I've just been to my local shop, helped a woman in with a pushchair who probably looked somewhere in her 20s. She went to the till and asked for a packed of 10 Richmond Kingsize, and the girl who was 'serving' her who looked about 17, refused because she wasn't sure she looked 25.
I saw red and turned around and said "this country is getting more like Big Brother by the day" and nobody in the shop reacted or even acknowledged me. She meekly left the shop without a fight and I went to the till and asked for 2 hamlet cigars and a packet of pro plus, and I wasn't questioned. Damn, I must look like an adult then
I said a last passing word to the cashier, saying she looked well over 18 and there was no reason not to serve her, and the cashier just giggled at me!
What is going on?

What is going on?
A combination of a dim-witted, mind-controlled populace who follow instructions blindly and don't give a feck about what they're ACTUALLY doing, and the corporate big brother state getting people nicely programmed to expect restrictions if they don't have current photo ID on hand at-all-times to present when making purchases of anything.

I never said you're where not worth it. This is my first time being aware of you. People here don't know what they're talking about. You could be awesome, I wouldn't know unless some of your jealous friends pointed that out!!!

someone should ask them to define exactly what 25 year olds look like

Well next time I buy booze I am going to intimidate them for a change. If I buy booze and they ask me how old I am as they don't think I look 25, I am going to ask them what the legal age is to drink and then when they give me the answer (18) I will show them my driving licence and ask them what the feckin problem is.:D
That HAS TO BE a made up story SURELY
I believe it. Once, in a convenient store I was standing in line to buy something. The obviously elderly lady in front of me asked for a pack of cigarettes. The clerk asked for her ID. She hit the roof! Don't blame her either. The clerk pointed to the sign at the register stating the store ID'd all customers for alcohol and cigarette purchases.
Many stores in the US have signs stating that if a patron does not look at least 30 they must be prepared to show their ID.
Some stores are very strict about the ID thing and monitor their clerks closely. Still, it's stupid for crying out loud and there is no excuse for it. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE!

The differnce between Buying and drinking is vast. If I want to I can give a tipple to my one month old kid. But the same kid has to wait for a few years befor he could buy his own. I understand that in a pub, the age that one could give a drink to a kid is 5.
Nuff said.

Have you got a news link for this story?
I have noticed in the last 2 years or so this under 25 crap in the shops and under 21 in some pubs.

Can anyone actually point to the specific piece of legislation that states ID must be shown for the purchase of cigarettes and alcohol?
Or is it simply policy of the management of each shop?
I know there was a "Think21" promotion a couple of years ago, when staff were told to ask for ID if there was any doubt as to age and for them to use 21 as a guide ... but I have never seen or heard of any legislation that requires EVERYONE to provide ID for such purchases.

It is obvious what all this is leading to....... the ID card. Soon we wont be able to purchase anything in shops without one:mad:

This is just coming from personal experience in my local shops I would assume this will be happening nationally unless they are just targeting Teesside people cos we are a load of piss heads lol!!!!

I remember going to Amsterdam the day before my 18th Birthday and wandering into Coffesshop Bluebird. Oh shucks, there was the guy behind the counter telling me I needed ID, man I was pissed.
The next day when it was my Birthday I never got asked once for my ID in any coffeeshop, I couldn't believe it.
...And then when I had to go through the customs on the way back home I got stopped by an officer who pulled out this half-eaten hashcake I forgot I'd left in my coat pocket - 'what is this?' He said, 'oh it's a cake' I said - he just gave me the cake back and sent me on my way.
I've since been to Amsterdam most of my Birthdays. When I was 23 I went to Christiania, Copenhagen - a little-known anarchist free state where there's lots of dope. :)

Wtf! Since when?
Ever wonder why you don't have to show alternate ID for credit cards? Anyone can use your credit card and not have to show a picture ID to
prove you're that person. It helps to stimulate the economy they say
(allowing people to purchase online with just credit card numbers), but
runs up debt astronomically when everyone buys shit they don't need
or junk from foreign countries that doesn't last. Then you also get identity
theives. This really turns the system chaotic(that's what the ptb wants).
Then I go to a convenience store to buy cigarettes (I'm 50) and they want
picture ID? What a fuckin' load of horseshit!!!

The states is such a joke. One time I went to a booze shop to buy two bottles of juice. The women behind the counter asked me for ID. I told her I was not going to show ID to buy fruit juice so she sold it to me anyway. A lot of places ask you for ID every time you go there and people seem to have accepted it as normal. "OH I just take it as a complement" they say. I got some beers for some teenagers who asked me to buy it for them:) What they do in the bars is make the employee liable to a $2000 fine for selling to anyone under 21. One time I was quite drunk and I went to the door of the bar and stepped outside for a moment to see if I could see anywhere to get food. When I went back in this door guy appeared from nowhere and asked me for ID. I said he had to be joking. They don't like that attitude some Americans so he ended up pepper spraying me.
Another thing the do in the states (in some bars) is serve drinks untill closing time and then literraly take them off you agressively a moment later. It's the Law they say.
