Eighteen years ago John Taylor Gatto took the public education system by storm with the release of Dumbing Us Down (http://www.newsociety.com/bookid/3763) - an expose of the dangers of compulsory schooling.

Now he rocks the boat again, with the eagerly anticipated Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey Through the Dark World of Compulsory Schooling (http://www.newsociety.com/bookid/4012).

This radical work argues that the real function of the modern educational system is to render the masses manageable and to train the next generation for subservience to the state.

Citing examples such as Tania Aebi, a high-school dropout and the youngest woman to complete a single-handed circumnavigation of the world in a 26-foot sailboat, Gatto shows that to achieve true excellence one must escape the trap of modern education.

Both of those books look great. I like the fact that he is calling for open source education, this is something I've been thinking for a while.

The rise of the internet gives schools less and less purpose. Any one could learn more in a couple of hours on the net then a whole week at school.

My wife works as a teacher and even she is totally demoralized with the way the system works. They don't even teach music any more, and art lessons are few and far between.
Every lesson they plan has to checked by the head teacher.

No need for creativity just follow orders.

My son is due to start school in September and it scare the crap out of me.
The logical thing would be for my wife to teach him at home which we have considered and she would love to do.
But we simply cant afford for her to give up work at the moment as it looks like I might be getting a £4000 pay cut:mad:
They really do have most people by the balls

Time to put on my thinking hat a work on a master plan.:)

Yes, it certainly looks interesting. I wish I wasn't still in school, it really feels like a prison.

It's great more and more are waking up to the fact that mainstream schooling is not what we believe it to be and more are wanting to home school, great people are taking back their power.
