The Pope has science on his side in his remarks on condoms in Africa
"In many sub-Saharan African countries, high condom use has yet to produce demonstrable benefit ... sad experience shows that high HIV transmission can coexist with high condom use."
a program promoting abstinence before marriage and fidelity in marriage in Uganda was successful.
Why have massive condom education and distribution campaigns failed to slow the AIDS epidemic in Africa, while a campaign stressing abstinence before marriage and fidelity in marriage has had positive results?
The Pope is right in worrying that condom promotion may actually increase the problem, because condom promotion campaigns necessarily spread a false sense of security. The campaigns don't say that condoms, even used every time and correctly will only reduce your risk of infection, and you may still contract HPV, which causes cancer and warts. Instead the paint a picture of fun and freedom

Dlb, really :D You are asking for trouble here.
Condoms do more than just protect (or not) against aids - condoms protect against std's in general and against unwanted pregnancy.
Most people who suffer from hiv in africa now, are born with virus - that could have been prevented with proper contraceptives. Also rape is rampant, of children too (some crazy myths about raping virgins/children as cure for aids) prostitution widespread, poverty, - all these things are part of the picture. To make this an issue about condoms is simplistic. The situation is more complex, involving many many serius problems of which the catholic church is not without guilt in creating, and maintaining, eg. the stance on contraceptives.
If the pope doesn't believe in protection why does he feel it's necessary to drive around in a bullet proof pope-mobile? Doesn't he trust god? ;)

AIDS via sex?
or via vaccination?
Consider the official conspiracy theory...
Monkeys infect Africans with AIDs. Western sex tourist gets infected. Flys back to US where AIDS is initially confined to gay men in New York and San Francisco, but AIDs in Africa spreads among heterosexuals.
Now the alternative theory...
Homosexual men were being vaccinated against hepatitis.
Africans were being vaccinated against loads of stuff.
The US military were considering biological agents that could work against particular ethnic groups.
Which theory adds up?
Bearing in mind that the Bilderbergers wanted to reduce the world's population and Africa has been hit numerous times by western influenced wars and famines.
Condoms are a rubber herring in my opinion.
There are more STDs than ever in the UK but AIDs hasn't spread in anything like the numbers they forecast in the old AIDS is an iceberg days...
AIDS = man made genocidal creation.

I agree Anthony, the situation is more complex. But just because use/not use of condoms is not the decisive factor in the aids-situation in africa, it does not logically follow that the pope is justified in saying condoms should not be used at all.
That's like saying because flouride is possibly not helping to protect against caries, we should stop brushing our teeth. It's assanine. Dlb's (lovely though he is :)) logic is twisted here.
Condoms help protect Africans against unwanted pregnancies, and helps women in particular: it is still significant that African women get all the help they possibly can is it not? They have along way to go.
You are so right, Africa has been hit numerous times, and the catholic church has played a part in that too. They were always there, the men in cloaks, the missionary forerunners helping wicked empires conquer and poison the minds of natives in Africa (and south america and many other places in the world), supporting slavery, witch hunting and playing a direct role in the eradication of native traditions and beliefs. Identity theft! Soul destruction! Spiritual crimes the catholic church have comitted for centuries!
If they don't want to be part of the solution now, the least they could do is not add any more problems. Such as telling poor men and women they shouldn't use contraception, even though they can't afford to feed their children or send them to school etc. thus perpetuating a system of poverty, lack of education etc that again leads to poor health, disease, crime, prostitution, civil wars and political corruption and on and on.
Africa is complex...
Dlb: Why pope drives in protected pope-mobile? Answer is simple: He needs protection right? ;)

I think the Pope doesn't have the slightest freaking clue what is going on in this case. Perhaps he hasn't spent a great deal of time in Africa, living among the poeple. Perhaps he relies instead on the advice of his cohorts who tell him what he wants to hear as they vie for his position.
There is a pervasive cultural stigma against using condoms in many parts of Africa. Those men that do use condoms have to hide it from their peers for fear of ridicule. Many believe you are less of a man if you use a condom, and some even believe that using a condom will turn you gay. Rumors abound that the condoms themselves are part of a conspiracy to spread AIDS. The problem is made worse by the fathers who pass this bullshit knowledge down to their sons.

One African I know said that the condoms in the UK are too small. He has to get the largest ones from the clinic and still they are too small. Maybe the size of the condoms is also an issue.

Noone anywhere is dying of AIDS, its just a socipolitical construct. HIV has never even ben proven to exist let alone cause AIDS.
In africa they are just dying of the same diseases they have always died of under a new name.

in my opinion ... the pope is like a moth ... a creature of darkness that circles around the light ... don't get fooled by his holy appearance ... i'm sorry for being so hard and radical on this one ... the church has destroyed relatives of me , by making guilt to hard to bear and wasting lives in that manner ...
anyway peace to all of ya ...

The problem lies in the above statement. It is false, and it is worded in a way that is meant to deceive. There is no high condom use in the places where HIV/AIDS is most pervasive. I already explained why in my previous post.

Are you joking?
Condom usage leads to HIV?
What exactly leads you to believe that's true, aside from the Pope having said it? Because honestly, that's one of the most idiotic statements that has been uttered in modern history.
