What are the women's magazines like over there?

Here in Australia every woman in the public eye who has ever been diagnosed with anything from bone cancer to chronic diarrhea is automatically guaranteed several magazine covers with the headline "Whoever's brave fight with whatever".

There must be something important in brainwashing terms (especially when targeting female audiences) in using the word 'brave'.

Brave battle with cancer.
Brave family of missing (insert child's name here)
Brave firefighters.
Brave struggle against depression.
Brave little (insert burnt child's name here) miracle survival story.

Why is it that anyone who has anything happen to them and then has no choice but to deal with it deemed 'brave'.

my quick take on the 'brave' thing...Brave is something you are in the face of something adverse, an enemy, an opposition, an attack. So if you are 'brave' you are under attack. The underlying message is: It is not safe to be a woman.

Even our own bodies are dangerous ha ha ha

Keep women worrying, obsessing about their health and their bodies, keep them dependent and feeling vulnerable. Then they buy *stuff*.

Very good point SOL, it's a heroine myth. Since genesis story where Jehova kicks adam and eve out and condemns eve to a life of 'pain and subordination to man', this mythological archetype still has such a strong resonance with us.
