View Full Version : All these bands reforming

Spandau Ballet recently. Michael Jackson back on the cash trail. Heard Simon & Garfunkel are back on tour this year too, as are Crosby, Stills & Nash. The Police tour was fanbloodytastic. Even Zeppelin did one gig.
But... is this a money-related coincidence or are musicians and people of art aware time is running out for them to do these things?
You forgot to mention Ringo and McCartney's recent get together. :)
On that occasion, apparently they were plugging transcendental meditation.

Deep Purple haven't stopped:)
A bit of both. Performing is like a adrenalin rush so it's hard to give up and there is a market for them to tap into. Plus their music is great. Beat's todays hiphop. Sorry hip hoppers.:)

With the shift in consciousness that is happening right now, I think that their songs will provoke more thought than they did maybe the first time around. So that's good :)

I stopped watching Mtv and Vh1 many months ago.
I only listen to Lounge/Chillout/Downtempo music anyway,
pop 'music' makes me want to puke all over it.

The Smiths
Stone Roses
The Jam (with Weller)
I'm glad they've not reformed. I was pretty gutted when the Sex Pistols reformed, the one band that should never rejoin the rock n roll circus they so incisively mocked first time round. One 'advantage' of Strummer dying is that the Clash will never parade their receding hairlines and middle aged spreads around a stage.
I heard a Radio 2 DJ saying that 'it's just pop music' and they shouldn't be so precious, what bollocks.

:D I used to listen to some of that stuff the OP mentioned and Deep Purple used to enjoy some of their songs but heard it all too much and have developed different tastes in music since. Mostly instrumentals stuff these days. BTW the Pentangle reformed the other year too. The Huntress is one of their best songs IMO. She has an amazing voice.

The Specials have also got back together, without their founder member Jerry Dammers. I saw them twice in their heyday but I haven't bought a ticket this time. It was never on the cards (they split very acrimoniously), but apparently their lead singer had a NDE and it made him re-consider his life and what the band meant to him. Also, they didn't make a lot of loot first time round, so if they can make a bit now, more power to their collective elbow. Another thing is that lots of contemporary bands were either covering their songs or mentioning their influence (Hard Fi, Amy Winehouse, The Enemy, Lily Allen, Kasabian)
I see this 'reunion' as an outgrowth of the whole tribute band thing. I'm not really into pure nostalgia that doesn't take into account the present day.
In their case, songs like Ghost Town are very relevant to the present. Saying that, one of the band was seriously BIGGING UP Obama during the election. Hmm. Almost makes me wanna break into a chorus of 'No More Heroes'.

Reunions are ace.
It's nothing new, been happening for years.
Faith no more are back together.
Best reunion ever was Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith rejoining Iron Maiden in 1999.
Another great one was Pink Floyd on stage at live 8

I have no problem with some groups as their probably skint due to horrendous record companies , managers , agents and accountants sticking their dirty mitts in the artists pie. They are exploited from ball one.
As for the likes of the police etc sting is just greedy , the other two needed a pension. Lets face it royalties from the Equaliser theme will not feed stewart copeland in his old age.
I'd like to see an exchange program where we vote in old bands and get to dump established ones who've played safe for years. Like U2 !!

I think a lot of these bands are getting back together to make money, money they didn't or couldn't make when they were together the first time around. Their fans are now older, with more disposable income so their tours can charge silly money for tickets and t-shirts and they can make a few quid for themselves in their old age - who can blame them?
I wish Robert Plant would get off his fucking high horse and commit to a longer tour with Zepp mind you - I think it's mainly due to his voice not being up to it any more - he says it's for reasons of integrity, I think he fibs! :D

I went to the 'final' Smashing Pumpkins tour - it was amazing - only to have them get back together and produce a pile o shite album. It ruins the memories when bands do this.
Now Blur have got back together which I was initially hugely excited about but now, in my heart of hearts, I know i'm gonna be watching a bunch of forty year olds trying to recapture the glory of their mid-twenties and failing miserably.

What else are they going to do?
Their solo careers are all laughable, they struggle to get fully hard anymore, the golf game's gone to shit, their kids all hate them and the wife wants them out of the fucking house more often. Then along comes an offer to make a truckload of money robotically ploughing through soulless renditions of their tired old back catalogues to screaming hordes of drunken middle-aged sluts every night.
This is what's commonly referred to in the industry as a 'no-brainer.'

Musicians have always done this. "Getting back together" or the "reunion tour" is always a huge money maker.
Nothing new here, except for maybe the higher number of people doing it, because there are more music celebrities over the past 40 years than ever, and it's been on an upward trend.

It is likely that music today is just as shit or as good as the music we listened to when we were kids only times have changed and we haven't. I remember my mum saying "God she's listening to that Blockhead again," "It's Radiohead, mum," "Well, whoever they are it's a bloody dirge." :D
There are great bands/artists today.....but not many (Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, Bat For Lashes, Interpol, Bright Eye's, well i like them at least)
It seemed that during the 90’s, there was a significant acceleration of creativity in rock music back then. Every year or so, a new band would appear and break entirely new ground. Today, it doesn’t seem to happen like that anymore.
Plus the music back then seemed more raw, honest and personal and less about being a rock star and getting indie cred.
It was also the music parents were concerned about. :D
So yeah, i like the 90’s because the attitude back then seemed much different.
The rock scene/culture back then was very distinctive, very separate from the pop scene. I think it started changing when Limp Bizscuit, Nu metal, Creed and all these other horrible acts came along and turned everything into a big parody.
It hasint recovered much since.....

in many cases,
when all the money has shamelessly been spent to unnecessary luxuary,
it's time to sing the same songs as they did years before
other bands do it for the attention/fame,
and other bands really love their own music and love performing again :)

I'm with matt delooze on this as regards psychic vampirism.
Saw the "police" on their reunion tour whilst on mushrooms and
their attempt with blatant symbolism and outrageously apparent *subliminals* during their 70 minutes set to "harvest" the energy
was in no way subtle.
Back in the 70's i never once considered the *evil* aspect of rock music,
as regards to TPTB and their influence, subliminally, on the unsuspecting youth of the day. Now, viewed through a different set of goggles, it's all too apparent.
It all reminds me of the robert johnson story (proof in an interview bob dylan gave a couple of years ago where he goes on about the deal he made and how he still has to hold up his end with the supreme creator of this earth and the wolrd you can't see.. scary stuff!!) about the musician selling his soul to the devil in return for the trappings of fame, fortune and celebrity.
