View Full Version : The Matrix Movie As Modern Myth

Myth -- take what is truely happening in society and put it into symbols and symbolic stories. This is myth.
Joseph Campbell renown writer, lecturer, and teacher on Mythology was often asked by his students, "What are the myths of this Age?" He must have given it some thought, and came up with the view that Modern Myths are found on film.
He found that the original Star Wars movie was a modern myth, and often used this movie as an example. He found that this story -- though a modern "space opera" reflected the stories found in the ancient Vedic Ramayana,,, and other hero based Myths.
With the advent of the film, THE MATRIX, we find that the mythic images and meaning have taken a new and quantum leap. There is still a hero, but the forces of darkness no longer exist as a reality. In this story, it is up to the individual to transcend the enforced reality of some system he lives and breaths which is the Evil Empire.
Becoming aware of the the system's un-reality is the awakening portion of the myth. This is important. It was this awakening part that made almost half of the movie,, but the rest of the movie was sort of a mixture of dull myth and action movie within the framework of a computer reality that people are unknowingly hooked up to... later in the first movie and absolutely in the 2nd and 3rd continuation. Totally fell flat.
But this movie at it's basis was/is mythic. Today we live in a reality that is imposed upon us,, and is a reality that we have no apparent control over. Breaking away from the system requires a new birth, maybe, than a further understanding of the system so that you do not fall back into the system (like Apoc ++ A Cop) and are able to help others out. Understanding the workings of the system is more complete only after the awakening. In fact, it is implied that one must break free from it before one fully understands it.
There are other mythic messages for modern man in this story... like == those in the system are so hooked into the system they will kill you (become an agent Smith) to keep the system in place. In this sense, people don't realize they are slaves, but believe they are free, and anybody who wants to free them is seen as a threat. JUST LIKE OUR WORLD. There may be many examples such as this. This movie is our reality put into a symbolic story,-- myth.

The reason for me posting this information is because I have been monitoring this sub-forum for some time,, and notice that people are focusing on the nature of the Matrix rather than the need to break free from it and helping others to break free.
I mean.. it is like a person in the film who realizes he is part of a un-real reality,, but goes about studying the computer programs and this or that aspect of the Matrix. Or The Matrix takes on this form,, and reality is thus,, and then there is this theory on reality over here-- studying those diversions.
You know your reality is not real -- it is imposed on you to make you a slave. What are you going to do about it?
You can also post your infomative ideas on the Myth of the movie THE MATRIX.. and if you disagree or agree.

Thanks for the thread your posts are quite thought provoking.
While I enjoyed the films in the series I personally don't believe that we are "slaves" of a Matrix type system any more than a dreamer is a slave to the dream.
I believe that through the filtering of reality that takes place within the brain via the overlapping learnt/encoded lenses we are what could better be described as suffering from "The Human Delusion". We mistake our filtered perception of the world as proof that we are individuals with independent thought and not a biological computer.
This being said however it must also be acknowledged that most people will also know with absolute truth that there is a part of them deep inside which is "them", a soul if you will.
"I think therefore I am." May not be correct, but "I am because I am." may well be.
Sorry if I seem to be repeating myself from previous threads but this is very much a work in progress and it helps to lay it out.

I am a big fan of the Matrix trilogy. I watched the first one without a prior clue about it's plot and it took me a few days to understand it properly afterwards!
My personal favourite is the second one with the car chase. I feel an often overlooked/misunderstood part of that film is when Neo reaches into Trinity and removes the bullet.

The Matrix-I was a truly inspirational movie (but not II and III) with a tinge of gnosticism. Whether it has mythical status or not - I would say yes for me, but not sure if it has become a generally accepted modern-day myth.

Great post dude. I've actually tried to point this out on several occasions, and yet, people would rather get locked into the "programmes" rather than removing them. Most wont listen when you tell them that this forum and the whole conspiracy thing is nothing more than a self perpetuating prophecy in action. Thats the reason they dont get shut down, they're creating what they want to avoid and tptb understand this. Why shoot an ally?
The whole thing(as mentioned by themime) is at a deep level nothing more than a mentation -a dream. Nothing exists "out there" unless we already have it within us -of course that means taking full responsability and most would prefer to play the blame game. Likewise, theres nothing out there that can be changed unless we accept that its within us fully and release it. Once we actually "get" this, we can clearly see theres nothing out there but us and what we have within us at a deep level. This is actually one of the only reasons I come here, I want to see what parts of me I'm suppressing or not looking at.

i have posted on matrix themes. check the maya-trix tharead.
the matrix is a fusion of vedic philosophy eg maya/illusion, enlightenment/red pill, and the christ figure eg krishna/kristos/christ eg neo. add to this gnostic theology eg the demiurge, the creator/architect. also the biblical influences eg zion.
the matrix is a cool film, although it has many levels to decipher, without knowledge of eastern/esoteric scripture, one cannot see the influences, metaphors, symbolism. just like art, literature, music has many levels of meaning, so do films.
also having the beautiful monica bellucci as persephone is quite good eye candy, lol.
films such Pi, stargate, mission to mars, terminator, the 13th floor, dark city, v for vendetta have clues aswell. books such as 1984 by george orwell, brave new world by aldous huxley. add to this esoteric and religous scripture, especially the bible:revelations and egyptain/mayan-2012/vedic texts.
the film by nicolas cage, the knowing is coming out soon. this is based on the bible code. also remember that the greatest minds of history eg issaac newton also studied the bible. i think newton studied the bok of daniel, in regards to revelations and the end times, eg today. francis bacon was also aware of the agenda, his artwork is testament to his knowledge
the agenda is real, as real as the economic collapse, they engineered via credit expansion and the asset bubbles. in fact one could argue that this economic collapse is one of the most tangible pieces of proof in regards to the agenda, a world government agenda.

http://www.thematrix101.com/matrix/symbolism.php
Matrix in the dictionary refers to "a situation or surrounding substance within which something else originates, develops, or is contained. The womb."
Additionally, the concept of the Matrix as an illusion or a 'construct' that humans are unaware of resembles the idea of Samsara in Buddhism and Hinduism/sikhism.
Samsara] teaches that the world we consider 'real' is actually a projection of our own desires. From Morpheus Neo learns that how he'd perceived himself in the Matrix was simply a "the mental projection of your digital self." The "real" sensory world "is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/samsara.html
Samsara literally means "wandering-on." Many people think of it as the Buddhist name for the place where we currently live — the place we leave when we go to nibbana. But in the early Buddhist texts, it's the answer, not to the question, "Where are we?" but to the question, "What are we doing?" Instead of a place, it's a process:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsara
Samsara is derived from "to flow together," to go or pass through states, to wander. Mostly a great revolving door between life and death and a new life reincarnated cycle of life. Also known as a game in ancient India
In Hinduism, it is avidya, or ignorance, of one's true self, that leads to ego-consciousness of the body and the phenomenal world]. This grounds one in kama (desire) and the perpetual chain of karma and reincarnation.
The state of illusion is known as Maya.
Hinduism has many terms for the ultimate place like moksha, mukti, nirvana, and mahasamadhi.
The Hindu Yoga traditions hold various beliefs. Moksha may be achieved by love of Ishwar/God (see bhakti movement), by psycho-physical meditation (Raja Yoga), by discrimination of what is real and unreal through intense contemplation (Jnana Yoga) and through Karma Yoga, the path of selfless action that subverts the ego and enforces understanding of the unity of all.
Advaita Vedanta, which heavily influenced Hindu Yoga, believes that Brahman, the ultimate Truth-Consciousness-Bliss, is the infinite, impersonal reality (as contrasted to the Buddhist concept of shunyata) and that through realization of it, all temporal states like deities, the cosmos and samsara itself are revealed to be nothing but manifestations of Brahman
In Sikhism, it is thought that due to the commendable past actions and deeds (known as karma or kirat) that people obtain the chance of human birth, which is regarded in Sikhism as the highest possible on Earth and therefore an opportunity that should not be wasted.
And only by continued good actions and the "Grace of the Almighty" can one obtain liberation from the continuous cycle of births and deaths of various bodily forms that the soul has been undergoing since the creation of the universe.
The end of the cycle of transmigration of the soul is known as mukti. For Sikhs, the state of mukti can be achieved whilst still alive, known as "Jivan Mukat", literally "liberated whilst alive".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_%28illusion%29
Maya, in Indian religions, has multiple meanings. Maya, is the principal deity who creates, perpetuates and governs the phantasmagoria, illusion and dream of duality in the phenomenal Universe.
For some mystics this manifestation is real, but it is a fleeting reality; it is a mistake, although a natural one, to believe that Maya represents a fundamental reality or Truth.
Each person, each physical object, from the perspective of eternity is like a brief, disturbed drop of water from an unbounded ocean.
The goal of enlightenment is to understand this — more precisely, to experience this: to see intuitively that the distinction between the self and the Universe is a false dichotomy.
The distinction between consciousness and physical matter, between mind and body (refer bodymind), is the result of an unenlightened perspective.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mukti
Moksha is seen as a final release from one's worldly conception of self, the loosening of the shackle of experiential duality and a realization of one's own fundamental nature which is true being, pure consciousness and bliss (satcitananda) an experience which is ineffable and beyond sensation.
According to the branch of Hinduism known as advaita vedanta, at liberation the individual soul or atman is realised to be one with the Ground of all being – the Source of all phenomenal existence known as Brahman. The self-as-individual is realised to have never existed.
** The science of the matrix
http://www.redicecreations.com/connections/more/holographicrealityspritsci.html
*** a repost of icke's views on maya/matrix:
In these altered states beyond the five senses we can regain our conscious connection to the Infinite and experience any expression of the Infinite anything in, all existence.
Look at the ocean. We give it different names like the Pacific or the Indian, as we give ourselves names like Bill Jones or David Icke. But these 'different' oceans are the same water, as we are the same consciousness. So where is the ocean? Is it crashing on the coast of India? Is it lapping on a beach in Jamaica? Is it the Roaring Forties or the South China Sea?
It is all of them and so it can experience all of them.
We are the infinite consciousness that is everything.
Where are we? Are we the tree in the garden? Are we the forest down the road? Are we the Sun or the sky? Are we the reflection we see in the mirror or the raindrops on our face? We are all of them because we are an expression of the seamless One and we can experience any aspect of the seamless One that we are.
We have been manipulated to believe we are isolated 'individual' droplets when we are the ocean. We are not even part of the ocean, we are the ocean. When you place a droplet back in the water, where does the droplet end and the ocean start? There is no division, the droplet becomes the ocean.
This knowledge has been communicated by the enlightened throughout human existence, but official science has denied its validity.
The ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, said that human beings were like people sitting in a cave always facing a wall. The universe was the shadows projected onto the wall, illusions that the people mistake for reality.
The only reality or truth was the light consciousness that made the shadows possible.
The ancient Vedic works of India make the same point. The eighth century Hindu mystic, Shankara, said: "This entire universe of which we speak and think is nothing but Brahman [infinite consciousness]. Brahman dwells beyond the range of Maya [illusion]. There is nothing else."
Seven months after this experience in Brazil, I came across an ancient Hindu myth.
It said human consciousness had begun as a ripple that decided to leave the ocean of consciousness the "timeless, space less and eternal".When it awakened to itself in this 'disconnected' state, the myth said, it forgot that it was part of the infinite ocean and felt isolated and separated.
so the maya-trix, hollywood, vedic texts, cutting edge science and icke all correlate !
