Does anyone have experience with -healing mudra's-?

I use them every day, for some years now and they really help me.
I use a Dutch and Serbian book with images of mudra's for all kinds
of problems from headaches to healing in general and relief from pain for all the organs and many diseases.

They are so easy to do, you don't need anything but your hands and
you can do them everywhere.

Here is a website with photo's of the handpositions:
http://www.mudrasforhealing.com/mudras.htm

and more drawings:

Take care,
Mila.

People fold their fingers in various Mudras (Gestures). It is little known, however, that Mudra Science is Tatva Yoga-Yoga based on science of elements. And, believes Acharya Keshav Dev, these mudras can help cure many diseases.

It is said in most of the ancient Indian texts on Yoga that the human body has been bestowed the power to heal itself from each and every disease without exception. And the body must be taken care of like a temple, place of worship.

Also, talking about Mudra's Science , the hand is said to have pressure points for all the glands that control all the vital functions of the body. Hence , by forming different positions and forms with the hand, we infact activate various glands and organs to work properly and you can just try forming any mudra with your hands and you will feel something to be activated within yourself.

Let us now look at some of the Mudra's (http://fitnessfundaa.blogspot.com/2008/09/yoga-mudras.html) and their benefits.

you're very welcome jojo :)

They're wonderful and easy to do and all you need is your hands.

I'm combining the mudra's now with orgonite and crystals on certain positions
that require healing, experimenting a little.
Will get back on that if interesting things happen ;)

hey mila, this is a wonderful thread :)

i've been reading up on mudras myself and looking to combine its effects along with that of kundalini yoga, pranayama and meditation.

i found that just a week of kundalini yoga made me a much calmer person and alert as well. i'll be (specifically) looking to try out dhyani, uttarabodhi and vajrapradama to get a good start.

these mudras are also used in numerous dances here and one can see how the hand movements add to the beauty, grace and 'tranquility' of these dance forms.

thanks again for starting this thread.

you're very welcome pink :)

I have seen dances like that, they are wonderful indeed
(visiting the family of an Indian child from my class, and then they made the teacher- me-dance as well :D)

I should post more of these, I was looking for one that I use when I go to sleep, but I can't find a picture, yet.

-Right hand: connect your thumb and index finger
-Left hand: connect your thumb and the little finger.
Five minutes and then: sweet dreams.
I do it always! It makes your relax and prepares for sleep.

Nice article about the deeper (in this case buddhist) significance of mudra's and
beautiful images:

http://www.exoticindiaart.com/article/mudras

From this site:

(Mudras are a non-verbal mode of communication and self-expression, consisting of hand gestures and finger-postures. They are symbolic sign based finger patterns taking the place, but retaining the efficacy of the spoken word, and are used to evoke in the mind ideas symbolizing divine powers or the deities themselves.

The composition of a mudra is based on certain movements of the fingers; in other words, they constitute a highly stylized form of gestureal communication. It is an external expression of 'inner resolve', suggesting that such non-verbal communications are more powerful than the spoken word.

Many such hand positions were used in the Buddhist sculpture and painting of India, Tibet, China, Korea and Japan. They indicate to the faithful in a simple way the nature and the function of the deities represented. Mudras are thus gestures which symbolize divine manifestation. They are also used by monks in their spiritual exercises of ritual meditation and concentration, and are believed to generate forces that invoke the deity)

DHENU POSTURE:
Method: Crossing both hands, join the index finger to the middle finger, ring finger to the little fingers and keep thumb to the other thumb. Point the fingers downward. Close your eye and concentrate your conscious mind on the mudra. While in this position you will feel your mental problems going in to the earth through your fingers.
Benefits: By practicing 1 to 5 minutes for 7 days, it is helpful in curing depression, mental disturbance, despair, dissension and stress.

GOOD NIGHT MUDRA (PARIVATAN MUDRA):
Method: Lie down on your back. Clasp your hand tightly, interlocking the fingers. Then with the fingers of the left hand press on the back of the right hand and vice versa. Repeat 27 times.
Benefits: By practicing for 3 days, this mudra cures insomnia and can lead to sound sleep and no bad dreams. The body will rest easily and comfortably.

from:http://ezinearticles.com/?Hand-Yoga-For-Stressed-Mums&id=836137

(article: Hand Yoga for stressed mums, but I do it too :))

Enter the very useful and very de-stressing yoga in your hand postures. Known to all the "in crowd" as mudra's.
Mudras are hand postures that when held for as little as three minutes can encourage the flow of specific energy channels in your body. They are very subtle and allow the body when given the chance to re-balance itself.
No flash outfits, groovy eco-friendly yoga mats or super flexible bodies needed here.
All you need is your good self and 3 minutes to allow your mind and body to release the tension and stress through clever movements and positions with your fingers, hands and palms.

Enter the healing rejuvenation mudra:
Sit comfortably somewhere, anywhere. You can even do them right here and now in front of your computer. Alternately it might be in your car, locked in the toilet (sometimes necessary with young children) your secret hiding place, kitchen, lounge or bedroom.
Make sure your back is straight. Your eyes can be kept open. Place both palms of your hands directly on your ears. Place your left palm on left ear and right palm on right ear. Gently move your hands as if massaging your ears in a smooth circular motion. Repeat this circulation motion in a counterclockwise direction for at least 3 minutes.
During those 3 minutes listen to the sounds of the ocean which you can hear naturally in your ears. Your breathing should be long, slow and deep. You can also close your eyes if you feel more comfortable.
Make sure your inhale and exhale go all the way down to your abdomen releasing any stale air and energy.
If your mind is having trouble staying focused then give it something useful to do by repeating the following mantra.
"I am calm, relaxed and rejuvenated" "I am calm, relaxed and rejuvenated"
A healing mudra to prevent exhaustion:
Sit with a straight back. Lift your arms and get a hold of your earlobes with your index fingers and thumbs. Hold onto your ears and let the weight of your hands pull on them.
Relax and feel the energy shift and drain away from inside your head, down into your body and then back into the ground.
Hold for 3 minutes focusing all the time on long, slow deep breathes.
Again if your mind is restless simply repeat a mantra that feels comfortable for you:
"I am easily releasing all stress from my mind and body"
A healing mudra for strong nerves:
Sit with a straight spine. Women: Lift your left hand to ear level, palm facing out.
Connect your thumb and middle finger and stretch your other fingers.
Place your right hand in front of your solar plexus (stomach area), palm facing up. Your thumb and little finger are touching; the other fingers are straight. Men reverse the position.
Inhale with four breaths and exhale in one strong breath. Stresses have little chance of depleting you when your nervous system is strong and healthy.

The above is called Mandala Mudra and is the gesture of wholeness. It's wonderful for balancing the mind and emotions, and especially helpful in emotional challenges and bringing greater clarity.
This mudra stimulates the five elements, allowing your energy to move freely through the subtle channels called nadi's and chakra's.
The thumb represents fire, the index finger air, the middle finger sky or ether, the ring finger is earth and the pinky is water.

place your right hand on top of the left and touch the tips of the thumbs
rest your hands comfortably in your lap
close your eyes and breathe naturally
sit quietly for about five minutes and allow a sense of wholeness to embrace you

Hi Lemonique,

Bookmarked that site, thanks!

Wish there was a mudra to repair the problems on my computer...trying to channel some chi into it instead (maybe it's just too much with the black
tourmaline on the right side and orgonite on the left :D)

Hi redskywalker,

Try some and see what works best for you. There is one (ringfinger and the thumb put together, five minutes) that calms you and I even do them with the kids I work with.

hi jolinemaria,

I hope you'll feel better soon :)

from: http://www.crystallotus.com/Mudras/8mudra.htm
I've posted this mudra before:

APAN MUDRA
Energy Mudra
With each hand: Place the thumb, middle finger, and ring finger together-extend the
other fingers. When needed, do for 5 to 45 minutes or use three times a
day for 15 minutes as a course of treatment.
http://www.crystallotus.com/Mudras/images/APAN%20MUDRA.jpg
This mudra supports the removal of waste materials and toxins from the body, as well as eliminatingurinary problems. The Apan Mudra also stimulates the wood element, which is associated with the energy of the liver and gallbladder. This element also contains the power and pleasure of springtime, of new beginnings, of tackling and shaping visions of the future. In addition, the Apan Mudra has a balancing effect on the mind, which is largely dependent upon a well-functioning liver. It gives us patience, serenity, confidence, inner balance, and harmony. In the mental realm, it creates the ability to develop vision. You need all of this when you lookinto the future, while facing new challenges, and if your wishes are to be fulfilled.

http://www.yogsadhna.com/img/Photos/sv.jpg Benefits:
a) Helps in digesting the food properly
b) Reduces the formation of gases and acids in the body.
c) Balances the Panch Vaayu. (prana or energy flow)
d) Cures the liver dysfunction.

Wow that's great!
I looked into the mudra's but somehow I overlooked apan mudra - maybe didn't read to the end of the explanation. I will start praqctising it today 3x a day. Having real trouble, waking up every night. Lack of sleep makes me very grumpy.
The Samaan Vaayu mudra sounds great as well, I will practise that one after meals.
See you soon :)

Detoxification Mudra
http://health.indianetzone.com/yoga/images/Detoxification-Mudra.jpgDetoxification is a comprehensive and a holistic process of house cleaning and is necessary and it has to be done with some regularity too. This Mudra helps detoxify the system, which is so essential considering the muck it accumulates along the way, both physical and emotional. This Mudra is done with both hands.

Place each thumb on the inner edge of the third joint of the ring finger.

All the other fingers are relaxed and extended.

Vajra Mudra
This Mudra stimulates circulation. One should do this Mudra with each hand three times a day for five minutes. This Mudra is practiced with the three fingers - the middle finger, the ring finger and the little finger.

http://health.indianetzone.com/yoga/images/mudra_vajra.jpg Your three fingers should be bent and held together and the thumb pressed on to the side of the middle fingernail.

Then extend your index finger and it should also be relaxed.

Fingers and Mudras
http://health.indianetzone.com/yoga/images/Fingers-&-Mudras.jpgMudras are all about the fingers, and each finger is packed with nerve endings, energy and a meaning all its own. The correct play of the fingers gives the Mudra the potency to heal. Let us take a look at the five fingers:

The thumb represents the element earth, the stomach and worry.

The index finger represents the element metal, the lungs, and the large intestine and the emotions are depression, sadness and grief.

The middle finger is the element fire, the heart, small intestine, circulatory and respiratory systems, and the emotions are impatience and hastiness.

The ring finger is the element wood and is connected to the liver, gall bladder, and nervous system, and corresponds to anger.

The little finger corresponds to water, the kidneys, and fear.

In palmistry and astrology too the fingers depict profound meaning.

http://health.indianetzone.com/yoga/images/mudras_mounts.jpgLittle finger: Mercury - The little finger relates to communication and it is associated with the second chakra.

Ring finger: Apollo - The ring finger refers to relationships and is associated with Apollo, the sun god and the root chakra.

Middle finger: Saturn - The middle finger refers to responsibility and is associated with the throat chakra, the gateway of purity.

Index finger: Jupiter - The index finger refers to self-worth and is associated with the heart chakra.

Thumb: Mars - The thumb refers to self-assertion and is associated with the fire element.

The soft padding under each finger is the respective mount. The soft padding under the thumb is the Mount of Mars and opposite it is the Lunar Mount. The Earth Mount is between the two, in the hollow of the palm, and the beginning of the palm, at the wrist, is the Mount of Neptune. Every finger has energy and has a role to play in our well-being and development. Due to the power given to each finger, every person has his health in his own hands.

Very often, while healing with hands, one can feel tender, soft, even painful areas on one palm while roaming over them with the fingers of the other hand. These are pressure points and can mean that a certain co-related organ is disturbed or over-used.

Kundalini Yoga Mudra's: Venus mudra

http://www.pinklotus.org/KYplaatjes/mudra%20venus%20man.jpg
(male)

http://www.pinklotus.org/KYplaatjes/mudra%20venus%20vrouw.jpg
(female)

This mudra is used frequently in exercises. It derives the name because it connects the positive and negative sides of the Venus mound on each hand to the thumbs. The thumbs represent the ego. The Venus mound is the fleshy area at the base of the thumb. It is symbolized by the planet Venus which is associated with the energy of sensuality and sexuality. The mudra channelizes the sexual energy and promotes glandular balance. It also brings the ability to fôcus or concentrate easily if you rest it in your lap while in a meditative posture. To form the mudra place the palms facing each other. Interlace the fingers with the left little finger on the bottom. Put the left thumb tip just above the base of the thumb on the webbing between the thumb and index finger. The tip of the right thumb presses the fleshy mound at the base of the left thumb. Thumb positions are reversed for women.

Kundalini Mudra

There is a great font of vital force that lies in the area of the moola-chakra (in the area of the perineum between the anus and the genitals). By stimulation of this area, the resultant energy can be tapped for the mundane benefits of improved sexual performance, potency and control over ejaculation. If this great vital energy is not dissipated through sex, it can also be transformed into greater vitality and spirutual energy.
Hold the vertical index finger of the left hand in a fist made of the right hand as shown in the figure. Hold this mudra as low down close to the abdomen as possible. While practising this mudra, you may also periodically contract the area of the perineum for periods of a few seconds (contract the anal sphincter muscles and try to draw the genitals inwards, while taking gentle deep breaths).

(15 minutes, 3x a day)

Nasti mudrasamam kinchit
Siddhidam kshitimandale “There is nothing in this world like Mudras for giving success.”

----------------------------------------------------------------

Any living body is made of 5 distinct elements :
FIRE WIND ETHER EARTH WATER These are not as per science's definition of elements but refer to the five building blocks that go into the formation of any living body. Several ancient health systems are based on the concept of the balance of the five elements. Indian Medical science according to Ayurved and metaphysics affirm that distortion or impairment of the 5 elements create outer disturbance and inner sickness in the body.
The 5 fingers of the hands represent these 5 elements :
The Thumb symbolises the Fire The Forefinger symbolises the Wind The Middle finger symbolises the Ether The Ring finger symbolises the Earth The Little or small finger symbolises the Water
The finger tips of every living being have many concentrated nerve root endings which are free energy discharge points. Science also confirms that around every tip there is a concentration of free electrons. By touching together of the tips of the fingers or the finger tips to other parts of the palms this free energy (Prana) is redirected back into the body along specified channels, back up to the brain. The redirected energy traveling through the nerves stimulates the various chakras. Keeping the hands on the knees stimulates the Gupta Nari and makes the energy start from the Mooladhara Chakra.

Mudras and Reiki

Combining mudras with Reiki seems to strengthen their healing powers further. Try using Reiki [with, or without symbols] with the mudras and watch your energy levels soar.
To do this, sit in a chair with a straight back, connect to Reiki by intent, draw the symbols mentally on your hands, and join the fingers in "key mudras" relevant to the goal.
In Reiki, the most commonly practiced mudras are the Hakini, the Gassho, the Rin, and the Sha mudras.
Hakini mudra

When you join the tips of the five fingers of the right hand, with those of the left, it forms the Hakini. This mudra is helpful in balancing the right and left sides of the brain; it also benefits the "third" eye, and the lungs.
Gassho mudra

This is a prayer position. It is performed by holding hands in namaste position before the chest.
Rin mudra

Interlace the fingers and clasp your hands together, keeping the middle fingers joined and extended. This strengthens our mind and physical body. It is useful for good emotional health.
Sha mudra

This is obtained by interlacing the fingers and clasping the hands together with the index fingers joined and extended. The mudra is used to direct and focus energy to a particular area in the body to provide the healing effect.

Time to wake up the thread :D

I found an e-book with fascinating background information on Mudra's:
(with many specific mudra's, music, color, acupuncture, chakra's, meditation, exercises)

http://www.scribd.com/doc/17928000/Mudras-Yoga-in-Your-Hands

"A Little Exercise as a Break:
While inhaling, hold your hands in front of your chest with fingers
spread. Hold your breath and stretch out your arms horizontally at
your side. Now exhale and vigorously make a fist with each hand.
Then breathe normally, open the fists, and lower your arms. Repeat
three times.
This little exercise expands the bronchial tubes, opens the lungs, strengthens
the heart, and refreshes the mind. Asthmatic patients often cough during
this exercise because it loosens the mucus in the bronchial tubes, and
heart patients feel an intensified awareness of the heart."

Enjoy :)

Much love,

MUKULA MUDRA
(Beak hand)

Place the four fingers on your
thumbs and put your fingertips on
the part of your body that needs
more energy. Do this with each
hand.
Do as needed, or five times a
day for 5 minutes.

This energy-giving and relaxing mudra is placed on the organ or body part that hurts, or that feels weak or tense. This is like directing a laser ray of regenerating energy to the respective body part or organ that needs healing. Samuel West, an American scientist and healer, uses the Mukula Mudra when he wants to electrically recharge an organ, and has been very successful with this method. He was able to prove that every health disorder, as well as many undefinable pains, is caused because the respective electrical field is too weak. According to West, the fingers should be placed on the various
organs as follows:

Lungs: Place your fingers on the right side and left side, about 2 inches
below the collarbone.
Stomach: Place the fingers of both hands directly beneath the sternum.
Liver and gallbladder: Place your left hand at the lower end of the sternum.
With your right hand, stroke 21 times across the ends of the ribs on
the right side, as if you wanted to light a match.
Spleen and pancreas: Place your right hand at the lower end of the sternum-
With your left hand, stroke 21 times across the ends of the ribs on the
left side, as if you wanted to light a match.
Kidneys: Place the fingers of both hands about two inches above the waist
on the back.
Bladder: Place the fingers of both hands on the right and left side of the
abdomen, next to the pubic bone.
Intestines: Place the fingers of one hand on the navel and, from right to
left, draw a circle that becomes increasingly larger (like a spiral).
Always do a complete yoga breath while you do this. After inhaling, during
the extended pause, say the affirmation below.

The following colors achieve an additional effect:
For treatment of the lungs, visualize the color white; for the liver and
gallbladder, green; for the stomach, spleen, and pancreas, use yellow;
use red for the heart or small intestine; use blue for the kidneys and
bladder.

Affirmation: Dirt out—power in.

Introduction to Mudras
Mudras (gesture, seal) are subtle physical movements of the hands, face, and or body. Complex mudras involve the whole body in a combination of asana, pranayama, The purpose of a mudra is to activate and create a circuit of prana in the body. This circuit channels the prana in a specific way to create subtle effects and beneficial changes on different parts of the bodies systems.
People fold their fingers in various Mudras (Gestures). It is little known, however, that Mudra Science is Tatva Yoga-Yoga based on science of elements. And, believes Acharya Keshav Dev, these mudras can help cure many diseases.

Thanks mila for bringing mudras into my life . The directions at http://www.eclecticenergies.com/chakras/open.php worked well for me too. It seems alot of stuff that I used to try and feel nothing, is now working. Good times :)
