(REUTERS 23/04/2009):
In a study likely to make school janitors cringe, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday that chewing gum may boost academic performance in teenagers. Many U.S. schools ban chewing gum because children often dispose of the sticky chaw under chairs or tables. But a team led by Craig Johnston at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found that students who chewed gum during math class had higher scores on a standardized math test after 14 weeks and better grades at the end of the term than students in the class who did not chew gum. The study was funded by chewing gum maker WRIGLEY.
"For the first time we've been able to show in a real-life kind of situation that students did perform better when they were allowed to chew," said Gil Leveille, executive director of the WRIGLEY SCIENCE INSTITUTE, a research arm of Wm Wrigley Jr, which is now a part of MARS. Leveille said WRIGLEY has gotten feedback from many of its gum customers who say chewing gum helps them stay focussed. So, four years ago the company started the science institute to see if some of these claims have merit. The researchers at Baylor studied four math classes or 108 students aged 13 to 16 years old from a Houston, Texas, charter school that serves mostly low-income Hispanic students.
About half got free WRIGLEY'S SUGAR-FREE GUM to chew during class, homework and tests. They chewed at least one stick of gum 86 percent of the time they were in math class and 36 percent of the time they were doing homework. The other half went without.
After 14 weeks, the gum chewers had a three percent increase in their math scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills achievement test, a small but statistically significant change, according to Johnston and colleagues, who presented their findings at the American Society for Nutrition scientific meeting in New Orleans.
They found no difference in math scores between the two groups in another test called the Woodcock Johnson III Tests of Achievement. However, the gum-chewers did get better final grades in the class than their non-chewing peers.
Another Wrigley-funded study found that college students in a lab who were given difficult computer tasks had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol when they were chewing gum compared to when they were not.
Leveille said he thinks chewing gum helps reduce stress so students can do their best work. And while he is aware that many schools have a dim view of students chewing gum in class, he hopes the findings may change that a bit.
"It's not a matter of chewing. It's a matter of gum disposal," Leveille said, adding that that can be overcome by teaching proper disposal behaviours.
If that fails, he quipped, "We'll have to provide the janitors with scrapers."
COMMENT: WHAT WRIGLEYS DOESN'T TELL PEOPLE IS THAT ALL THEIR GUM PRODUCTS ARE FULL OF ASPARTAME AND OTHER ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS.
So, pass your math test now -
but have a stroke, or get a brain tumour and bone / organ cancer later...

Aspartame in it don't chew.
That and possibly Titanium Dioxide.
Titanium Dioxide is used as a pigment whitener in many products including food. Canada and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, has added this as potentially a hazardous material according to their safety standards, because it may lead to forms of cancer.

Since I realised the shite in gum, I wouldn't touch it again, ever. Same with mints, most of them have nasties in too..in fact probably nearly all "mainstream" confectionary has crap in it.
Is there a gum out there that is actually good for you?? Contains no sugars, sweetners, but say herbs, natural sweetners, etc? If that article is to be believed and the chewing DID help, it was most probably the chewing action, as the crap that is in it would have done them no good...so an healthy alternative would be great !

ElimiTaste ZAPP! is the first mainstream gum for the breath conscious consumer that is not only Sugarfree, but also Aspartame Free. Also sweetened with Xylitol
What's the big deal about ElimiTaste? Isn't gum all the same?
The simple answer is...No! Gum is like any other product.
There are good and bad gums. We have built our company around manufacturing a premium line of products that is far superior to the competition.
We use expensive, top quality ingredients, and we rely on our growing, and loyal customer base that truly appreciate the ElimiTaste difference.
To understand the difference between ElimiTaste and our competitors (Eclipse, Dentyne Ice, Orbit, Trident White, Ice Breakers, etc.) you may want to understand our company, our strategy, and our philosophy.
These other brands are all owned by 3 major companies. They lock up the shelf space at every retailer under the sun. They bombard us with television commercials, famous spokespeople, etc. They then manufacture their gum in the most inexpensive way possible. No one would argue that their strategy is volume. This means a lower quality product. A commodity if you will. While some of the flavors may offer enjoyable taste, the products are simply mass produced to catch a certain percentage of the consumers taste. We don't knock these companies. They do quite well. This just isn't our strategy or goal.
We developed the ElimiTaste line of gum after asking, and listening to you: The Consumer. We realised that even though these companies own aisles and aisles of space, there were, and are, many consumers that wanted more.
Formulating a Sugar Free, and Aspartame Free chewing gum that uses Xylitol exclusively was not an easy task. Our ingredients are far more expensive than the competition. Yet, we have to sell our gum at roughly the same price because that's what customers desire. So, we produce a high quality product, that costs more, and we work on smaller margins.
SmokeScreen is the first gum on the market that actively reduces the aftertaste and bad breath from smoking cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. With 25-30% of the world consuming tobacco products, we recognised the need for a chewing gum that freshens the smokers breath. We have experienced a massive amount of new business from the smoking community that was chewing the other brands simply "because it was at the store." Neither of our chewing gum flavors are short term, cheap cover ups. We offer premium mint flavors and our gum neutralises bad breath.
The list goes on, but the difference is clear. We're in a competitive market, but we offer quality. We stand behind our products and we have over 1 million (and growing quickly) satisfied customers. So whether you buy the gum online, at a store, or just visit our site or tell a friend: We appreciate it.

Of course I can't be sure that they're lying about the ingredients in the bottle, but Pepsi (original ~ I haven't checked the others) has no artificial sweeteners in it.
It's the only (fizzy) soft-drink that we have in our home.

They offer a Xylitol sweetened chewing gum at the natural supplement store near my place. It's about $2.79 a pack for 12 pieces. It's a bit expensive, but if you have to chew gum, this is the way to go.

I eat those Haribo fizzy sweets. They're the only ones though really. I have coeliac disease and they're gluten free!
I imagine they're full of crap, heh.
I was amazed to see Walkers prawn cocktail crisps contain aspartame! I was munching on a pack and suddenly thought "these mofos taste intensely sweet", and I knew. Looked at the back to check and indeedy I was right. Used to like em too. Roast Chicken flavour from now on.

Gum chewing really messes up your digestive track and is not good for you.
It was omitted too that many more gum chewers spit their used wads into water fountains.:eek::eek:
