has anyone seen the brightest star ever seen in the sky recently...its usually in the south west.... imo it looks like about 4 stars in 1 and isnt in the the sky every night, ive noticed it around 3 nights a week, depending on the visability, and ive watched it since about august .funny thing is tho i havnt seen it in a few weeks, tonight included.
now after reading on a few other places, ive been told, its jupiter, the space station,sirius...etc.
well its definately not any of those..ive checked...if you dont believe me just start watching the sky every night (south west)or to the right of orions belt and you will see it .
the next time i see it i will post on here and you can all have a look...

It's Venus. It's been growing closer to us for months now as I am informed that its current orbit brings it closer to the earth.

Welcome to the forums, i am in boro too. And yes i first noticed it over a year ago by luck through my bedroom window looking south, for like 4 nights then it was gone..then it resurfaced and the whole place was talking about it.
I haven't seen it for 2 weeks or more
But untill recently it was there, and now its not. So i corroborate what you are saying.

You're correct. It is there every single night. Dependant on visibility for instance cloud cover, will determine if it's visible. From what I've seen so far, it is always in the same place.

Venus is a planet;) not a star???
i am not ruling out you cannot see it though.
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/sky_calendar.html
No its not regulus as regulus is in the constellation of leo.
good way though of learning about stars.:D:D
could it be any of these 2? apparently there are over 25 in the constellation.
* Betelgeuse, known alternatively by its Bayer designation "Alpha Orionis," is a massive M-type red supergiant star nearing the end of its life. It is the second brightest star in the Orion constellation, but was mistakenly classified as the brightest because it is a semiregular variable star and was experiencing a tremendous increase in brightness at the time. It serves as the "right shoulder" of the hunter it represents (assuming that he is facing the observer), and is the twelfth brightest star in the night sky.
* Rigel, which is also known as "Beta Orionis," is a B-type blue supergiant that is the seventh brightest star in the night sky. Similar to Betelguese, Rigel is fusing heavy elements in its core and will pass its supergiant stage soon (on an astronomical timescale), either collapsing in the case of a supernova or shedding its outer layers and turning into a white dwarf. It serves as the left foot of Orion, the hunter.

Could you get to roseberry topin?
I guess, a clear night, high up wheres there's no electromagnetic smog and light pollution. I don't know the best cameras for it, so u guess just hope we have clear nights and can get to higher ground - apply a noise filter etc.
I'm gonna look for cameras that have the telescopic function you can add to them, but i guess im talking abut big money.

Rumoured to have caused the great biblical flood becuase its opposing orbit to our solar system created a shockwave through the solar system.

He's civilian ATC . I'll ask him. Was over a few beers as usual. Maybe he was pulling my leg.
I'm now 100 percent convinced.
Have you ever seen the WTC ufo footage ? I know were getting off topic now but what the hell.
Theres footage from a while back (before CGI) of a ufo buzzing a helicopter.
It then climbs at an incredible rate.
One clip shows the whole thing in slow motion. I cant see how it could have been faked. Its over 20 years old clip.
There is some kind of vapour trail and if you pause at just the right momment you'll see a v section or groove in the craft. Similiar to those on the mysterious objects from NASAs infamous tether incident.
Google both if your not familiar. Nice spaeking with you , will look out for your posts on what this star is .. Off to bed

Religion does not cause death, religion is a label USED by man to cause death;)
Nesta Webster quotes a remarkable prophecy from the Essai sur la Secte des llluminés, made by the Marquis de Luchet, a liberal noble, at the very outset of the Revolution:
"Deluded people, ... learn that there exists a conspiracy in favour of despotism against liberty, of incapacity against talent, of vice against virtue, of ignorance against enlightenment … This society aims at governing the world ... its object is universal domination."

Did you google the teather incident ? (not sure on spelling)
Its footage from Nasa , a teather came loose and floats out. Its a mile long this teather.
eventually it becomes energised like a rod. There are literally hundreds of these objects swimming around it. Get this , one comes behind the teather and is pulsing. It has a v section from memory. Haven't seen it for a while.
Its estimated to be 3 miles in diameter because it crosses behind the teather and using the mile long teather as a guide.
Wierd thing is all the objects are kind of swimming around like you'd see at the bootmom of the ocean. Like biological organisms. Or fireflys dancing round a naked flame.
V section ? Coincidence ?

they were probably f3 tornados flying out to the north sea from leeming.thats the usual flight path,im ex raf and i used to direct them at work
hey ya right about the time mate..ive just asked my missus she says it was about 8 aswell. i thought it was later!!
tbh i didnt think they looked like raf aircraft at the time, which is why i got my missus to come out and have a look, they seemed a bit too fast, and the solid white star like lights were funny too,did you see any other colour lights ,my missus says she thought she seen red on the top and 2 green lights on the bottom(2nd star)
They came from the west and turned south, then just switched off, If you know what I mean.
They were a golden/white colour and I did not see any other lights on them.

i cant wait for it to get dark, its friday night and this is the night i usually see my star . keep an eye out to the right again of orion belt ,just a bit lower in height.

Stars
Leo contains many bright stars, such as Regulus (α Leonis), the lion's heart; Denebola (β Leonis); and γ1 Leonis (Algieba). Many other fainter stars have been named as well, such as δ Leo (Zosma), θ Leo (Chort), κ Leo (Al Minliar al Asad ), λ Leo (Alterf), and ο Leo (Subra).
Stars
Besides Spica, other bright stars in Virgo include β Virginis (Zavijava), γ Vir (Porrima), δ Virginis (Auva) and ε Virginis (Vindemiatrix). Other fainter stars that were also given names are ζ Virginis (Heze), η Virginis (Zaniah), ι Virginis (Syrma) and μ Virginis (Rijl al Awwa).
The star 70 Virginis is one of the first known extrasolar planetary system with one confirmed planet 7.5 times the mass of Jupiter.
Individuals born on the cusp of Leo (the fifth Sign of the Zodiac) and Virgo (the sixth Sign of the Zodiac) are ruled by both the Sun and the Planet Mercury. The attributes of these two combined Signs result in a good-natured disposition and natives who are inclined to take life easy, being well-satisfied with both themselves and their station in life. These cuspians make for good neighbours who would never dream of meddling in the affairs of others:cool:. Usually highly intelligent, Leo/Virgo subjects are methodical and inclined to be hard-workers. Indeed, this particular cusp combination has produced some exceedingly successful physicians and teachers.

like i said all along its just not a star ,planet or the space station..out of the 3 i would of said space station
its obviously in low orbit and it doent have a set pattern to where it is going to be...some nights its there and some nights its not.if you set it against a fixed object you can see it move very slow across the sky
when i next see it i will be first to post on here.. in 30 years looking up its the strangest looking and brightest star ive ever seen

What about the footage posted of it changing colour from violet to green ? The V section shows up on the footage. Cant imagine a space station changing colour in orbit. (Unless its a camera anomoly)

Cripes its the return
BEWARE of this false "Christ." I feel he is on his way!!!
On 12 December 2008 Share International distributed a news release announcing that in the very near future a large, bright star will appear in the sky visible throughout the world, night and day. Around a week later Maitreya will give his first interview on major US television.
Since early January 2009 sightings of the starhave been reported from Norway, South Africa, the United States,Dubai and Qatar. More and more sightings are now expected.Reports have already appeared in Norwegian newspapers.
A new article by Benjamin Creme’s Master, who is based in the Himalayas, reveals how close we are to witnessing this sign and the historic events which will follow. Maitreya’s first interview will lead to further and more frequent interviews in the USA, Japan and other countries.
Maitreya’s first interview
In the very near future, people everywhere will have the opportunity to witness an extraordinary and significant sign, the like of which has been manifested only once before, at the birth of Jesus. Then, according to Christian teaching, a star appeared in the heavens and led three wise men from the East to the birthplace of Jesus. Soon, once again, a star-like luminary of brilliant power will be seen around the world. What does this mean? How is it possible?
The answer lies in the fact that this mysterious event is a sign, and heralds the beginning of Maitreya’s open mission. Soon after the sign appears in our skies, Maitreya will give His first media interview on American television.

OK,
after a further 30 mins research I conclude that its Venus. At least three astrology forumns have the same thread and dozens of replies along the lines of.... " Its venus you dipstick ! " seem to be the norm.
Apparently they get fed up with this every year in the astro community.

It's Venus. It's been growing closer to us for months now as I am informed that its current orbit brings it closer to the earth.
I see that every night. It's really bright but there's many other bright stars too that seem to flicker green, red and blue and somehow seem like they are splitting up somehow.

The station should be visible tonight around 20:16 look towards Sirius (the brightest Star) 18 degrees SSW, the station is a few degrees below, it should look like a fast moving star. The Shuttle is visible tomorrow night at 19:10.

I'm sure it isn't Venus, I have been watching this bright oblect for maybe nearly a year but haven't seen it for a couple of months now.
It used to be quite low in the sky and South, South West, as has been said. I presumed it was the space station until a mate of mine commented on it and said "I watch that when I'm having a fag out the back door, it moves about because I line it up with them trees and that chimney".
I used to think it was like a helicopter hovering with it's search light on, it was that bright.
It wouldn't move much maybe 10-15 degrees to the West but still at the same height in the sky.
I even thought about making a mini wood-henge lol just so I knew for sure where it was.
I have seen amateur pics where people track the space station and that orbits the Earth so it isn't that.
Interesting!!

08-06-2009, 02:04 PM
Well in photography the best pictures tend to allow you to have great contrast by including the whitest white and what they call true black. If the brightness is too intense for the medium then it shows as overexposed, definition is lost. If the quality of the medium was to increase by way of expanded frequency, then you would be able to percieve a wider range of a spectrum, making whites whiter and darks darker although as white contains all the colour... it's visibility is more measurable than the dark.

I've been watching and asking about it for 6 months without anyone being able to tell me what it is. I lost track of it now, but it usually came out towards the south in the evening and disappears behind the horizon towards the West every day.
I'm in London, and it looked really suspicious to me because it is by far the brightest object in the sky. It is the first one you see, sometimes even before dark, and due to the luminous pollution of the city of London it is often the only visible object in the sky.

I've been watching and asking about it for 6 months without anyone being able to tell me what it is. I lost track of it now, but it usually came out towards the south in the evening and disappears behind the horizon towards the West every day.

Interesting!!
lol done the same thing myself one night tracked it through some branches of a tree/....
since when does a planet take a holiday for a few months?
the object has to be in a low orbit, this explains the movement.
if anything it is a satalite!

Im sure its Venus
I thought that too, but during the months I was tracking it I compared the sky with a virtual dome, and it didn't match Venus or any other planet or star.
The position matched that of the asteroid “Vesta”, but this one is supposedly too far away and relatively too small to show as the brightest object in the sky. It was really odd.
if anything it is a satalite!
For a while I thought it was a satellite too, but the problem is that it moved at the same pace as the star dome, so this would simply mean that it was a fixed object; which is impossible for a satellite, as they need to be in a moving orbit around earth.

Ok flyermay. I just noticed several threads about thie 'strange star' very bright, seen in england in the south west around christmas time, travelling further west as time went on and presumed it was Venus.
I havent seen it for a long time now, I havent really seen the stars much either since its lighter much later ;)

I noticed that too. I admit that I stopped tracking it a few months ago, but one day I realised that it simply disappeared; which makes the case even weirder.

Hmm...the other night, about 4 days ago. I did see a star in that direction, about 1.30 in the morning, It was very close to the moon, which I thought strange as I presumed the moonlight would obscure it. It was nowhere near as big or as bright as Venus was and it seemed to have a reddish glow and was flickering. Yes Im aware that its said that only stars flicker but Venus was doing the same thing christmas time. Mars perhaps?
I looked out again the following night around 11.30 ish??? The moon was further east and the star or whatever it was was in the same place. I would have imagined that it would have been near to the moon as it was the previous night a few hours on. I did think I should check up on stellarium just to see as I Dont have a clue about astronomy
PS what time did you see it? Because if it was earlier and the moon hadnt lightened the sky up, then perhaps it would appear much brighter?

If you lost track of it a few months ago, perhaps it was Venus. Up until even the middle of March Venus was an evening object visible low in the west after sunset. Months before it was much higher in the sky and so would have been dazzling after sunset and dusk had faded. As time went on, it's orbit around the sun created the geometrical angle from our point of sight that made it appear closer and closer to the Sun in our sky. Because we see it's elliptical orbit around the sun basically edge-on, we just see it's orbital motion as getting further away from the Sun in the evening to a point - slowing - then reversing back and eventually becoming a morning object and doing a similar appearance there.
In the distant past, people didn't know this was the same object ... they thought the morning star and evening star were two distinct things. But they were really Venus
From the UK, Venus (roughly) rises about 1.5 hours before Sunrise (this varies depending on your exact location). Venus is a morning object now and won't be visible in the evening after sunset for some time.
Because the orbit of Venus (and Mercury) is closer to the Sun and is an ellipse within the larger orbit of Earth, due to geometry, Venus and Mercury only get so far away from the Sun in our sky either in the evening or morning. Planets which orbit further from the Sun than us will appear to roughly travel along the path of the ecliptic in the sky over years (of course because the Earth rotates once a day, all objects outside the Earth appear in our sky to rotate around us in 24 hours... the Moon will shift noticably from night to night because it orbits the Earth.
Right now Venus and Mars are very near to each other in the morning sky low in the east before sunrise.
---------
Venus can get very bright (far brighter in apparent magnitude than the brightest star Sirius).
---------
Why not get up an hour before sunrise some day soon, and with an unobstructed eastern horizon, see if you can see a very bright "star" and a bit less bright "star" ... that would be Venus and Mars apparently near each other (really, they are far apart in 3d space but the apparent angle between them is small).
In the morning before sunrise, in the months to come, Venus will get higher and higher and then you can test to see if it's the same thing as you saw in the evening before.
Due to the present geometric relationship during our summer months, Venus won't gain too much apparent elevation before sunrise.
You can check things out for any location and time with this good software.... it looks like the sky (with dusk and dawn effects )

-------------
I remember one night in early december 2008 (around then) when Venus, Jupiter and the thin crescent moon were apparently very near each other in the evening sky.

"Why is it getting brighter? Do you have an explanation?"
---------
As Venus orbits the Sun, from our point of view, the sunlight reflecting from it which we see will vary. As Venus is still in the region on the further side of the Sun (ie, from our point of view, this would appear to be Venus starting to show up as an evening object in our sky), it's apparent size will be smaller (would need a telescope to see the disc). As it's orbit swings it around the Sun (so now Venus is appearing higher in the evening sky from our point of view), it gets closer to us and it's disk gets bigger but it also starts to show more and more of a cresent shape (blends from gibbous, to half to crescent over time). There comes a point where it's larger size and the actual amount of cresent (ie, the amount of area of reflected sunlight we are seeing from Venus) will create a maximum brightness. Then even if it is getting closer to us, it's brightness may decline a bit because it becomes more of a crescent (ie, thinner and less area of reflected light reaching us).
Also, the reason it is showing as a crescent is because it's going more and more into a direct line between us and the Sun (we see this as getting lower and lower in the evening sky after sunset). This will mean Venus is now lower and lower in the evening sky and so it is still seen within the glow of dusk.
Because it is within the light of dusk, it would not be judged to be as bright as if it was still higher in the sky. WHen it is higher in the sky, it will still be visible when it is darker after dusk has diminished or disappeared.
---------
---------
As Venus orbits the Sun in about 225 Earth days. But because the Earth is also orbitting the Sun at 365 days, the Earth has moved a great deal furthur along it's own orbit by the next time Venus is in the same relative location to us. So Venus appears to have about a 584 day cyclic pattern between when it's an evening object and when it is once again an evening object.
Due to the fact that the Earth's axis of rotation is angled, at various times during the apparent greatest distance of Venus from the Sun, Venus in our sky may actually still be somewhat low in near the east or west (as morning or evening object). At these times, the ecliptic is at a shallow angle to the horizon... Venus may be apparently a large number of degrees away from the Sun in our sky, but this distance would be angled more horizontally instead of vertically so it would be stuck nearer the horizon and within the dusk or dawn light.
----------------
It's kind of complicated geometrically so some sort of 3d model or at least looking at Stellarium over months and years can show the effects of all of this.
Suffice it to say that not every time Venus is an evening object will it also be during an Earth month where it will appear in our sky at a great altitude. This last winter it happened to appear high in the sky in evening for months. Now currently it is a morning object but even over several months, it won't gain a huge amount of apparent altitude in our sky.
---------
Probably too much babbling and maybe it doesn't even make sense. It's kindof hard to explain this. The relative geometries created by the various orbits and the Earth's angle of it's own rotational axis in relation to it's orbit makes for many changes.

Excellent info Zetex0void, not that I understood all of it, but thankyou :)
Have you seen Monkey Blood that talks of Venus being the 'planet of the crossing'? Ive asked several times on another thread but I get blanked. Maybe its because the theory of Veuns being Nibiru is too stupid but thats what is suggested. It claims Venus comes between the earth and sun every 8 years (I think) Next time is in 2012. I found it interesting as the Sumerian Tablets show an 8 pointed star, Venus'sd number is 8 and Salem means Venus!

Down here in the southern hemisphere we're seeing it as a morning star and at the moment it is going through the beginning of its next eight year cycle so it will be seen this year at its brightest - especially at the winter and summer solstices.
The wife and I got up at 4:30a.m (accidentally) the other morning and saw it from our kitchen window coming out of the sea before the sun, (so that is due east) pretty far out. I saw it as a morning star once before on the summer solstice after an all nighter and it blew my mind... it rose before the sun and bathed everything in a golden red light, then it shone this pure, monocromatic white light then golden red again the effect lasting about fifteen minutes (and forever in my mind) and then the sky went dark again before the sun came up. This happened when it wasn't even meant to be at its brightest so I'm looking forward to this summer when its meant to be highly illuminated...
Might build me a fire and stay up all night..:D:cool:

I'd never considered the position of the sun in relation to stars so i allways thought stars would be round.
Look at it through a telescope and you'll see the phases of venus increasing and decreasing just as you would the moon.. ie. full-, half-venus etc.
My kids loved it... "daddy, daddy, daddy, it looks like the moon!!!"

I have to agree with Zetetic ovoid ,
I saw it at 4.00 am the other week in the south. Above the horizon I'd say about 20 degrees.

I'd never considered the position of the sun in relation to stars so i allways thought stars would be round.
Venus is a planet (so not a star) and only reflects light from the Sun (so it has an illuminated side and a dark side just like all the planets). Because it's orbit is closer to the Sun's, it will show (as seen from Earth) portions of it's unilluminated side as it orbit's (Mercury is like this too because it is closer to the Sun than Earth).
In fact, the observations by Galileo (early 1600's when he started using the telescope to view things) of it's phases over time was a key proof to him that the heliocentric (sun-centred) model of "the cosmos" was "true" and the Earth-centred model was false.
(Of course, in reality, the Sun is not the centre of the entire cosmos so the heliocentric model isn't quite true either LOL ... but it's basically true for this particular solar system but it was a major step forward in understanding physical reality from the point of view of the human experience of things.)
The diagram on the bottom of this page might explain the phases of Venus better.

So it's getting closer? Fab times ahead.
Unless I'm visualizing this incorrectly at this moment, I believe at the current time, Venus has "overtaken" Earth in it's orbit around the Sun (being closer to the Sun, it's velocity in it's orbit is more) and has started showing up as a morning (before dawn) sky object.
So Venus is actually getting further away from us as it orbits at the current time.
As it starts to appear in the pre-dawn sky, it will be close to the horizon where the Sun will "rise" and will be a larger thinner crescent in a telescope. Over time, it will be higher and rise more before the Sun and show more illuminated side but be smaller (further away from us in 3d space). As it continues it's orbit around the Sun (also, Earth is orbitting in the same counter-clockwise direction but is lagging behind and is further out from the Sun), it will be a smaller size in a telescope and show more illuminated side (so eventually greater than a "half-moon" shape). Eventually it will be heading around the far side of the SUn and get lost in the dawn glow in our sky. People might still be able to find it in the dawn glow in a telescope and it will be even smaller and closer to a full shape.
Eventually it will start to show up as an evening object after sunset ... in this scenario it is basically getting closer to Earth until it starts to swing between us and the Sun (it normall is not quite perfectly between us and the Sun ... but on rare occassions it "transits" the sun's visible disk and can be seen as a small dark disk against the Sun in telescopic photos or SAFE FILTERED viewing!) . Usually Venus will be slightly above or below the Sun as the orbits of Earth and Venus (and other planets ) have their own slight inclination away from being perfectly level with the general average plane of orbits of the planets around the Sun.
If you sit in a dark room with a simple desk lamp and hold an orange in your hand and circle it around the lamp in an "orbit", you'll see some phases of the orange in a similar way to Venus's.
-----------
Well I've babbled enough ... I think explaining things with words can probably not explain things very well so maybe I'm making no sense LOL
Here's a little shockwave "animated solar system " model where you can watch the relative orbits and zoom in. You'll need to zoom in quite a bit to see the inner planets which orbit much quicker than the outer ones (eg, Jupiter takes roughly 12 years)
