Numbers station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Numbers stations (or number stations) are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin. They generally broadcast artificially generated voices reading streams of numbers, words, letters (sometimes using a spelling alphabet), tunes or Morse code. They are in a wide variety of languages and the voices are usually women's, though sometimes men's or children's voices are used.

Evidence supports popular assumptions that the broadcasts are used to send messages to spies. This usage has not been publicly acknowledged by any government that may operate a numbers station, but in one case, Cuban numbers station espionage has been publicly prosecuted in a United States federal court.[1]

Numbers stations appear and disappear over time (although some follow regular schedules), and their overall activity has increased slightly since the early 1990s. This increase suggests that, as spy-related phenomena, they were not unique to the Cold War.

[edit] Suspected origins and use
According to the notes of The Conet Project,[2] numbers stations have been reported since World War I. If accurate, this would make numbers stations among the earliest radio broadcasts.

It has long been speculated, and was argued in court in one case, that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies working undercover.[3] According to this theory, the messages are encrypted with a one-time pad, to avoid any risk of decryption by the enemy. As evidence, numbers stations have changed details of their broadcasts or produced special, nonscheduled broadcasts coincident with extraordinary political events, such as the August Coup.[citation needed]

Number Stations are also acknowledged for espionage purposes in Robert Wallace and H. Keith Melton's Spycraft:[4]

The one-way voice link described a covert communications system that transmitted messages to an agent's unmodified shortwave radio using the high-frequency shortwave bands between 3 and 30 MHz at a predetermined time, date, and frequency contained in their communications plan. The transmissions were contained in a series of repeated random number sequences and could only be deciphered using the agent's one-time pad. If proper tradecraft was practiced and instructions were precisely followed, an OWVL transmission was considered unbreakable. [...] As long as the agent's cover could justify possessing a shortwave radio and he was not under technical surveillance, high-frequency OWVL was a secure and preferred system for the CIA during the Cold War (p. 438).

Others speculate that some of these stations may be related to illegal drug smuggling operations.[5] Unlike government stations, smugglers' stations would need to be lower powered and irregularly operated, to avoid location by triangulated direction finding, followed by government raids. However, numbers stations have transmitted with impunity for decades, so they are generally presumed to be operated or sponsored only by governments. Also, numbers station transmissions in the international shortwave bands typically require high levels of electric power that is unavailable to ranches, farms, or plantations in isolated drug-growing regions.

High frequency radio signals transmitted at relatively low power can travel around the world under ideal propagation conditions, which are affected by local RF noise levels, weather, season, and sunspots, and can then be received with a properly tuned antenna of adequate size, and a superb receiver. However, spies often have to work only with available hand held receivers, sometimes under difficult local conditions, and in all seasons and sunspot cycles.[6][7] Only very large transmitters, perhaps up to 500,000 watts, are guaranteed to get through to nearly any basement-dwelling spy, nearly any place on earth, nearly all of the time. Some governments may not need a numbers station with global coverage if they only send spies to nearby countries.

Although no broadcaster or government has acknowledged transmitting the numbers, a 1998 article in The Daily Telegraph quoted a spokesperson for the Department of Trade and Industry (the government department that, at that time, regulated radio broadcasting in the United Kingdom) as saying, "These [numbers stations] are what you suppose they are. People shouldn't be mystified by them. They are not for, shall we say, public consumption."[8]

It is believed that listening to numbers stations without permission in the UK is illegal under Section 48 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006.[citation needed]

Numbers stations are often given nicknames by enthusiasts, often reflecting some distinctive element of the station such as their interval signal. For example, the "Lincolnshire Poacher", formerly one of the best known numbers stations (generally thought to be run by MI6 as its transmissions have been traced to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus), played the first two bars of the folk song "The Lincolnshire Poacher" before each string of numbers. "Magnetic Fields" plays music from French electronic musician Jean Michel Jarre before and after each set of numbers. The "Atención" station begins its transmission with the Spanish word "ˇAtención!"

Although it is time-consuming and may require costly global travel to pinpoint the source of a radio transmission in the shortwave band, errors at the transmission site, radio direction-finding, and a knowledge of shortwave radio propagation have provided armchair detectives clues to some number station locations.

For example, the "Atención" station was originally presumed to be from Cuba, as a supposed error allowed Radio Habana Cuba to be carried on the frequency.[9] Whether the frequency of Radio Habana Cuba and the frequency of the "Atención" station merely interfered with each other or whether the operator of the station was listening to the radio and it accidentally ended up on the air is unclear. Circa 2000–2001, the United States has officially identified Atención as Cuban.

Also, several articles in the radio magazine Popular Communications published in the 1980s and early 1990s described hobbyists using portable radio direction-finding equipment to locate numbers stations in Florida and in the Warrenton, Virginia, area.[10] From the outside, they spotted the station's antenna inside a military facility. The station hunter speculated that the antenna's transmitter at the facility was connected by a telephone wire pair to a source of spoken numbers in the Washington, D.C., area. The author said the Federal Communications Commission would not comment on public inquiries about American territory numbers stations.

On some stations, tones can be heard in the background. It has been suggested that in such cases the voice may be an aid to tuning to the correct frequency, with the coded message being sent by modulating the tones, perhaps using a technology such as burst transmission.

The use of number stations as a method of espionage is discussed in Spycraft:[4]

The only item Penkovsky used that could properly be called advanced tradecraft was his 'agent-receive' communications through a one-way voice-link. These encoded messages, known as OWVL, were broadcast over shortwave frequencies at predetermined times from a CIA-operated transmitter in Western Europe. Penkovsky listened to these messages on a Panasonic radio — strings of numbers read in a dispassionate voice — and then decoded them using a one-time pad. (p. 37)

[edit] The Atención spy case evidence
Atención of Cuba became the world's first numbers station to be officially and publicly accused of transmitting to spies. It was the centerpiece of a United States federal court espionage trial following the arrest of the Wasp Network of Cuban spies in 1998. The U.S. prosecutors claimed the accused were writing down number codes received from Atención, using Sony hand-held shortwave receivers, and typing the numbers into laptop computers to decode spying instructions. The FBI testified that they had entered a spy's apartment in 1995, and copied the computer decryption program for the Atención numbers code. They used it to decode Atención spy messages, which the prosecutors unveiled in court.

United States government evidence included the following three examples of decoded Atención messages.[11] (Not reported whether the original clear texts were in Spanish, although the phrasing of "Day of the Woman" would indicate so.):

"prioritize and continue to strengthen friendship with Joe and Dennis" [68 characters]
"Under no circumstances should [agents] German nor Castor fly with BTTR or another organization on days 24, 25, 26, and 27." [112 characters] (BTTR is the anti-Castro airborne group Brothers to the Rescue)
"Congratulate all the female comrades for International Day of the Woman." [71 characters] (Probably a simple greeting for March 8, International Women's Day)
At the rate of one spoken number per character per second, each of these sentences takes a minute or more to transmit.

The moderator of an e-mail list for global numbers station hobbyists claimed "Someone on the Spooks list had already cracked the code for a repeated transmission [from Havana to Miami] if it was received garbled." Such code-breaking is possible if a one-time pad decoding key is used more than once.[12]

[edit] Formats
Generally, numbers stations follow a basic format, although there are many differences in details between stations. Transmissions usually begin on the hour or half-hour.

The prelude or introduction of a transmission (from which stations' informal nicknames are often derived) includes some kind of identifier, either for the station itself and/or for the intended recipient. This can take the form of numeric or radio-alphabet "code names" (e.g. "Charlie India Oscar", "250 250 250"), characteristic phrases (e.g. "ˇAtención!", "1234567890"), and sometimes musical or electronic sounds (e.g. "The Lincolnshire Poacher", "Magnetic Fields"). Sometimes, as in the case of the Israeli radio-alphabet stations, the prelude can also signify the nature or priority of the message to follow (e.g.(hypothetically) "Charlie India Oscar-2", indicating that no message follows). Often the prelude repeats for a period before the body of the message begins.

There is usually an announcement of the number of number-groups in the message, then the groups are recited. Groups are usually either four or five digits or radio-alphabet letters. The groups are typically repeated, either by reading each group twice, or by repeating the entire message as a whole.

Some stations send more than one message during a transmission. In this case, some or all of the above process is repeated, with different contents.

Finally, after all the messages have been sent, the station will sign off in some characteristic fashion. Usually it will simply be some form of the word "end" in whatever language the station uses (e.g. "end of message, end of transmission"; "Ende"; "fini"; "final"; "konets"). Some stations, especially those thought to originate from the former Soviet Union, end with a series of zeros, e.g. "000 000"; others end with music or other sundry sounds.

Due to the secretive nature of the messages, the cryptographic function employed by particular stations is not publicly known, except in one or possibly two cases.[13] It is assumed that most stations use a one-time pad that would make the contents of these number groups indistinguishable from randomly generated numbers or digits. In the definitely known case, the former state of West Germany did use a one-time pad for numbers transmissions.[14]

[edit] Transmission technology
Although few numbers stations have been tracked down by location, the technology used to transmit the numbers has historically been clear — stock shortwave transmitters using powers from 10 kW to 100 kW.

Amplitude modulated (AM) transmitters with optionally variable frequency, using class-C power output stages with plate modulation, are the workhorses of international shortwave broadcasting, including numbers stations.

Application of spectrum analysis to number station signals has revealed the presence of data bursts, RTTY-modulated subcarriers, phase-shifted carriers, and other unusual transmitter modulations like polytones.[15] (RTTY-modulated subcarriers were also present on some U.S. commercial radio transmissions during the Cold War.[16])

The frequently reported use of high tech modulations like data bursts, in combination or sequence with spoken numbers, suggest transmissions for differing intelligence operations.[17]

For spies in the field, low tech spoken number transmissions continue to have advantages in the 21st century. High tech data receiving equipment is difficult to obtain,[18] and being caught with more than a civilian shortwave news radio could be construed as evidence of spying. Yet governments' embassies, aircraft, and ships at sea are known to possess complex receiving equipment that could make regular use of encrypted data transmissions from the home country. These probably include charts and photos that require more transmitted data than can be sent efficiently using spoken numbers.

[edit] The USSR and superpower number stations
During the Cold War there was substantial evidence that the USSR may have used 500 kW transmitters on the eastern side of the Urals to reach agents in Western Europe, North Africa, and possibly North America.
HF direction finding evidence that was collected by many different sets of amateurs in Europe, Africa, and the Americas during the Cold War substantiates number stations broadcasting from the East of the Urals.
Existing USSR technical literature shows that the USSR pioneered HRS 8/8/1 directional HF antennas for shortwave news and information broadcasting in the late 1960s–mid 1970s. Thus it is possible that lower transmitter powers (like 100 kW) were used in the 1980s — the later part of the Cold War.
Superpower number station broadcasting from the USSR cannot be concretely proven to this day: The USSR jammed HF broadcasts from the west making many HF direction finding attempts nearly impossible. The HF bands in the European region were very crowded during most of the Cold War making good HF direction finding problematic.

[edit] Documented instances of interference to broadcasts
The North Korean propaganda station Voice of Korea began to broadcast on the Lincolnshire Poacher's former frequency, 11545 kHz, in 2006, possibly to deliberately interfere with its propagation. This clash can be viewed in video format. The apparent target zone for the Lincolnshire Poacher signals originating in Cyprus was the Middle East, not the Far East which is covered by its sister station Cherry Ripe.

On 27 September 2006, amateur radio transmissions in the 30 m band were affected by the E7 "Russian Man" number station at 1740 UTC. The interference can be heard here.

The late "Havana Moon" reported in his own publication "The Numbers Factsheet" in October 1990 that "one particularly dangerous station has been interfering with air to ground traffic on 6577 kHz, a frequency allocated to international aeronautical communications in the busy Caribbean sector". "On at least one monitored transmission, the air traffic controller at ARINC moved the pilot to an alternate frequency as the numbers transmission was totally blocking the frequency from effective use".

A station operated by the West German BND agency whose callsign was "Hotel Kilo" used to transmit on 9450 kHz, interfering with Radio Moscow (now The Voice of Russia) which used the same frequency. A tape recording of the interference was submitted to Radio Moscow which prompted this response.

SW Radio Africa transmits from Meyerton, South Africa, on 4880 kHz and is the "Independent Voice of Zimbabwe". A video of the Mossad E10 station "Uniform Lima X-Ray" interfering with the African station.

The religious station WYFR transmits from Okeechobee, Florida, USA, on 6855 kHz. It is regularly affected by the Cuban Spanish number station "V2". A video shows the V2 interfering with the American station.

A BBC frequency, 7325 kHz, has also been used. This prompted a letter to the BBC from a listener in Andorra. She wrote to the World Service "Waveguide" program complaining that her listening had been spoiled by a female voice reading out numbers in English and she asked the announcer what this interference was. The BBC presenter laughed at the suggestion of spy activity. He had consulted the experts at Bush House (BBC headquarters) who declared that the voice was reading out nothing more sinister than snowfall figures for the ski-slopes near the listener's home. With more research into this case, short wave enthusiasts are fairly sure that this was a numbers station being broadcast on a random frequency.[19] The likelihood of the broadcast being snow readings is in doubt because it would have been illegal to broadcast on an already used frequency.

Radio Ukraine International uses 9950 kHz in the 31 metre band. At 1610 UTC on Thursday 22 November 2007, the powerful S06 Russian number station transmitted a call up of "425". You can see a video of this.

Radio Mediterranee Int. (Medi 1) transmits on 9575 kHz from Nador, Morocco. On 11 September 2008, the English language number station E11a sent a message on 9576 kHz, which was hidden in the upper sideband of the Moroccan station. You can view the interference caused in this video clip.

[edit] Attempted jamming of number stations
Numbers station transmissions have often been the target of jamming attempts. Despite this targeting, many number stations continue to broadcast unhindered. Several theories exist that aid in explaining the inability to effectively jam the transmissions. With only a finite number of jamming transmitters available at any given time, it may be more efficient to block clandestine stations intended for a large audience rather than a message intended for a single person. Another theory is that there may be a "gentlemen's agreement" in place; i.e. "we won't jam yours if you don't jam ours". In addition, the haphazard nature of some stations, e.g. not having a fixed schedule or frequency, also makes jamming more difficult because the broadcast may go undetected.

Historical examples of jamming:

The E10 YHF being jammed by the mysterious "Chinese Music Station". This jammer has been dubbed the Chinese Fire Dragon Jammer and purportedly comes from Hainan Island which is located in the Gulf of Tonkin and is a part of the People's Republic of China.[20]
The E3 Lincolnshire Poacher station was at one time in the early 1990s the target for "bubble" or "warble" jammers. In this example, the jammer appears to be in some difficulty.
The E5 CIA station dubbed "Cynthia" by number station monitors has also been the target of the same type of jamming as the above example.
On 2 September 2008 at 1700 UTC on 9130 kHz, the E10 Mossad station EZI 1 was being jammed whereas its parallel frequency of 6840 kHz was in the clear.

[edit] Classification
Although most number stations have various nicknames which usually describe some aspect of the station itself, the ENIGMA 2000 number stations monitoring group has assigned a code to each known station, this takes the form of a letter followed by a number (or, in the case of some "X" stations, more letters). The letter indicates the language used by the station in question:

E indicates a station broadcasting in English.
G indicates a station broadcasting in German.
S indicates a station broadcasting in a Slavic language.
V indicates all other languages.
M is a station broadcasting in Morse Code.
X indicates all other transmissions such as polytones in addition to some unexplained broadcasts which may not actually be numbers stations.
T indicates a station broadcasting in an unknown language.
For example, the well known, defunct Lincolnshire Poacher station has the designation E3 (or E03), the Cuban "Atencion" station has designation V2 (or V02). The most recent station to be given a designation is E27, which was a station heard broadcasting on several occasions in late 2006 and early 2007.

Some stations have also been stripped of their designation if they are discovered not to be a numbers station- this was the case for E22 which was discovered in 2005 to be test transmissions for All India Radio.

The West German film Der Westen Leuchtet shows an agent called Harald Liebe receiving a number station transmission via a Sony ICF-7800 radio. He is then shown decoding the message using his one-time pad.[21]

The poem Alarm of the Polish poet Antoni Słonimski, describes the war raid of Warsaw in September 1939. The fragment including authentic radio message:

"UWAGA! Uwaga! Przeszedł!
Koma trzy!"
Ktoś biegnie po schodach.
Trzasnęły gdzieś drzwi.
Ze zgiełku i wrzawy
Dźwięk jeden wybucha rośnie,
Kołuje jękliwie,
Głos syren - w oktawy
Opada - i wznosi się jęk:
"Ogłaszam alarm dla miasta Warszawy!"

Translated by Stefan Golston:

"Attention! Attention! He passed by!
Comma three!"
Somebody runs on the stairs,
Door slammed somewhere,
One sound of the tumult and uproar
Bursts out, timidly rolls, grows,
Sound of sirens - in octave
Subsides - and rises the moan:
"Announcing alarm for the city of Warsaw!"

The thing I found with number stations is, the more you look into it the more insane it can be!

some people say the the numbers mean something like:

Number station sends: 2,7,6,3,

Book 2

Page 7

line 6

3rd word along that line= The

The only people that can crack this code is the sender and the person its ment for as they will have the same book.

A simple idea to get secret messages across the world.

Why not use a laptop? as its 2009!

Well how out of place would you look if you were a spy in Cuba or Russia?

You wont look out of place with a old radio....:D

This usage has not been publicly acknowledged by any government that may operate a numbers station, but in one case, Cuban numbers station espionage has been publicly prosecuted in a United States federal court.

The book "Spy Catcher" by Peter Wright was banned for sale in the UK by the Thatcher government but you can still get copies around and about. I highly recommend it as it's a true and very interesting book. Peter Wright was an MI5 scientist who specialsed in radio signals intellegence and counter espionage during the height of the Cold War and the book documents his career in MI5 and many cases he was involved in and other information the Thatcher government didn't want in the public domain for obvious reasons ;)

Most governments communicated with their Embassies and spies in other countries using these type of broadcasts and some probably still do. These types of broadcast were encrypted messages which required a one-time cypher book (or other means) usually smuggled in diplomatic bags to the spy or embassy staff who were the message recipients. The one-time cypher books made the messages almost impossible to crack without having a physical copy of the book.

There were constant espionage "wars" going on to detect, intercept, de-cypher or attempt to locate the recipients of such messages using various radio technologies.

It seems strange that such broadcasts are still being used today as I am sure most spy networks or embassy communications would be more advanced by now. Maybe they're drug or criminal organisation communications.

I don't know about anyone else, but it almost made me sick to my stomach?

Listening to certain numbers being read over and over... I don't know. The sequence of the numbers itself just feels wrong.

I think this would be an acceptable form of torture for someone. Strap them down and make them listen to this stuff. They will hate numbers and go insane from it.

Years ago I joined a forum for short wave.

And spoke to a guy who done alot of stuff, he was called the Cammnder Bunny.

He used this name Rodent Revolution WBNY Radio Bunny

Rodent Revolution - WBNY
This station has been noted several times. It makes transmissions on 6950 kHz AM, generally during the local evening hours on the US east coast. Reception has generally been poor.
Transmissions consist of a somewhat distorted voice reading off a series of numbers. They usually open and close with the song "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. The song "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" has also been heard.

Loggings:

Here is a URL to a recording of the first transmission:

http://www.cvni.net/mp3/WBNY.mp3 (http://www.cvni.net/mp3/WBNY.mp3)

Here is the ciphertext of the first transmission, 85 numbers:

12 2 7 12 13
18 14 1 8 4
18 12 6 14 14
9 5 20 1 12
13 5 8 21 4
2 2 7 8 8

13 4 12 19 5
12 19 4 18 12
2 2 11 20 13
13 23 14 20 19

Derek Glidden came up with this solution:
Assign a letter to each number, 1=A, 2=B, etc. This produces:

lbglm rnahd rlfnn ietal mehud bbghh iwnth lsseh rohjd lbjlq qnsru hfnsg qnafl mdlse lsdrl bbktm mwnts

Using frequency analysis, guesses can be made to the most commonly used letters, a further guesses can weed out the remaining letters. The result is:

al fansome is a good human he will feed you eat the special carrots we got from gania that is all bunny out

There does appear to be one typo - gania should be ganja. This means that the wrong number was sent, a 4 was sent when probably a 3 or 24 should have been sent.

Pat Murphy copied a transmission on 6950 AM 2235-2245 utc on Sept 1, 2002, sio 444:
Peter Cottontail by Gene Autry/ OM said he was Melvin Mouse, Commander of the FRN destruction
forces of the rodent revolution, that they had destroyed the FRN and here was todays secret
message.Ę He repeated the message three times then signed off. Here are the numbers that I heard.

21 14 14 9 23 15 12 17 17 1 20 18 19 9 4 8 5 8 17 8 4 18 5 14 20 18 8 then he said Special
Instructions twice and 2 12 19 34 dot 5710 2 14 13 83 dot 4824

Again the rodent revolution took credit for shutting down the FRN and said to listen for
further instructions, played Peter Cottontail by Gene Autry and signed off.

Two messages have been decoded so far, using a simple substitution cipher. Using the same key, the above first message works out to:
WOODYPARRMUSTDIEHEREISHOUSE
Which I would take as:
WOODY PARR MUST DIE HERE IS HOUSE
Special instructions decode as:
LAT 34.5710 LON 83.4824
Obviously this is someone's idea of a joke, though in very poor taste.

It looks like the end of the message was cut off?

APE HUMANS MUST BE STOPPED AL F[A]NSOME CHECK TIRE PRESSURE
RODENTS RULE YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME TRY ING TO DECODE THIS STO[U?]PID HUMAN
RODENT REVOL[U]TION WILL WIN GO F*CK YOURS[E]LF

The following was posted on the FRN by Commander Bunny:
The Rodent Revolution was formed in the 1980's by a coalition of members from every rodent family. Mice, Squirrels, beavers, shrews and the most intelligent of the group, the Rabbits. Our goal is to overthrow our oppressers, the Ape-Humans who drool on themselves, listen to shortwave and spend most free moments wanking their willies. We have, in collaboration with the CIA been using mind control methods to confuse and baffle the humans since 1985. Thus the inability to clearly hear our 50,000-watt transmission last night. With the subliminal message that was contained in the numbers transmission, we very easily convinced the Ape-Humans that there was static and a poor signal. You may think this is a joke, yet if you think about all the Used Car Salesmen who make a good living, its clear that you Ape-Humans are easily misled and confused. Why else would you elect another Bush?
Our Secret Numbers transmissions are for the millions of Rodents to stay in communication with each other and for us to issue orders from Commander Bunny to the troops. We are currently gnawing away at the fiber optic lines the cable companies have been installing all over the country. You'll pay attention to the revolution when you can't get your HBO. Any attempt to decode this secret transmission will only lead to more confusion on your part, as witnessed by the poster who claimed he had decoded it. While many of our transmissions are in fact about Al Fansome, they are not about him holding anything. Fansome is one of our Ape-Human operatives who, by way of mind control, does our bidding. Often for giggles we will send him messages late at night to go out and check his tire pressure. We used this same kind of mind control on Pat Robertson in the late 1980's and made him think he could be President. What a maroon. We broadcast at least once a year through WBNY Radio to update Ape-Humans on how much time they have left before the Rodent Rule the Earth. For more information you'll need to insert a very large carrot into the floppy drive of your computer now.

Commander Bunny is a shortwave pirate radio operator that has been active for many years. He claims to have first started broadcasting on shortwave sometime in the 1960s. Commander Bunny is responsible for various broadcasts using a general theme of Rodent Revolution, usually via a station that identifies itself as WBNY. On occasion, he warns all listeners to beware of low Tire Pressure. He has used various broadcast names, modes and formats over the years. Commander Bunny sometimes relays programming originated by other pirates.

In 2007, Commander Bunny announced that he was entering the field of candidates for the 2008 election of the President of the United States. Shortly thereafter, he announced that pirate operator Kracker had been chosen as his Vice Presidential running mate. Since the campaign began, frequent announcements of Commander Bunny For President T-shirts and bumper stickers have been heard on WBNY and other stations.

Interview with Commander Bunny
This month, I managed to catch up with Commander Bunny of the WBNY(email address of rodentrevolutionhq@yahoo.com). He was too busy with his 2008 US Presidential campaign to write about WBNY. In spite of my being an annoying "monkey " (his term for me), he allowed me to submit a baker's dozen questions on WBNY, his presidential campaign and his efforts with WBNY. The questions are mine and responses are Commander Bunny's. The responses are not the opinion of CIDX or myself. There that should keep the lawyers happy. Here are the questions and answers for your enjoyment and edification:

Question 1

When did WBNY start broadcasting? I think recently it celebrated

twenty-five years as a broadcaster.

Answer: 42 YEARS. It was 1965, Easter, the The Rodents had been talking about organizing and overthrowing the monkeys for many years, but now we had a brand new Johnson Viking with crystals for 7415 - 6025 and a couple other frequencies. Our first "Call to Arms" was broadcast that year at Easter. 17 monkeys heard it, but the entire rodent nation heard it an started to mobilize.

Question 2

What is the current transmitter equipment used (transmitter, power

out, antenna type, etc.)?

Answer: We have used many different types of transmitters over the years and so many configurations of antenna's that it would take a book to describe them. We currently use a Icom MK-700 and Icom-735 both with modified power supplies and mod-transformers as our main shortwave transmitters. We always have a cut-to-frequency dipole up 50' and right now are using a Butternut Vertical that does very well. There is one one very important transmitter that we have been using for the past couple of years. Bill O. RIghts of Radio Free Speech, who has done more than a thousand transmissions with his original "Grenade" transmitter has been letting us use it. We have done dozens of broadcasts with it, but it is a piece of pirate history and we do use it on occassion. Bill has been a good friend to WBNY and the Rodent Revolution. When we eventually overthrow the monkeys, he will hold a place of power and honor.

Question 3

Most Free Radio stations play music or entertainment. WBNY generally acts as the Voice of the Rodent Revolution. Music is played. But, in past, WBNY has sent messages that used a double substitution cipher to its agents in the field. Do you consider WBNY to be a true American clandestine station?

Answer: No question and clearly you are a monkey who has an IQ above single digits (unusual for shortwave listeners) (I mean come on, look at WWCR!). But for some reason the ClandestineGeeks has dismissed us, as not being worthy of their attention. But then we are dealing with monkeys here, so there is no accounting for taste or choice. I mean look at Chris Smolinski for God's sake! How long can you wear a trench coat and not look like a pervert? However, how we are catagorized is not as important as our message.

Question 4

WBNY has use technology to get it message out, example slow scan TV signals for identification. Is WBNY considering using a digital mode (DRM,etc)for broadcasting?

Answer:

We have used RTTY, SSTV, Morse Code, ARQ6-90, FEC-S, AM, FM and of course the Side Band modes. But the most important part of our AM, FM and Side Band transmissions are the subliminal mind control messsages we send out to monkeys and make them do things for us. They have worked brilliantly! Our bank accounts are overflowing with money for the revolution. The monkeys just send us money everytime we tell them to! Its almost as good as being a government, only monkeys have no memory of the act. To answer you question directly, if DRM receiving technology becomes common place we'll use it. In my opinion (and that's the only one that really counts) digital AM, FM and DRM are the products of bored monkey engineers who cooked this up with no idea of what to do with it. The main drawback to digital AM and FM is that even dumb monkeys are not going to go out and buy a brand new receiver for $300 or $400 to hear the same commercial crap they can hear for free on their car radios. There is no question that ape-human monkeys are dumb, but even I know they aren't that dumb.

Question 5

Do you like other Free Radio operators use the FRN Vines web page (www.frn.net/vines) for ACE Loggings to see how listeners are getting your broadcasts?

Answer: Much like watching ants in one of those "Ant Colony" kits you buy at the hobby shop, I enjoy watching the monkeys interact on the FRN.

Question 6

With your revolutionary zeal, have the authorities approached you about your activities? Have there been any close encounters of the white van type?

Answer: White Van or not, they are still monkeys and rabbit brain power has kept us from any close encounters and to be honest, you won't see the federal government suit types, clomping into a carrot patch to catch a rabbit!

Question 7

Recently, an European web page (Alfa Lima) published that you were a human whose voice was alternated by digital signal processing to sound like a rodent. Do you think was an attempt to undermine your unannounced presidential campaign?

Answer: No question. What a low life monkey-boy to try to make me a human! This is a monkey who claims to be a pirate enthusiast, yet undermines other pirates. How low is that? The is no bottom to the barrel of dirty tricks that monkeys will stoop to, when it comes to hurting others. As your President, I will bomb or lock up any monkeys that act in this manner.

Question 8

In response to that statement, Radio Jamba arose to correct the disinformation of the Alfa Lima web site. Is Radio Jamba under the control of the Rodent Revolution?

Answer: Radio Jamba International is a free thinking group of monkeys, who honestly are a cut above the rest of you apes. WBNY has established a nice network of relays amongst a surprising number of pirate operators. We all relay each others programs. Jamba is one of them, but more importantly, has shown me that there are monkeys amongst you, that are worth saving. There are actually monkeys amongst you that are smart enough not to yak on the cell phone while you attempt to steer a 4,000 pound piece of steel down a highway at 50 kph. Plus the subliminal messages have worked especially well on these subjects.

Question 9

Kracker of Kracker Radio has stated that he operates Radio Jamba on WBCQ. Is Kracker like Al Fansome in the employ of the Rodent Revolution?

Answer: Kracker is a friend of the Rodent Revolution! He does so of his own free will and has done so out of the bad dreams he has over the mistreatment of rodents, worldwide. On the other hand, Al Fansome is a bad dream!

Question 10

If your presidential campaign is successful, will you have the FCC set up a license free shortwave band for Free Radio broadcasters or extend the a low power shortwave broadcasting license with WBNY receiving the first license?

Answer: The FCC and IRS will be the first to be cut from government. I know this will burden society, as these monkeys who work for these agencies have no real work skills, and will most likely break into your homes, while you are at work and steal your cable boxes, but hard choices must be made. In RR (Rodent Rule) the big rabbits get the carrots and the babes. It will be the same under my Adminstration. Big transmitter gets the frequency. While I understand that by cutting monkey government, it will fill the streets with very low IQ monkeys, with no work skills, we do have enough cages and tire swings to meet the demand. These government monkeys need to be locked in cages and isolated from normal monkeys.

Question 11

On to your presidential campaign, is true that you and Hillary Clinton are discussing the possibility of you being VEEP on her ticket?

Answer: NO! I can't think of a dumber monkey than Hillary. Plus my sstv images of her with Saddam and Osama are damning.

Question 12

Can you confirm either of these statements about you from Hillary?

Of course, I (Hillary sic) can work with Commander Bunny. His being a bunny will have no affect on our relations. I live with Bill for years and he acts like a rabbit.

or

I (Hillary sic) need to have Commander Bunny on the ticket. He will be my good luck charm.

Answer: There is no accounting for anything that monkey Hillary says and it would depend on which side of her face, she said it out of. I don't think there is any question that Monkey Hillary will say anything to get elected. Clearly she see's the mass appeal of Commander Bunny and wants to be associated with it, but do not be fooled monkey-boy, she is evil incarnate!

Question 13

It is has been attributed that you and WBNY broadcasts are a form of mind control. Is this how you have manage to get so many Free Radio operators to endorse you campaign? Or, do you have pictures of them doing naughty things with rodents?

Answer: My subliminal messages are the way we raise money to fund the Rodent Revolution and get monkeys to buy t-shirts and bumper stickers. By the way you can buy the COMMANDER BUNNY FOR PRESIDENT T-SHIRTS and BUMPER STICKERS on EBAY. Just type in COMMANDER BUNNY in the search engine. I don't have any photo's of any operator doing anything "naughty" (shame on you, what are you thinking?) with rodents, but have DVD's of Al Fansome spanking his monkey, while listening to Poet drone on about 40-year old music.

Finally, just remember to check your tire pressure, especially if the Commander does win. I am sure it will a major part of his energy program.
