It seems this cat has overiden it's own DNA. If a cat can do it then surely humans can too.

Considering we're omnivores, we can eat pretty much anything (and do without certain things) and adapt pretty quickly, so I'm not sure it's a DNA issue that makes humans seek out meat. I've been eating a vegetarian diet for over 10 years now, without ill effect. Occasionally people come out with the "blood type" excuse for reverting to eating meat if they once tried a vegetarian diet and gave up, saying they felt weak. But I've seen alternative research which has shown that people with the blood type that supposedly will wither and die on a vegetarian diet, get on fine with it. So it makes one wonder how much psychology is at play in the whole issue.

Generally if people eat the right food combinations, a non meat diet is perfectly fine for most people and was common for a long long time in history. I've worked in high speed and heavy manual work environments for years on a vegetarian diet, which annhilates the claim that people will become weak and lethargic on it. Interesting subject.

REALLY............. Would be them bloody masons

Argenine and Taurine

Arginine...

Is a building block for proteins, called an amino acid. Arginine is vital to many of the animal’s internal chemical factory’s functions. No Arginine and the entire factory goes on strike.

Cats – Are extremely sensitive to even a single meal deficient in Arginine and are unable to make their own Arginine within their chemical factory. Cats need lots of protein, and Arginine is involved in aiding the elimination of the protein waste products so the wastes don’t pollute the whole factory!

Dogs - Are not very sensitive to low levels of Arginine in their diets and produce enzymes internally that can aid production of Arginine.

Taurine...

An amino acid that is not built into proteins, but is distributed throughout most body tissues. Taurine is important for healthy functioning of the heart, retina, bile fluid and certain aspects of reproduction.

Cats – Must eat preformed Taurine and since Taurine is not found in plant tissues, cats must consume meat to obtain Taurine. Cats can’t make their own, therefore, Taurine is essential in the diets of cats. Here again, meat has to be supplied to the factory so the Taurine can be extracted for its many uses.

Dogs – Make their own in their internal chemical factory.

Remmeber:

Obligate (obligated) and Facultative (non-obligate carnivore) are not interchangeable.

I don't believe this story as you can imagine.

Well it says the cats owner tries to slip meat into its food.
I guess it just hates the taste of meat? Must be defective. Return to factory for refund.

I'd like to hear some alternative view from biologists on this issue that aren't basing their beliefs just on old "by the book" data, my cat eats various different products that you wouldn't think cats like, for example she is going nuts for raw potatoes(peeled and copped ofcourse).

They eat grass to, a certain species of grass, It's called 'Pica' by action. Felids and Canids use other food stuffs to supplement imbalances, by innate instinct and part learned.

I know about grasses, dogs do that to and they also eat feces of their own or other species for suplements, but again whats up with potatoes?

Valerian (I think) - a mild, natural sedative.

It's not just cats, my dog loves salad, tomatoes, carrots etc.
Dogs and humans are omnivores, not cats though. The cat will need supplements.
The omnivorous thing though, humans adapted to being able to cope with meat, not raw meat but meat which had been lying around for a while. The human digestive process is more toward the herbivorous so the flesh needs to have been processed in some way prior to consumption, either by cooking or rotting.
In the wild, humans would have been feasting off bits of carcass which had been lying in the sun for a few days. After the lions and hyenas had finished with it, along would come the vultures, canines and humans. The maggots would also have provided a tasty addition to the nutritional value of man's early meals, don't gag, it's how people came to be. It would have been a pretty rare smell, a long way from the Tesco pre packed chicken korma!:D

I have had siamese cats for a while now and one of my current little friends likes to eat raw potatoe peelings. He absolutely gives me a hard time when I am peeling them and his head is constantly dipped into the rubbish bag as a peel and they drop in.

One of my female cats sadly not with me anymore, preferred to eat crisps (potatoe chips) and she would often snatch them from our hand as we tried to eat them.

There is a cat in our neighborhood who comes in to hang out in our apartment sometimes. She doesn't eat meat either. I've tried beef, chicken, fish, pork, everything. Weird.

If a cat can do it, any animal can.
