Been working out for a while now and was on whey protein and sometimes creatine. Have been considering taking Creatine on a more full time basis, as it really seemed to help - anyone any advice or past experience on protein or creatine.

I would defintely say you're on the right path there mate. Creatine helps improve the ADP -> ATP conversion, giving you more energy to rep out a set or lift a heavier weight & also improves water and glycogen retention (that fuller look). But you no doubt knew that.
If I might suggest also a Glutamine supplement. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue & also found in the immune system. It becomes depleted after a heavy workout and if it isn't restored, it can lead to muscle breakdown.
Also don't neglect high quality carbohydrates, which is your body's main form of energy. If you can find a high quality carb supplement, I would get it. I noticed after not even 2 weeks of using my supplement, an increase in size & strength. What happens is the carbs will induce a high insulin spike, insulin being one of the most anabolic hormone in the human body. The pancreas secretes insulin when blood sugar levels rise. Being anabolic, insulin will drive nutrients from the bloodstream into muscle cells. Using a high quality supplement (or food source, of course), it will dramatically increase uptake of these proteins, and create an anabolic environment to help with muscle growth and recovery.
In closing, I would probably use : protein, creatine pre-workout. And protein, creatine, glutamine & a carb supplement post-workout all mixed in one. You only need small amounts of Creatine-gluatmine & carbs (no more than 1 or 2 tablespoons).
Personally, I see results. I suppose opinions and other methods will differ, of course.
Hope this helps

thanks for this. I found the creatine had an almost instant impact and when i stopped i felt a lot weaker - could possibly have been some kind of placebo affect though

Creatine is not placebo. I had a mate who took creatine to get him through 12 hour shifts at work. I also know people who have beaten chronic fatigue syndrome by taking creatine. If you take creatine and glutamine all the better.
Peace:)

Just remember that taking creatine long term may stop your bodies natural production of it. you could look into cycling it and see what you think works best for you.
Creatine works for most, a small percentage are non responders but you'll soon figure out if you fall into that bracket.
Also remember if you want to get big you have to eat big, supplements alone won't get you the results you want if your diets not up to scratch.

Neither of these things are good for your body.
If you dont have big muscles then so what, just work out to your bodies capacity, why increase the volume of water in your muscles. I have had mates who now have big fat heads, (fat formed around their neck and even the sides of their heads) from creatine.
My little brother was taking protien, went for a sexual helath test and was told he had HIV, all due to the amount pf protien in his system.
IMO these supplements are just as bad a steriods.

:eek:That's a new one on me, I've never heard of whey causing HIV before. In fact there's lots of articles saying that it can be used to reverse its effects.
Obviously if your taking anything like this you should up your water intake to prevent over stressing your kidneys but the worst thing I've ever had was bright yellow pee when I used to over do it.
Still you learn something new everyday.

both of these are found naturally in food so dont think they are that dangerous. Would cost me a fortune to eat that much food though - these supplement them.
Plus as someone else the food we eat from supermarkets etc. arent going to be great :(

Do you have information on that?

Maybe taking creatine for the next 20 years every day may stop your body producing it. If your taking creatine for a couple of months then miss a week or two you dont need to worry about this.
You can feel creatine working after a few days .You feel that spring in your feet when you jump out of bed.
Peace:)

Do you have information on that?
Like any supplement that also occurs naturally a high intake over a prolonged period runs the risk of suppressing your bodies ability to produce it.
The limit of creatine that skeletal muscle can hold is around 150-160 mmol/kg of "dry" muscle, above this level studies have shown a decrease in the level of the synthesis of the creatine transporters.
You should try to strike a balance between supplementing and letting your body do the work.
Try to use creatine over 2 to 3 months at a time and take 4 weeks off between cycles. At least this way when you stop for what ever reason you don't get a drop off before your body can take up the slack.
However all this being said I still think it's one of the most valuable supplements out there, not only for bodybuilding but in everyday life and everyone's different so trial and error is the best way to see what works for you.

Thanks for that, themime. Incidentally, some people consider creatine to be a nootropic, meaning it enhances congnition.

My Husband is a powerlifter and he says that you should only take creatine one month in three because it will overload your liver and it wont really give you any benefits taking it any more than that.

Horses for courses really, if you try creatine for a month and then take one off you'll notice a difference. Personally I do 2 on, 1 to 2 off but that was only through trail and error and an aversion to peeing away money.

With Creatine Ethyl Ester, there is no need to worry about a pattern of on/off or loading/maintenance.
Just take it before every workout and you will notice the effects from the first session.

Doesn't look like a bad price either considering it's for 240 tablets.

I doubt the whey actually gave him HIV, more likely the large amount of foreign protein caused an immune response that resulted in a false positive on the test. The test doesn't actually look for viruses, just antibodies. There's a good chance that if he went back and got tested again, he'd show up as HIV negative.

I think creatine in a powder form, rather than supplements, is supposed to be better as it will be easier for the body to absorb.

isnt the powder just in a gelatine casing though for the pills? I would rather have 50 pills than drink water mixed with stuff - makes my gag

Yup but in this case the pills are probably better for your tooth enamel.:)
