Palestinian homeland, most of the Israeli settlers favor a two-state solution, polls say.

According to result of a survey published on Friday, 55 percent of Jewish Israelis think Netanyahu should support the two-state solution.

The poll conducted by the Rafi Smith Institute and published on the Ynet news Web site comes as ultra-rightist Prime Minister Netanyahu prepares for first official trip to Washington next week.

The concept of Israeli-Palestinian coexistence seems to appeal most to Israel's secular community, 73 of whom gave their support to withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territories.

They, however, are faced with fierce oppositions from 70 percent of hardliner Orthodox Jews, who "did not agree with the idea of two states."

The poll further indicates the Israeli seniors are weary of relentless fears of retaliatory measures from the Palestinian resistance fighters, with 63 percent of the over-60s favoring a Palestinian state.

The number was as low as 46 percent among the under-30 participants, though.

The poll was conducted among a representative sample of 500 Jewish Israelis and had a 4.5 percent margin of error.
