Has anyone read about this? London's Ring Of Steel is coming to New York City in America.

One of the most disturbing things in the news today is an article by Cara Buckley about plans to have an American version of London’s Ring of Steel implemented in New York City. The article is entitled “New York Plans Surveillance Veil for Downtown,” Monday, July 9, 2007.
The Ring of Steel is an extensive web of cameras that was first built in the early 1990s in London in order to deter IRA attacks. However, this Ring of Steel, this megalomaniac intrusion into human freedom, has done virtually nothing. All of the cameras went down at once when Princess Diana died in her car crash, effectively leaving the reason for the crash largely unsolved to this day. In addition, this camera network did not help to prevent the 2005 London subway bombings, nor any recent car bombs. J. Carafano, a senior fellow for homeland security at the Heritage Foundation (a conservative research group in Washington) states in the article, “there is little evidence to suggest that security cameras deter crime or terrorists.” Even so, this plan called the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative seeks to replicate London’s Ring of Steel in New York City beginning the end of this year.
Police officials in New York City say that more than 100 cameras will begin monitoring vehicles moving through Lower Manhattan, and this is just the beginning. This surveillance system will be the first of its kind in the United States, and will be “an extensive web of cameras and roadblocks designed to detect, track and deter terrorists,” in addition, when fully financed, there will be “not only license plate readers, but also 3,000 public and private security cameras below Canal Street, as well as a coordination center staffed by the police and private security officers, and movable road blocks”.
This system will cost an estimated $90 million, and the department has since obtained $25 million; the existing funds will be used to “install 116 license plate readers in fixed and mobile locations, including cars and helicopters, in the coming months”. These license plate readers have already been ordered.
The 3,000 security cameras that will be installed below Canal Street are supposed to be up and running by the end of 2008; two-thirds of these cameras are owned by downtown companies, and some are already in place. Also, pivoting gates are supposed to be installed at particular “critical” intersections that swing out to block traffic or a suspect car at “the push of a button”.
Can someone tell me why downtown corporations own the surveillance cameras? Who are the police and “corporate security agents” that will be working in headquarters? Why does the chief spokesman for the police, Paul J. Browne, say that this plan “does not need City Council approval”? This is not only illegal, but it is being done without the people’s consent. In fact, most people don’t even know about this. Also “corporate security agents” are agents that work only within corporations and investigate things like employee drug use, drug trafficking, theft, sexual harassment, sabotage, and other company policies or violations of the law. Corporate security agents have nothing to do with monitory terrorist, nonetheless the general population. Unless of course, the cameras are owned by corporations. This is absolute madness.
The entire system is forecast to be fully operational by 2010, just in time for the projected “completion of several new buildings in the financial district, including the new Goldman Sachs world headquarters”. Goldman Sachs world headquarters? Wait a second, a despotic surveillance system run in part by corporate security agents to be fully operation just in time for Goldman Sachs WORLD HEADQUARTERS? Sounds a little fishy, don’t it folks.
If all of this information isn’t scary enough, police say they are thinking about using face-recognition technology. This system will monitor every single person in these areas, no matter who they are. But, it’s for your protection! Right? Wrong. If, god forbid, this Lower Manhattan Security Initiative is implanted, it will be a giant step towards an Orwellian “1984” big brother styled fascist state that will no doubt spread throughout our nation, and reduce the general population to nothing more than sheep. To not protest this, any way you can, either through e-mails to senators, representatives, and whatever organizations and people in power who are in support of this initiative, would be to help in the destruction of American freedom and democracy as we know it, or at least as we knew it.
