I suggest buying a Caravan..... With Cash... no loans, just a comfortable Caravan.
Many people durring the Credit Crunch will be looking to sell off their Caravans deeming them to be a Luxurie they cant afford. I would suggest it a neccisary you cant afford to be without.
If you loose your job and cant afford mortgage repayments and the banks foreclose, you have your caraven to get by in.
Those of you with Allotments:
Why not build an emergancy house in your alotment. Fk planning permission. Build it underground and cover with top soil. The Benefits of this are, no council tax, no Gas/Elec Bills, No one knows its there, hide from the soldiers or keep large amounts of stored food away from looters. and Build it properly it could give some protection from a nuclear fall out.
You'd need a digger vehicle to build an underground den.

Hi dlb2007.
Not so, me thinks.
In times of hardship (percived or otherwise) folk tend to opt out of the more expencive hols and go for the 'cheap and chearfull' type. This in most cases (concerning caravans, read a couple of years ago in a mag and on telly) starts by using a friends, or a hired, caravan.
I am with you there on the idea of providing oneself with a 'bolt hole', but these things need more planing than one imagines. Before I go on, or you read on, these topics are covered in detail on other posts in these Survival / Local Economies / Communities pages.
What is not covered is the idea of digging a hole on your allotment. This would be tough to do if others are there. Considering that you would be spending cash on the production of the the building, you may as well buy a small plot now (no time better than now folks) of woodland or scrubland and concentrate on that. As for paying outright, the cost of woodland now is quite cheap and if you were to fork out for a mobile home or a caravan (I know that they are cheap, but chearfull they are not) instead you still need to put it somewhere. You might end up becoming a nomad of the by-ways.
Like I said. Look for the stuff allready writen on the subjects in an older topic, and re-think the plan of action.
IMHO :) Tom.
I've lived in a caravan that had no running water or electricity but thank god gas. If I'm honest it wasn't too much trouble at all to live in. I lived in it for nearly 2 months. I loved it, actually.
Also in my labouring days I was forever digging deep holes and trenches and it is MUCH harder than people think. Once you hit 1.5-2 feet deep the ground becomes solid and you need a pick axe to go further. It is BACK BREAKING WORK. On one job the gaffer refused to give us pick axes incase we punctured a gas pipe and we ended up with the skin on our palms all torn up from using the shovels to punch through the rock before shoveling it out.
a digger is essential.
Then you gotta think about structural integrity. You don't want the thing caving in on you. And also size is vital... I don't think anyone has the cheek to make something small enough for himself alone. If I'm going to do it I'm going to have to make it bloody huge for about 5-6 of us with divided living quarters and toilet areas.

Hi there - the cheapest method is to buy a large steel shipping container, dig a hole to the size it is, drop it in, cover it over with some of the spoil then add venting and you are away. If you wanted to live in it properly you would have to organise plumbing, electric etc but it is simple enuff to do. They sell these over here for $2000.00 and this method is used for all sorts of clandestine things...

Now that Sir, is an excellent Idea.

I will pay local alcoholic £20 and a bottle of white lightning to dig.
