(CNN) — Sweden and Denmark are uniting their airspaces to make air travel more efficient, the governments of the two countries announced Friday.

“National borders should no longer have to determine what route the airlines have to fly,” said a joint statement from Asa Torstensson, Sweden’s minister for communication, and Lars Barfoed, Denmark’s minster for transport.

“The focus should be on effectiveness and being able to take the shortest route so that we avoid criss-cross flying because of national borders.”
The joint airspace, which will come into effect before the end of 2009, will save approximately 52,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the governments said.

Travelers will also benefit from the move as airlines are expected to be able to save up to 45 million euros ($61 million) per year, all according to a calculation by the Swedish Ministry of Communication, Energy and Enterprise.

The move has been made possible by the new “Single Sky” European Union legislation. It promotes the construction of Functional Airspace Blocks that take into consideration how people travel rather than national borders.

The Swedish-Danish airspace is the first actual FAB to be set up in Europe, Erik Bromander with the Swedish ministry of communication, energy and enterprise told CNN.

“We see this as a pilot project which we hope can lead the way to more effective and efficient air travel in Europe,” he said.
