Deep in the Congolese jungle is a band of apes that, according to local legend, kill lions, catch fish and even howl at the moon. Local hunters speak of massive creatures that seem to be some sort of hybrid between a chimp and a gorilla.

Yeah where are the pictures! If anyone is claiming to study the animals or to have seen them there's no excuse for lack of pics.
This does sound like an awesome story, I especially like the remoteness of the area they investigated.
If it's claimed these species were howling at the moon, but later the man researching them claims they did not howl at the moon, then which group is howling at the moon? Different species from the Billi perhaps?

Ha! I totally thought of that. Man eating chimps, a different species altogether. And there were alot of them.
In the book, they actually covertly observe a very large group of the monkeys without being ripped to shreds. Reminds me of the researcher mentioned by the OP and his observation of the billis.
In the movie, they just bump into the killer apes in the ruins and don't really get to observe them! So in that way the book was cooler.

I'm a zoologist and even without pics, I find this plausible. There are several regions of the world weher man has not even set foot.
I would however suggest that these would not be Chimpanzees but Gorillas, as man hunts for meat so do apes, and if you have ever seen either a big cat species next to a Silverback it's easy enough to do the math that a few Silvers could easily take down a big cat in the right circumstances.
Studies in Gorillas from different regions have shown that in some regions they use very complex tools, and wash their food in a river before eating, and in another region, they simply eat straight from the plant/tree.wherever they pick the food up from.
Differnt tribes of exactly the same species have developed many different ways to survive depending on their enviroment.
However this has spiked my interest and i'll be looking into it.! I'm wondering if it is in any of the trade journals.
Apologies for multiple typos, i've a sprained wrist, and typing with one hand!

After a quick google I realised these are The Bili Apes, big, clever chimps. Well known about in my field, but not enough research being done to clarify if they require a new classification.
