Dresden (etymologically from Old Sorbian Drežďany, meaning people of the riverside forest) is the capital city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe. The Dresden conurbation is part of the Saxon Triangle metropolitan area.

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. The controversial bombing of Dresden in World War II, plus 40 years in the Soviet bloc state of East Germany, changed the face of the city dramatically.

In 1941 Charles Portal of the British Air Staff advocated that entire cities and towns should be bombed. Portal claimed that this would quickly bring about the collapse of civilian morale in Germany. Air Marshall Arthur Harris agreed and when he became head of RAF Bomber Command in February 1942, he introduced a policy of area bombing (known in Germany as terror bombing) where entire cities and towns were targeted.

One tactic used by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force was the creation of firestorms. This was achieved by dropping incendiary bombs, filled with highly combustible chemicals such as magnesium, phosphorus or petroleum jelly (napalm), in clusters over a specific target. After the area caught fire, the air above the bombed area, become extremely hot and rose rapidly. Cold air then rushed in at ground level from the outside and people were sucked into the fire.

In 1945, Arthur Harris decided to create a firestorm in the medieval city of Dresden. He considered it a good target as it had not been attacked during the war and was virtually undefended by anti-aircraft guns. The population of the city was now far greater than the normal 650,000 due to the large numbers of refugees fleeing from the advancing Red Army.

On the 13th February 1945, 773 Avro Lancasters bombed Dresden. During the next two days the USAAF sent over 527 heavy bombers to follow up the RAF attack. Dresden was nearly totally destroyed. As a result of the firestorm it was afterwards impossible to count the number of victims. Recent research suggest that 35,000 were killed but some German sources have argued that it was over 100,000.

The large port city of Hamburg was very heavily bombed many times by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. During one of the attacks in July 1943 a firestorm was created that caused many thousands of casualties.

The Battle of Hamburg codenamed Operation Gomorrah was a series of air raids conducted by the RAF on the city of Hamburg beginning in the end of July 1943. It was at the time the heaviest assault in the history of aerial warfare and was later called the Hiroshima of Germany by British officials.

After seeing the pictures, it sickens me. I already seen disturbing corpses of dead people in rotten.com. I have a strong stomach and heart, but those bomb victims were all innocent people that have nothing do with the war. The women and children died and the city was devastated. I can see their skulls and skins still intact. Their faces looks like decomposed mummies and the resulting explosions from the bombs made their bodies and faces like that. *shudders*

Yep, British Government are still the bad guys we know today.

July 27 is the anniversary of the obliteration bombing of Hamburg, Germany by the Allied Air Forces during World War II. With the military code name "Operation Gomorrah," the campaign to destroy Hamburg was part of the strategy to lay waste German cities, including those with no military value, such as refugee-packed Dresden. Eventually eighty million incendiary bombs were dropped on Germany in the extended campaign.

I think the British people ought to build a memorial in London in honor of victims of the Dresden bombings of 1945.


Sixty years ago, on the evening of February 13, 1945, 234 British bombers set off for the German city of Dresden.

They were followed a few hours later by an additional 538 and the next day by a wave of 311 US bombers. Laden with high explosives and some 700,000 phosphorous incendiary bombs, the 14-hour long bombing operation laid waste to Dresden, killing tens of thousands of people and devastating one of Europe’s finest centres of culture and art.

The title of the first chapter "The Bomber Saves Civilisation" could hardly be more cynical. The "Tokyo Outrage" (Chapter VI) doesn't refer to the aerial bombing of Tokyo civilians, but to the execution of some of the captured airmen responsible. As the aaargh website intro says, it has to be read to be believed. Breathtaking.

The Battle of Stalingrad was a battle between Germany and its allies and the Soviet Union for the Soviet city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) that took place between August 21, 1942 and February 2, 1943, as part of World War II. It was the turning point of World War II in Europe and was arguably the bloodiest battle in human history, with combined casualties estimated above 1.5 million.

The battle was marked by brutality and disregard for military and civilian casualties on both sides. The battle is taken to include the German siege of Stalingrad, the battle inside the city, and the Soviet counter-offensive which eventually trapped and destroyed the German Sixth Army and other Axis forces around the city.

As a result of the battle, the Axis powers suffered roughly 850,000 casualties (far more than the combined death toll of the western Allies in the entire war) and lost a huge amount of supplies and equipment.

But its a false dichotomy because the decent innocent german people didn't do anything to us, it was the nazi regime.

There is no moral justification for bombing innocent civilians, no matter which side.
