"From March this year all ISPs will by law have to keep information about every e-mail sent or received in the UK for a year. Currently many do this on a voluntary basis but this will now become mandatory. With little evidence to support their position, the government says this move is vital for monitoring crime and combating terrorist activity..."

I heard the headlines on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, although this story first emerged in January.

The government 'threat' of watching our emails can easily be got around with the right software and a little bit of knowledge. This government email scam is just another 'Terrorist' line, i.e. if you don't believe in the socialist/communist government of today then you are 'Terrorist' and thus will be treated like one.
I don't use email anymore, I use the far more secure method of on-line chat like Usergroups (USENET). This is the way to go to avoid the sociapathic/criminally insane powers that be.

This is outrageous!
Imagine if they started doing this with post, opening peoples letters, photocopying the pages, and storing it for at least a year. It's invasion of privacy to say the least!
It's getting bad now. You have Google storing all searches you make, you have Microsoft storing MSN conversations, you have your ISP storing all websites you visit and e-mails you send/receive - seriously what next!

What I'd post in an email isn't that different from what I'd post on a forum like this, so I don't feel paranoid about it (much as I think it's a pathetic development). But I imagine a lot of people (who are less aware) will become even more aware of being watched now.
Seems that the Beast is revealing itself more and more!

Well I consider many of my emails, much like my posts on this forum (& everyone elses) to be pretty incriminating in the hands of the jack-booted ones.
I wonder if the purpose of hanging on to them is to give them an opportunity to scan them & start stamping on individuals as being "terrorists", "extremists" & "mentaly ill"? If not, I can't imagine what they want them for. They don't need them to seek actual bona fide potential terrorists - they already know who they are, since they are the ones who employ & direct their avtivities to start with.
I view this law with enourmous distrust.

Do you know if sites that provide short term e-mail addresses such as Bugmenot (although I think they might have stopped now) would be as easy to trace as a private e-mail address?

I know it's against all privacy and such but, if you have nothing in you're emails to hide.
WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

If you read the other posts on this thread - and many other threads pointing out how tptb view those of us who contribute to such forums for example, wyou wouldn't need to ask this question.

I agree with Gilly on this but for purpose of time for you i will give u a quick insight.
I am a Christian, there are many on this site who are not christian but are opposed to a one world government dictatorship. As a Christian I have been aware of anti christian sentiment and anti christian legislation being passed not only in my own country but in other countries around the world along with the corporate media for the most part attacking my own particualr faith Catholicism.
I have grown in knowledge and understanding that not only is it Catholicism, not only is it Christianity that is under attack but at least the two main religions perhaps even more. Catholicism is in direct opposition to this socialist/communist one world dictatorship that is being created, putting me in the direct fireing line, but it is not only christians or muslims but anyone who is in opposition to this coup that joins us on that firing line.
Ultimatly its not what we have to hide that they want to see, for we are all here openly dicussing this, it is to censor what we openly proclaim through fear of arrest of torture and ultmatly death. They wish to log and record information in order to monitor us, pin point and identify us, to round us up and quite possibly kill us.
We have nothing to hide, but our opposition could lead to our death...thats the problem

It's occured to me that this measure has been put in place to start on the so-called Ides Of March. Maybe they picked that date so that anyone who raises concerns will be ridiculed i.e "beware the ides of march", blah blah

The problem is people like you. A total sheeple mentality reply.
It does not matter if there is nothing to hide, what the hell have our personal emails to do with faceless strangers.
Would you hand a personal letter to a stranger in the street and say have a read of this?
The point is your PERSONAL emails are nothing to do with anyone else but you and the receipients.

...and as it's been pointed out countless times, and on another thread i've just seen, the whole "counteracting terrorism" statement is just to take the focus from their false flag terrorist acts.
This is outrageous!

I am sure thay already do this with normal mail, ever had to wait ages for a letter, then get about 2 weeks worth at one time, with different posting dates on them etc

this is a bs story. There are trillions of email sent and received every week. Think any one is going to trawl through that? Didn't you know that the PTB are fucking stupid. I mean look at the world economy for a start? They are fucking incompetent. Go and work in these government departments - then see how smart they are.

..."hey-jude you have a message from the David Icke forum"
click click ...someone reading your post on the DI forum connects your post and views to your name & address supplied by your ISP.
...bye bye privacy
...actually I agree with raptorialis who basically said they just don't have the man power ...but the job of creating the fear is done!

There's been a computer doing this for years - it picks up certain buzz words and when these are detected, the whole conversation is vetted.
I'm kicking myself now because I can't remember the name of it, but I'll find out tonight, because a year or so back, my sister wrote to them, requesting a list of these words under the freedom of information act.
The list was utterly amazing - reams & reams of it. It included the sort of words you'd anticipate, plus lots of really bizarre, abstract stuff.
i'll get the info off her this evening & post it - not the words, obviously (although alot of them appear on our posts frequently), but the computer name & location etc, so that I can google it & post a link.

The problem is it's the bloody principle. I don't want a government of war criminals to have access to my private information.
Funny how the 'if you've got nothing to hide' argument was conveniently forgot when Jack Boots Straw refused to release the Cabinet minutes for the decision to go to war (which of course we know was an illegal war).
Aside from the invasion of privacy by a untrustworthy tyrannical government, this will cost a fortune that could be better spent in other areas. It will not collect very much useful information to counter crime or terrorism, as already exists easy encryption methods that people or groups who really don't want their messages read by the PTB will be using anyway.

Can we refuse and say its a matter of national security too? :p
GNU have given us the tools to fight back if we wanna use them: EMail-Security using GnuPG for Windows http://www.gpg4win.org/
Lets see how they deal with millions of encrypted email every day.
Alas most people won't do this so who is to blame.
