Antarctic Ice Is GROWING,
Not Melting Away

ICE is expanding in much of Antarctica, contrary to the widespread public belief that global warming is melting the continental ice cap.
The results of ice-core drilling and sea ice monitoring indicate there is no large-scale melting of ice over most of Antarctica, although experts are concerned at ice losses on the continent's western coast.
Antarctica has 90 per cent of the Earth's ice and 80 per cent of its fresh water, The Australian reports. Extensive melting of Antarctic ice sheets would be required to raise sea levels substantially, and ice is melting in parts of west Antarctica. The destabilisation of the Wilkins ice shelf generated international headlines this month.
However, the picture is very different in east Antarctica, which includes the territory claimed by Australia.
East Antarctica is four times the size of west Antarctica and parts of it are cooling. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research report prepared for last week's meeting ofAntarctic Treaty
Australian Antarctic Division glaciology program head Ian Allison said sea ice losses in west Antarctica over the past 30 years had been more than offset by increases in the Ross Sea region, just one sector of east Antarctica.
"Sea ice conditions have remained stable in Antarctica generally," Dr Allison said.
The melting of sea ice - fast ice and pack ice - does not cause sea levels to rise because the ice is in the water. Sea levels may rise with losses from freshwater ice sheets on the polar caps. In Antarctica, these losses are in the form of icebergs calved from ice shelves formed by glacial movements on the mainland.
Last week, federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett said experts predicted sea level rises of up to 6m from Antarctic melting by 2100, but the worst case scenario foreshadowed by the SCAR report was a 1.25m rise.
Mr Garrett insisted global warming was causing ice losses throughout Antarctica. "I don't think there's any doubt it is contributing to what we've seen both on the Wilkins shelf and more generally in Antarctica," he said.
Dr Allison said there was not any evidence of significant change in the mass of ice shelves in east Antarctica nor any indication that its ice cap was melting. "The only significant calvings in Antarctica have been in the west," he said. And he cautioned that calvings of the magnitude seen recently in west Antarctica might not be unusual.
"Ice shelves in general have episodic carvings and there can be large icebergs breaking off - I'm talking 100km or 200km long - every 10 or 20 or 50 years."
Ice core drilling in the fast ice off Australia's Davis Station in East Antarctica by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-Operative Research Centre shows that last year, the ice had a maximum thickness of 1.89m, its densest in 10 years. The average thickness of the ice at Davis since the 1950s is 1.67m.
A paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded.

Gust of Hot Air is a blog outlining my own statistical analysis of Australian Weather. I am Jonathan Lowe, and have completed by Bsc(hons) in statistical analysis as well as my Master of Science. I have done 2 years of my PhD There is a lot of statistical information regarding climate change and I intend to provide statistical analysis into the area to prove if the recent well advertised rise in temperature is at all statistically significant. Results will be uploaded here on a regular basis

So much news has been about Australias crops and the lack of rainfall of the Murray Darling Basing. The worst drought in 1000 years, and most definetly the worst on record.

I'm not gonna get into whether or not global warming is real, but the evidence in that article does not prove anything one way or another. Just because it is cold or hot, wet or dry, where I live doesn't prove jack about anything on a global scale. It only says something about the localized conditions in one area. The actual facts are that while there is some evidence of the South Pole expanding, the North Pole is on the virge of completely disappearing during the summer months, and many of the world's largest glaciers have begun to melt at a rate that is exceeding even what the IPCC's worst-case models predicted.
Also, while there is some evidence that parts of the South Pole are expanding, there is much study left to do to figure out what it means. While it could be expanding in size, it might not be increasing in actual mass and density. For instance, there is a big difference between 10" of snow and 10" of ice.

Arctic Ice 2X Thicker Than Expected, Scientists Report On Expedition
Ice in the Arctic is often twice as thick as expected, report surprised scientists who returned last week from a major scientific expedition. The scientists - a 20-member contingent from Canada, the U.S., Germany, and Italy - spent one month exploring the North Pole as well as never-before measured regions of the Arctic. Among their findings: Rather than finding newly formed ice to be two metres thick, "we measured ice thickness up to four metres," stated a spokesperson for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization.
The Alfred Wegener Institute is one of the six research organizations involved in the month-long expedition, called Pan-Arctic Measurements and Arctic Climate Model Inter Comparison Project. The other five include three from Canada (Environment Canada, University of Alberta, York University) one from the U.S. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and one from Italy (Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate.

What happens to all those calves swimming around? Is the problem that they contribute more methane than non Antarctic calves?

Yaaawnnnn!
Notice the dates are always years away and really rounded off to target the mind.....2100 2100 2100
Fact is the ice has been melting since the end of the last ice-age, it is starting to halt now and some think it is due to rapidly start increasing in the near future as the pacemaker of the ice-ages comes into play.

Croatian physicist, Academic and Dr. Sci. Vladimir Paar says that we are going to new Pleistocene epocha actually. He asked on conference on climate change in Hungary why they shows only temperature trends in the last one hundred years, not in the last 1000 or 10,000 years. There was no answer.
What was average temperature in 18th century or 14th or 10th. Sorry people but that line on graph is going down. The truth is that our technology affects clime with CO2 emissions but it cases only slowing down natural Earth cycle in exchanging period of Pleistocene and Holocene. So we have bigger problem. That is why we have more extreme weather (Temperature changes in few hours for 20oC up or down). Elite is aware of that. So theyve started war (war on terror) for energy sources and fresh water supplies (resources that will become more important in future). You can imagine living on Earth with fall of average temperature for just 5oC. More energy for heating, vegetation changes, food crisis

"Each year, millions of square miles of sea ice melt and refreeze. The amount varies from season to season. Despite pictures taken in summer of floating polar bears, data reported by the University of Illinois' Arctic Climate Research Center at the beginning of this year showed global sea ice levels the same as they were in 1979, when satellite observations began."

It seems to me that the only people who agree that the world is warming and that man is at fault are the politicians and the scientists employed to give them the data to support the new laws and taxes that the politicians bring in (oh and the media as well but lets not talk about them!) Our planet and its environmental systems cannot be pigeon holed to support the shaky theories of scientific groups with pound signs/dollar signs in their eyes!
Conspiracy theories aside, the internet is full of reports (i have no links or sources, do you own research!) from geologists to every other type of ..ists. one example is eveidence of a geomagnetic reversal (http://geophysics.suite101.com/article.cfm/geomagnetic_reversal)
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tfLA1vKlfE) i have not watched the video in full so i cannot fully comment on it.
if we also note that during a geomagnetic reversal the magnetic field weakens (so im told) this leaves us open to high levels of solar radiation which causes havoc with the environmental systems, couple in the sun spot cycle which is due to peak in 2012. (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/10mar_stormwarning.htm)
kind of refutes the whole CO2 debate.
