Thanks, wazaaap! This is a combined North American Swine Flu/Avian Fly/European Swine Flu/Human Flu mutant that is no doubt mutating as you read this. It's also reported now in France and Spain, so you guys are next. I'm watching this very closely. It's good to have a shorter thread here in the Survival area so I don't have to wade through several pages of "cut and paste" stories from the MSM which are probably BS anyway.
Now's the time to download Hesperian Publishing's new "Where There Is No Doctor" and stock medical supplies. Also get the ingredients for the oral rehydration fluid recipe that I posted.
We're stocking up on anti-bacterial hand soap, chlorine bleach, and face masks. I've also ordered a pound of black elderberries to make elderberry tincture (Sambucol) which will hopefully be delivered early this week. Other than that, our neighbors and the wife and I are all set to quarantine ourselves.
Good luck y'all!

No link for the oral rehydration fluid... that came from my medical notes (I was a paramedic for many years).
Elderberry tincture:
http://www.texasminutemen.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87
This is information based on Sambucus nigra, the black European elder. This information does not apply to any other variety of elder. DO NOT USE any other variety of elder as a medicinal preparation. Other varieties are toxic i.e. leaves, berries, bark, root and can cause nausea, varmint, and diarrhea. ONLY S. nigra BERRIES and flowers are used medicinally.
Use any REALLY clean, preferably sterilized, glass jar - size does not really matter, but quart canning jars seem to be preferred for ease of storing, sterilizing, and filling. In ANY size glass jar, fill the jar 1/3 full of dried black (S. nigra) elderberries, this does NOT have to be exact, eyeball measurement is just fine. One pound of dried elderberries will eyeball fill 3 quarts with a bit left over or you can just evenly divide a pound of the dried berries between 3 quart jars. More really does NOT make the tincture stronger. Now fill the jar almost to the top with vodka, not less than 80 proof. DO NOT USE any other alcohol you happen to have in your stash no matter the proof, brand or type. VODKA = TINCTURE; Other alcohol = non-medicinal alcohol. Now, cap the jar securely, give a shake or two, and store in a cool, dark area for 7-10 days. That is the universally accepted time period to produce tincture. Longer does not make stronger. After the 7-10 days you can strain off the liquid and toss the berry residue. DO NOT reuse that residue, the resulting liquid will not work as you expect. Your tincture is now ready to use should there be influenza in your area. You do not have to strain off the liquid, but the tincture is not going to get any more medicinal just sitting there soaking the berries. The alcohol molecules fill up to capacity within the 7-10 days and can absorb no more no matter how long it soaks.
Since elderberries medicinal properties work directly on Influenza A or B virus present in the body it is NOT a preventative, so taking it in hopes of avoiding infection will not work. When an adult exhibits symptoms of influenza infection i.e. sudden onset of high fever, dry persistent cough, weakness, commercially prepared elderberry preparations suggest taking internally 2 teaspoons of preparation every 4 hours i.e. Sambucol. To use homemade elderberry tincture consensus of opinion seems to be that taking 2 Tablespoons every 6 hours or so for 8-10 days will do the trick. There will be a reduction in symptoms within 2-3 days of taking elderberry tincture as per recommended above, but the virii will still be present so take for the full 8-10 days just like taking an antibiotic for a prescribed treatment course.

Great folklore attached to the elder,
http://www.gardenplansireland.com/forum/about1089.html
I,m lucky enough to live in the middle of acres of elder. Jonas, whats the best way to dry fresh elder berries picked straight from the tree, in order to maintain its potency. I,d like to make some tincture, seeing as there is plenty of elder here.
Elder berry wine as well maybe;)

griswald, first make sure they're the right kind of elderberries! Then my best guess would be just to run them through your food dehydrator like drying any other berry.

Hmm, well I work from home, I live in a hamlet that is just a row of houses along a road, my sons school round the corner is a combined first and middle and it is a small village school. The nearest shop is a mile away, and that's just the local SPAR.
However, I have a date through for an operation to remove a massive kidney stone - 12th May.
I'm a bit worried, the stone is causing severe pain and a constant kidney infection, without the op it will just get larger and eventually cause kidney failure.
I really don't like the idea of being in a hospital (in a city) if there is a major flu pandemic :( However, if it's hit the fan by then, the hospital will probably be too full to carry out operations anyway.

Fuck man. I read that and lost myself in my mind for about 20 minutes. With all this remove 67% of the pop or w/e being thrown around all they would have to do is say that they have some mad bad evil serial killer disease and slaughter them all in the name of protecting the uninfected...

You can use your oven and a cookie sheet. put down a layer of paper towels, then a layer of elderberries. Set the oven to 145 degrees F (63 degrees C). It should take 8-12 hours. Here's the link:

Good link. Figure that the actual infection rates are at least 10 times the government numbers.
This is merely the first round. The second wave of the pandemic with a more virulent mutated virus (or virii) will start up this fall. Check the timeline of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic here:
http://www.twoop.com/medicine/archives/2005/10/1918_spanish_flu.html
History does repeat itself, and usually not for the better.

yeah , there are some good 3d maps out there too that allow the user to see things as they are on their pc as though they are there .
but since survival is the issue and being prepared , I recommend mini maps , they come in the form of the size of a credit card and comes with a holder and a magnifying glass to largen images of the maps , quite handy for the pocket too , I will see if i can find them online .
