Does any one have any thoughts on the ability of companies like Google, msn, and yahoo to control the internet ?
Becos i know a lot of people talk about in the future the internet being closely controlled, but isnt it already ?
I suggested people try alternatives like Gezzmo search, Dogpile,Ask, etc.. otherwise these companies will have too much power over the whole sytem..
...Becos they control who exists on their listings..
..if david ickes fourm was de-listed from the 3 major engines :then how could new people find the site ????

any thoughts people.??

More worrying is the fact that net neutrality is at threat from ISPs filtering content accessibility.

The search engines largely control your access to information, and can blacklist any web page that they dont like.
To discover information, you have to go through them. This is imense central power.
Its kind of like when the british controlled merchant trade.
If you didnt agree to their terms, you couldnt trade.

thanks for your reply. does anyone else have some thoughts?

I'm sure they know full well that paying to view sites will piss people off.. they'll probabaly use probelm reaction solution to make an excuse for it..

Google and msn are dodgy, but they are the best at what the do, unfortunately.

You could check out this thread FBI going dark (http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66874&highlight=dark) There's a youtube link in that thread "Privacy is Dead Get Over It" watch that the first parts cover what is behind googles plans. Filtering websites, is just a small part of the power they are trying to gain.

More worrying is the fact that net neutrality is at threat from ISPs filtering content accessibility.

Agreed the ISP's are the weakest link in the whole scenario! I think we should all start going commando, with wifi and set up our own public service.
The net is closing in and the web is more vulnerable than people think.
