Those who download illegal music from the Internet, buy ten times as much in legal music.
There is some indication that those who have used the illegal thepiratebay.org website to download free music illegally may actually have stimulated sales of legal music on the Internet according to a Norwegian survey which shows that pirates are the best customers on iTunes and other legal music sites.
The survey concludes that those who download music free of charge and illegally, are also the biggest customers of pay-for-music sites, according to Aftenposten.no.
Surprising
The most surprising thing about it is that the share of pay-for-music downloads is so high,” says Assistant Professor Audun Molde of the Nordic Institute of Scene and Studio.
“The results seem to show that twice as much paid music is downloaded as pirated music. And those who say that they download free music are also those who are the biggest purchasers of music on the Internet,” Molde says.
EMI disagrees
A spokesman for EMI, however, says he does not believe that the survey confirms the idea that illegal downloads stimulate legal sales.
“There is no doubt that the consumption of music is increasing while turnover is dropping. This can only be explained by illegal music downloading affecting legal sales,” EMI spokesman Bjøærn Rogstad tells Aftenposten.
Molde does not agree
“Whether those who download illegally would otherwise have bought that same music legally is a hypothetical issue,” Molde says adding that the real problem is that the recording industry has ignored the issue for so long that free services have developed that are more attractive than paying services.
