I've just finished reading this book by Ralph Ellis, which puts forward some interesting theories; though I don't necessarily agree with them.

Saul/St. Paul was actually the same person as the historan Josephus, and invented Christianity as a money-making scam.

Jesus was of the Egyptian royal family, born in AD 14 and died in AD 101. He was the leader of the Jewish Revolt of AD 70, crucified in that year, survived, and was castrated and exiled to Chester in England.

why chester?

There was a large Roman fort there with an odd Zodiacal temple built at exactly that time, and the theory is he was exiled there by Vespasian.

I've never read any of his other books but I probably will now.
